Slain deputy’s family torn as justice sought

Joy Deleston and her two daughters were gunned down on Feb. 28, 2008, and the person accused of those crimes is her teenage son. But some loved ones believe he didn’t do it.
    By Andria Simmons

    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

    Saturday, February 28, 2009

A year after the slayings of a Gwinnett County sheriff’s deputy and her two daughters, family members are torn between seeking justice for the victims and mercy for the alleged killer, the deputy’s teenage son.

Anthony Tyrone Terrell Jr., now 18, is accused of gunning down his mother and his two half-sisters at their Lawrenceville home on Feb. 28, 2008.

The motive remains unclear, but prosecutors said Deputy Joy Deleston had argued with her son earlier that day about having a girlfriend inside their house without supervision.

Terrell is expected to go on trial this spring if he doesn’t enter a guilty plea. If convicted on all three murder charges, Terrell could serve three back-to-back life sentences, unless a judge rules the sentences should run concurrently. In that case, Terrell would become eligible for parole in 30 years, when he is 48 years old.

Prosecutors are awaiting the results of a psychological evaluation before moving forward with plea negotiations or trial.

Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said some relatives of Deleston —- such as her brother Dwayne Deleston —- believe Terrell is not guilty.

Dwayne Deleston told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in April that “my theory about the incident is Anthony did not do it, but knows who did it and is afraid to rat them out.”

Dominique Ross, the father of Deleston’s slain 11-year-old daughter Micaiah, believes Terrell is guilty and he should never get out of prison. Terrell and his mother had fought several times prior to the shooting because Terrell swiped her personal revolver, Ross said.

“He had taken it on different occasions and was riding around with friends trying to be tough,” Ross said.

Ross says Deleston blew off his concerns when he tried to talk to her about restricting Anthony’s access to the gun. He said he also contacted Deleston’s supervisor at the Sheriff’s Department multiple times, but his complaints were dismissed.

“It was brushed under the rug, and then this incident happened, which could have been prevented,” said Ross.

A Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman disputed the accusation.

“A statement like that is something we would take very seriously and we would have followed up on,” said Stacey Bourbonnais. “The sheriff personally thinks this is a disservice to Deputy Deleston to have someone tell a story like this at this point. If his allegations were true, that information certainly would have come up in the homicide investigation. Nothing like that has ever come up in any investigation.”

Deleston’s mother, Mildred Joan Richardson of Charleston, S.C., did not return calls from a reporter Thursday or Friday.

Porter said he has spoken to Richardson, and she understands prosecutors will do what they need to do.

“She’s in a tough spot because it’s her daughter that was killed, but it’s her grandson that’s charged with the killing,” Porter said. “I think she’s just trying to put her family back together.”

Richardson has visited her grandson in the DeKalb County jail, according to defense attorney Lyle Porter, who is not related to Danny Porter. The whole family has been very supportive of Terrell, he said.

“They all maintain interest in the progress of his defense and they are helping him any way they can,” said Lyle Porter.

The rapper Juvenile, whose real name is Terius Gray, fathered Deleston’s 4-year-old daughter, Jelani, He declined through his attorney to discuss the killings on Thursday, saying “it remains a private matter.”

A memorial service was held Friday for Deleston in front of the Gwinnett County Detention Center. Sheriff Butch Conway said Terrell should not be given leniency.

“I want him prosecuted to the fullest extent,” Conway said. “He took three lives and he needs to be punished for that.”

Anthony Tyrone Terrell Jr., a 17-year-old high school sophomore, has been arrested and charged with allegedly killing his mother, Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Deputy Joy Deleston (age 39), and his two younger sisters, Micaiah (age 11) and Jelani (age 4). Young Jelani just so happens to be the daughter of former Cash Money recording artist Juvenile. Gwinnett teen gets 2 life sentences for shooting mother, two sisters

    https://www.ajc.com/news/local/gwinn...7PjKaJt6XjSgJ/

It was the kind of argument that could crop up any time between a mother and a teenage son.

Anthony Tyrone Terrell, then 17, broke the rules by inviting a girl over to his Lawrenceville house without supervision on Feb. 28, 2008. But instead of resulting in a shouting match or slamming door, it ended with the slaying of his mother, Joy Deleston, who was a Gwinnett County sheriff's deputy, and her two young daughters.

Terrell pleaded guilty to murder charges Friday and was sentenced to back-to-back life terms. He apologized and said he wished he could trade his life for the lives of the departed. But he was hard-pressed to explain how an argument so trivial could prompt a reaction so brutal.

"I never planned what happened that day," Terrell said, his voice even as he read a prepared statement before Superior Court Judge Debra Turner. "My mom and I got into a disagreement and things just spiraled out of control."

Prosecutors said after the pair argued Terrell retrieved his mother's service handgun and shot her twice.

Terrell's half-sister Micaiah was an 11-year-old whom relatives described as happiest when she was reading a book. She saw her mom get shot and started screaming. Terrell turned and fired several times, killing her. Then he went upstairs to find 4-year-old Jelani, a talkative, inquisitive child who Terrell affectionately called his "homie," relatives said. He kissed her and then shot her twice in the chest.

Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said Terrell told investigators he killed her because he didn't want her to grow up without a mother.

Terrell said he considered committing suicide next.

"That night my plan was to take my own life, but in the end I was unable to shoot myself," Terrell said.

The court heard testimony from Dominic Ross, the father of Micaiah, and from Mildred Richardson, Deleston's mother. Both said they forgave Terrell and that they loved him.

The rapper Juvenile, whose real name is Terius Gray, fathered Jelani. He did not attend the hearing. Juvenile did not respond to attempts to contact him by mail at three different addresses or through his management company, Porter said.

Richardson said she learned her daughter had been shot when a law enforcement officer came to her home near Charleston, S.C.

"I thought maybe a robbery had gone on, and Joy being the person she is, that she stepped in to help somebody," Richardson said. "I thought ‘Oh boy, what has she gotten herself into?'"

It wasn't until she arrived in Georgia that she learned her granddaughters were also dead, and that her grandson was the culprit.

Richardson begged the judge to give Terrell one life sentence, instead of two, because he would be eligible for parole sooner.

"In my heart, I know he didn't mean to do this," she said.

Richardson became overwrought after the hearing, prompting a deputy to bring in a medical kit and close the courtroom for about 15 minutes while relatives tended to her.

Defense attorney Lyle Porter, who is not related to the district attorney, acknowledged the frustration of many in the community who struggled to understand why the murders occurred. He said he believes Terrell's emotions went out of control in an instant and his actions after shooting his mother stemmed from a feeling of hopelessness.

"It's a tragedy all the way around and I think it's beyond comprehension," he said. "I don't think anybody will leave this courtroom with any better understanding."

Sheriff Butch Conway issued a statement saying justice had been served, "even though it can never bring back Joy and her two beautiful little girls."

"I believe two life sentences will give him plenty of time to think about what he did to his family and to the grieving family members and friends who were left to deal with his actions," Conway said.

OMG, the comments on that first article......

I don't think I've ever seen a group of comments that overwhelmingly referred to the victim as a "stanky ho." I do think most of them are from the same three people though, posting under different names. My favorite was "Carla" who "works in Mental Health" and repeatedly referred to the victim and her son as "social paths."

I don't know if the comments about Joy are true, but she certainly made an impression, that's for sure.

My biggest question though: This happened in 2009 and he was arrested immediately. Why was he sentenced in 2018 - nine years later?! Speedy trial and all that stuff...

Rest in peace Joy, Macaiah, and Jelani...

Good question! He was actually sentenced in 2018... but it seems to have really dragged on.

For those who didn't read the comments... OMG, I just went through and read them all. Every. Single. One. A very fascinating story lies beneath the surface of this seemingly standard family triple murder. There are numerous sock puppets in the early comments section, but they are easy to pick out. It's the later comments that begin to tell a much bigger story worthy of a Lifetime movie.

Out of 395 comments, there was one that was favorable to Joy. It was from a self-described filmmaker who met her once when she held a gate open for him when his hands were full of equipment. There was occasional admonishment from those who felt it was "wrong to speak ill of the dead." Other than that, there was a universal feeling that Joy was an avowed racist with serious anger issues and the tenacity of a pitbull who delighted in destroying people's lives. She was a law enforcement officer with a penchant for married men and used her badge to wreak havoc in the lives of people who she decided had crossed her in some way. She openly practiced Black Voodoo death curses against her enemies. Every commenter who knew Joy personally had negative things to say about her. No one described her as "nice." Most (including the men she dated) admitted they were afraid of her. The words "crazy" and "psycho" were bandied about.

The comments section of this blog post became a cathartic place for Joy's victims to come together and tell their stories. They posted for four years (surprising in itself) and several said they thought they were the only ones, they didn't know she had done this stuff to others. If the comments are to be believed, they were left by school/college mates, fellow law enforcement officers, ex-"boyfriends," aunts, cousins, neighbors, teachers, prison officials, fellow escorts (where she was alleged to be blackmailing the johns).... the list is endless. The tales went back to school days. All of them told the same stories of meeting a kind, intelligent woman who pulled a Jekyll/Hyde act w/heavy stalker tendencies when disagreements arose. She is accused of intentionally getting pregnant for the child support. The alleged family members claim she severely abused the son who murdered her and constantly told him she wished she hadn't had him. She was allegedly bringing johns (sometimes more than one at a time) into the house and he could hear them in the bedroom, remember there were two little girls living there too. His schoolmates said he hated his mother. I can't believe he pleaded guilty. There is speculation in the comments that he was pressured into it because a trial would have been embarrassing to the Sheriff's Office (she was a Deputy) and her family. There are claims her family has always thought they were better than the other black families in Valdosta. Don't we have a member from that area? I'd love to hear their take on this. Anyway, it paints a pretty fascinating picture of a severely disturbed woman, her impact on the lives of those around her, and her ultimate (some say deserved) end. I've never seen a triple murder victim so universally despised. This comment from Sondra summed it up:

Sondra: I am not here to degrade a dead woman and yet I have the urge to defend those who have spilled their feelings. I first of all knew Joy very, very well. None of you would say these things if they had no merit and I read the comments of this total ignorant whatever he is Jackson that makes me chuckle in a big way. I am not calling her names but I can see how you feel those who feel the way you do. Initially when Joy and I met I thought she was nice. Joy was every bit if not more than what all of you have been candid enough to share. When I saw a crazy Joy I left her alone for a reason. Joy was dangerously consumed with jealously towards this one girl I won't say by name but Joy was so consumed with wanting to as she put it wipe her ass out of this world that I was afraid of how she would turn on me some time. My mother met Joy one time and called me that night to tell me to leave her alone and do it quickly. I decided to because I saw a real evil person. I think she was a ticking time bomb. She had two sides and if she didn't like you, watch out. She told me she worked majic and I giggled it off until she did this ritual to prove to me she knew her stuff. She was a dangerous woman with a badge and she even confided to me that her job made her feel above people and she had the power. Well as this lady said Joy was crazy, it was not funny to me to watch a 35 year old woman rub herbs in her hand with this girls picture and chant like a demon was inside her. She wished actual death on that person and all I can say now is it looks like her wish backfired. I left Joy alone and she was nobody's friend. I only knew about one married man and I even asked her why and her response was that they were freakier because they never got freaked at home. This woman was a pure demon and I have no reservation in saying this. A demon.
I'm no psychiatrist but I play one in real life and I definitely think Joy was a "social path"

I hope people from highschool/my early 20's don't come forward after my death and share stories of when I was evil

I don't know how I feel about this case. The mom may have been an abusive "social path" lol (I think the fact that the family is supporting the son speaks volumes), but why kill his little sisters?

Yeah, that really sucks. I think he might be a "social path" too - look who raised him. I can't imagine living like that for 17 years. People in the jail said he has shown no remorse and is angry and aggressive. He said he killed his sisters because he didn't want them to grow up without a mother (with a monster like that for a mother they would have been better off quite frankly, she was using those kids). I know that's a lame and twisted excuse, but I think he was all caught up in the hopelessness of the situation. The older of the two girls saw him shoot his mother and freaked out, so he shot her. The article says he kissed the little one before he shot her. I think the son is probably right where he belongs. What I found fascinating was the ripple effect of how many lives a single woman on a mission could impact so negatively.

I thought they lived in Gwinnett County?! That's about 4 hours from Lowndes County. Lawrenceville is north Georgia. Valdosta is south Georgia. I live 2 hours from Valdosta. I used to go to Valdosta occasionally to keep my husband company during work and I did some promotional events at the high school where that kid was found in a gym mat.

I don't know, the comments mention Valdosta again and again so I thought Lawrenceville was a neighboring town. I got the impression that she and the murderers father both worked at the Valdosta State Prison. Wherever they're from, I'd like to hear a local's take on this.

I am still trying to get over the fact that she had a baby with Juvenile. Or, that Juvenile had a relationship with a cop.

I guess the mom used to work in Valdosta before she moved. I don't know much about Valdosta except that they have a big amusement park.

I have no way of knowing for sure but she may have passed herself off as a "video vixen" (side-eye translation = ho). They probably get a few rappers.

    Who's Melissa and Andre?

I think this is a picture of the victims and killer.

She's actually really pretty. I don't trust really pretty people. They get away with so much.

She is another baby mama and her son is the half brother of the killer son. According to the drama-filled comments that I was reading, she is putting money on account for the killer and her son is visiting him in prison.

She [allegedly] had Melissa arrested on false charges and held in jail for six months before she was released. This chick was the Queen of False Charges, and she played dirty. Her objective was to destroy lives. People lost their homes, their jobs, their children. She's a real evil POS.

I'm sure Juvenile didn't know. Apparently she hid the fact she was a cop when she was turning tricks for the escort service. There are a few comments from someone who alludes to being Juvenile's wife celebrating the fact he doesn't have to pay child support anymore, but I doubt it's really her. I hope he did a paternity test, with her history, those kids could have been fathered by anyone.

I hear ya, I live with this curse every day of my life. The struggle is real, but I get away with a lot.

I was surprised at the number of people who knew her personally who described her as [physically] ugly. She clearly isn't butt-ugly like they described, but I think if you knew her in person it was probably hard to see past the evil.
