It is 33 years since what was the obvious killing of 21-year old Eddie Murray in a northern NSW police lockup and still there is a long way to go to even the flicker of justice. Last week, several of Eddie?s sisters and a couple of staunch supporters finally met with the NSW Attorney-General, Brad Hazzard to discuss the death of Eddie and their call for the reopening of a full blown investigation.
The human rights award winning president of the Indigenous Social Justice Association, Ray Jackson and death in custody researcher Rod Allshorn accompanied Eddie?s sisters ? Anna, Karen, Eileen, Helen, Marion and Lorraine ? to NSW Parliament for the meeting with Mr Hazzard.
?My brother was killed in that police cell,? said Anna Murray, the last family member to see Eddie alive.
Mr Jackson said he reiterated to Mr Hazzard that it was not true that Eddie Murray took his own life.
?He was found dead allegedly by his own hand according to police one hour after detainment in the police cell. However the coroner made an alternate finding,? said Mr Jackson.
?The coroner found that Eddie was far too intoxicated to have hung himself and instead of concluding outright that a police officer had a hand in his death beat around the bush with the finding that Eddie died ?at the hand or hands of persons unknown.??
Mr Jackson said this finding is a cheap copout and ?should not be allowed to stand.?
?It is obvious the only people with access to Eddie while he was in a police cell were the police.?
Nearly two decades later, an examination of the exhumed body of Eddie found multiple injuries, including a broken sternum.
Ms Anna Murray read out a heart wrenching statement to Mr Hazzard about the loss of her brother and the impact that it has had on the family ever since.
Their father Arthur and their mother Leila went to their graves having the justice they chased denied them. Eddie Murray was killed in the Wee Waa police cell, a small community town near Brewarinna ? a region with a long and tortuous history of racism and racial divides. The grief of the family?s loss, compounded by a long struggle for justice, has never left. It should never have been this way.
Mr Jackson said, ?We are hoping that somewhere along the line that we are going to get some justice for the family of Eddie Murray. The coroner found that Eddie died in a police cell to persons unknown. The only people who could have been responsible were the police.?
The Murrays had 12 children, nine daughters and three sons. Nine of the children remain, and continue torn with grief and distraught by the obscene silence of the NSW Police and the Police Integrity Commission and thus far gutless governments.
?The truth is that we as a family need the truth, we cannot rest nor can our mother and father rest in peace till we have the truth of what happened to our brother made public,? said Ms Anna Murray.
Simon Luckhurst, a researcher wrote a book on Eddie Murray?s death.
?In less than 50 minutes after he was apprehended by police, he was dead in that police cell.?
?The police officers say he hanged himself.?
?But no one else saw this, the ambulance officer who attended the cell, who I spoke to said that he did not see this.?
International journalist and filmmaker John Pilger, over a 25 year period, sustained coverage of the tragedy that befell the family of Arthur and Leila. You would imagine that with books written, films made, with parliamentarians such as Senator Lee Rhiannon and NSW parliamentarian David Shoebridge calling for inquiries that governments would act.
Mr Jackson said that the family presented Mr Hazzard with an encyclopaedic catalogue of information on their brother?s death and ?the corruption around it all?.
?They put in a strong case, a very strong request that the Attorney-General once he considers the information, the facts, the evidence that he proceed to reopen the case.?
?The Attorney-General commented on the potential obstacles, the period that had elapsed since Eddie?s death, 33 years, and that potential witnesses and police officers had since died. But he said that he would read what was presented to him and respond.?
If Mr Hazzard is concerned about time lapsed, then he should act now and reopen the case and call for a full-blown inquiry before it is forever too late.

Hahahaha TFD, so awesome. Maybe she turned around the little girl just to shoot the video? Maybe. Let's pretend.
Ron - not everyone who supports cops is racist.
speaking of ninjas, as i was going to class last week some white kid was on the phone and very loudly said, 'nigger, i'm waiting for class to start!' not nigga, not ninja... just nigger.
that kid is going to get his ass kicked one of these days for improper use of slang.
I've got 3 kids & was car seat safety obsessed & I didn't get it.
What age is everyone here considering safe? Down here they only use back-facing seats for infants or very small for their age toddlers. Depending on the brand of seat, some become unsafe if you don't convert to forward-facing after a certain height & weight. The little bit of googling I just did makes it look like you guys are similar to us. Most said roughly 9 mths - 2 years or 20- 40 lbs? I'm confused???
It's recommended to rear face until at least 2, if not longer. There's been a lot of research and kids were getting broken necks from minor car accidents.

CDC: Hospital data shows racial disparity in injuries caused by police
DAMIAN ORTELLADO, SUNLIGHT FOUNDATION
LAST UPDATED: Friday, September 5, 2014, 10:52 AM
Disturbing video evidence surfaced in July that shows a California Highway Patrol officer aggressively and repeatedly striking the sides of 51-year-old Marlene Pinnock’s head. The officer reported that Pinnock, a homeless African American woman who had to be hospitalized after the incident, became “physically combative” after attempting to walk into rush-hour traffic, despite a civil-rights lawsuit against the officer that claims otherwise.
While the incident involving Pinnock is alarming, it is not unique. Every year, tens of thousands of people are injured by law enforcement in events that rarely stir the same viral outrage. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regularly collect data about these incidents, which are classified as nonfatal injuries by law enforcement, from hospital emergency department records.
The data reveal not only a racial disparity in the number of nonfatal injuries caused by law enforcement, but also an upward trend in their frequency over the last decade. And in the wake of Michael Brown's killing by a police officer in Ferguson, Mo. last month, a national conversation has begun in force about police brutality disproportionately affecting non-whites throughout the country. This data can contribute directly to that conversation and help people who are seeking solutions to the problem.
Using the available data, a comparison of estimates obtained from the CDC’s Web-Based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System (WISQARS) to national census population counts shows that black people suffered over five times as many nonfatal injuries per capita from law enforcement as white people did cumulatively over the years 2001-2012.
And while the rates of nonfatal injuries to women when compared to men are generally significantly lower, the racial trends hold even within this subset. Using the same injury estimate to population count methodology yields nearly identical comparisons between black women and white women, where black women receive five times the rate of nonfatal injuries caused by law enforcement when compared to white women.
It is important to note that approximately 17 percent of the injury data collected by the CDC has no race or ethnicity assigned to the victims. However, even in the case that all unassigned victims of legal intervention injuries were white, the rate of nonfatal injuries to black people by law enforcement would still be over three times higher than that of white people.
The Police-Public Contact Survey, a population survey released by the Bureau of Justice statistics and conducted in 2008, reveals racial discrepancies in people’s experience with law enforcement consistent with CDC data. The survey shows that the percentage of black people who reported experiencing the use or threat of force during their most recent contact with police was nearly three times that of white people.
Even if the assault on Pinnock was an isolated incident, the data point to what could be considered a constant struggle for racial equality in interactions with law enforcement — a struggle that, based on trends, does not appear to be getting any easier for minorities in the last decade. While conclusions drawn from the available information should be scrutinized, access to it may shine light on issues that, without any documentation, would prove difficult to analyze at all.

Not sure what the deal is with the title because that's not what the article says. Maybe it's an attempt to placate our right wing gov't on the assumption they don't bother reading past the headline when it's about shit like this ie Stolen Generation 2.0

A police video of the removal of children from a NSW Aboriginal community shows no evidence weapons were drawn, despite claims a family was held at gunpoint.
The footage appeared to contradict many of the claims of a family that said officers held them at gunpoint and handcuffed them as the children were taken into the care of community services.
Heavily armed police arrived at the family's homes near Moree at dawn on January 15 and took the eight children into state care.
The children's mother, father, aunt and grandmother all said they woke up to police in their homes, with guns pointed at them.
The mother said she was handcuffed naked and the father said he was detained at gunpoint as police went from room to room looking for the children with their guns drawn.
Police have confirmed the parents were handcuffed and the footage shows an aunt in another house was also handcuffed as police gathered the children.
However, the footage does not show police drawing weapons or making threats.
The footage, which police would not provide for broadcast, does not show what was happening inside the three homes in the early stages of the raids.

Eight children were seen to be removed by four Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) workers.
"At no time were any firearms drawn during this operation, nor were there any long arms or rifles carried in this operation," assistant police commissioner Geoff McKechnie said.
"We often encounter anger and aggression from some residents when we execute search warrants so we have to be prepared for the worst possible scenario."
Police could be seen using a sledgehammer to enter the three homes, which they said was to ensure safe entry for FACS staff.
The ABC could not confirm if police denied community residents the right to leave while the operation was underway, as has been claimed.
Police said no-one was prevented from leaving the reserve where the family lives, but several people in the reserve claimed a neighbour travelling to work was stopped at a roadblock and told to return home until the operation was over.
A FACS spokesman said there had been significant concerns for the children's safety and wellbeing.
The children have since been returned to their family.
Police said they acted professionally at all times and were helping FACS in the execution of a warrant issued by the Local Court.
Family and Community Services Minister Gabrielle Upton declined the ABC's request for an interview
Some Moree & Walgett history while I'm in here. Most people in Australia don't know about this so I doubt it' s too well-known outside Aus
Black or white, whipping your 4 year old with a fucking stick until he's bleeding is abuse. No if's and's or but's about it.
Agreed. I don't get this "it's how I grew up, I don't know any different" shit - & it is shit.
Quickly off the top of my head, I was thrown into the laundry & hit over the head with with stilleto heels (asked if mum knew where my socks were before school in 1st grade), rolling pins, scrubbing brushes, hair brushes (bristles to the nose - they were nice), the sharp serrated metal strip on the box of a roll of foil, I've been punched in the face with the base of a flyspray can (2 black eyes & my braces pierced my face in 2 places - couldn't eat or talk for 3 weeks because it repierced every time I tried). I've had a hot iron thrown at me, forks, an entire 4 place dinner set & my little brothers steel pedal car (that time I dared to duck, lucky for her, because she might've hospitalised me otherwise, usually I had to cop it with out flinching or it would escalate). & of course there were the standard slaps & lots of pinches.
There is no fucking way I'm going to subject my kids to even 0.01% of what I copped. It's bullshit that you grow up "just fine" & you have to be an arsehole to put anyone else through it when you know what it feels like.
omg blighted!!! That's horrific.
