I looked at his mom's page and she said that they made the decision to donate his tissue, helping up to 40 people. Such a hard decision for a family to make at a difficult time no less. RIP Colby.

Organ/tissue donation is awesome, but I also feel like it should be a given. I totally side-eye people/families who don't do it.

This is my biggest fear in life. Not me, so much, because I won't be alive to care (so feel free to help yourself to my organs and tissue), but someone I love. Fucking terrifying. RIP Colby.

I don't know ND, I think it's a great thing as well but at the same time it's a very hard decision to make when somoene you love is dying. I know my mom would have been very okay with anything she had to be donated but of course, her organs were bad. But say they were okay, it would have been such a hard decision for my sister and I to make under those circumstances.

I do appreciate that we are allowed to put on our ID's whether or not we want to be organ donors but dang, still hard for a family to deal with. I applaud the families that have the courage to make those decisions.

RIP Colby. Too young to die.

I don't think there's any valid reason to not do it if you can, but obviously that's just my opinion.

I think some people have a problem with it bc they want the body to look nice for viewing. Also, some think doctors will not try hard enough to save them if they know the patient is a donor. Sounds crazy, but I've heard it said before.

That's so sad. My mother-in-law passed away at a young age and they classified her death as natural causes. She just went to sleep one night and didn't wake up. I feel so badly for his mother. She's going to have such a hard time getting over this.

How awful to die so young, but I am so glad they decided to donate. In my opinion, not donating (if the tissues are viable, of course) is a huge waste. I've made it clear to my husband I want everything possible donated. If not, donate me to science/medical schools. And if that's not possible, donate me to the body farm! Burial or cremation is a last resort; only if no one else wants me!

It has to be a very hard decision to make for those left behind.

For me personally, it would be the idea of my loved one having their parts taken from them. Of course I know they are deceased but given how I have dealt with some of my family and friends that have passed, the gried was to overwhelming to even have the mind set to even offer to donate.

Im an organ donor and my husband knows that. My only request is that they leave my eyeballs alone. I know, i know, im dead but still, that skeeves me out.

Organ donation is of course a very awesome thing, I totally agree. I just know that a lot of times, it's too much to even think about this ind of stuff. I think that it's very possible that in a hospital setting, a patient that has been declared legally dead is hard for anyone to actually realize the finality of their life. They are technically dead but their bodies are still moving as if they were alive. I bet that plays a part in why some people choose not to donate.
If something happened to one of my kids, it would be the hardest decision to make, but at the same time i might be able to realize that something good is coming from this passing and that my child helped another person live maybe just a bit longer.

A few years ago I read a book, "Stiff" by Mary Roach. It goes in to what happens to bodies when you die, from what they do if you have an autopsy to what they do once you reach the funeral home to prepare you for burial/cremation. Very interesting book. I think if more people knew what happened to their organs once they died, they'd be far more willing to donate so that part of themselves might live on. That's my hope anyway. I have worked in critical care pediatrics for 17 years and have seen parents make the decision to donate organs. It is as touching as it is heartbreaking, and definitely a decision I never, ever want to have to make. My thoughts and prayers go out to Colby's family. To lose someone unexpectedly like that, on a day that should hold so much celebration...has to be incredibly difficult. Rest in peace, young man.
Don't like what I have to say? I respect that. Go fuck yourself.

I agree with this. We don't have viewings generally here so there's certainly no reason to worry about keeping the body looking nice for that. It must be a really hard decision to make though. When I was nursing and working in the Intensive Care Unit I used to have to sit in on meetings with families to discuss organ donation and it was always pretty horrific.

Nah, it's usually for selfish or religious reasons.

Imagine the donation thing is something we humans are all wrong about and there are a bunch of people in the afterlife without livers, kidneys, and lungs.

Or worse, they are reincarnated but born missing important shit. Ha.

I don't think it's selfish tho. I like that it's a decision that we can all make. If it were required, that would scare me.

    That's your opinion.

Making it required would be awesome (in my opinion).

I guess I don't think it's selfish as much as a total waste.

Okay. I'll try to come up with a reason why it's not ridiculous to not donate organs...I'll be back. We may have to reschedule.
