Cynthia Hoffman (19) murdered by best friend Denali Brehmer (18) after online interest "offered" $9M to do so

I suck at titles and rarely start threads, so fix if needed (wasn't sure how to word it).

Denali Brehmer began planning how to kill her "best friend" after a man she met online said he would pay her several million dollars for evidence of the killing, Alaska authorities say.

The 18-year-old from Anchorage, Alaska, had developed an online relationship with Darin Schilmiller, 21, of Indiana, who posed as a millionaire named "Tyler," and offered her at least $9 million to kill Cynthia Hoffman and send him "videos and photographs of the murder," according to the Alaska Department of Law.

The two began discussing "a plan to rape and murder someone in Alaska," several weeks before Hoffman's murder, according to court documents.

Hoffman, 19, and Brehmer are described in the documents as "best friends."

Hoffman was bound with duct tape, shot in the back of the head and pushed into a river near a hiking trail outside Anchorage on June 2, the department said in a statement.

Anchorage police officers discovered her body along the Eklutna River bank on June 4.

Brehmer recruited Kayden McIntosh, 16, Caleb Leyland, 19, and two juveniles to help her carry out the killing, and in exchange, "All of them would receive a significant sum of money for their part in the planning and/or execution of the murder," according to the department's statement.

CNN has reached out to Brehmer's attorney, Emily Cooper, but a request for comment has not been answered.

    Victim had a learning disability
Hoffman was brought to Thunderbird Falls by Brehmer and McIntosh in a truck borrowed from Leyland under the ruse they were going on a hike near the Eklutna River, the statement said.

They stopped at a clearing and Hoffman's hands and feet were bound with duct tape and duct tape was wrapped around her head and mouth, according to court documents.

McIntosh shot Hoffman one time in the back of the head with Brehmer's gun, court documents said, and she was then put in the Eklutna River.

Phone records show Brehmer was sending videos and photographs to Schilmiller "at his directive" throughout.

Hoffman's father, Timothy Hoffman, told CNN affiliate KTVA that his daughter had a learning disability.

Hoffman said in court his daughter was an "angel" and a "daddy's girl."

'Tyler' had also directed girl to sexually assault a child
A grand jury indicted all six defendants Friday for first-degree murder, first-degree conspiracy to commit murder and two counts of second-degree murder and other charges. McIntosh is being charged as an adult.

Brehmer, McIntosh and Leyland are in the custody of the Department of Corrections and will be arraigned Tuesday, according to the Alaska Department of Law.

The juvenile defendants are also currently in custody, the Department of Law said.

Schilmiller will be arraigned once extradited to Alaska, the Department of Law said. He is currently in federal custody for child pornography charges.

Federal court documents allege Schilmiller had also directed Brehmer to sexually assault an "8 or 9 year old" and a 15-year-old and send videos to him. Brehmer told investigators she did, and video of the 15-year-old was recovered by investigators.

It is unclear who is Schilmiller's attorney or if federal charges have been brought against Brehmer.

Seriously. Did she really think she was going to get 9 million dollars from someone?? Come on...and then managed to find accomplices who also believed it. Crazy.

I was wondering about the one who catfished her. He is being held in Alaska on murder charges, so we should be hearing about him later.

An Indiana man accused of being the mastermind behind an elaborate plot to kill an Anchorage teenager during 2019 pleaded guilty on Friday to a charge of solicitation to commit murder.

Darin Schilmiller, now 25, had posed as a millionaire and started an online relationship with then 18-year-old Denali Brehmer and directed her to kill 19-year-old Cynthia Hoffman, according to an indictment and bail memorandum filed in the case.

Brehmer pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in February and is scheduled to be sentenced this month.

Schilmiller had promised to pay Brehmer $9 million or more to carry out a killing, the bail memorandum said. She recruited then 16-year-old Kayden McIntosh, 19-year-old Caleb Leyland and two other teens to plan Hoffman?s death, according to the memorandum. Authorities did not publicly identify two of the teens because they were charged in the juvenile justice system.

Hoffman had a developmental disability and described Brehmer as her best friend, her family said at the time.

On June 2, 2019, the teens lured Hoffman to Thunderbird Falls in Chugiak and bound her with duct tape before shooting her in the back of the head and dumping her body into the Eklutna River, the memorandum said. Schilmiller had requested photos and videos of the killing, which Brehmer sent to him on Snapchat, according to the memorandum.

While investigating the killing, police found child pornography on Brehmer?s phone, according to an affidavit written by an FBI agent. She told investigators during an interview that Schilmiller had directed her to sexually assault two minors and send explicit videos to him, the affidavit said.

Brehmer and Schilmiller were indicted on federal child pornography charges. They have both pleaded guilty in those cases and are awaiting sentencing.

Schilmiller pleaded guilty to the charge of solicitation to commit murder on Friday. Charges of first- and second-degree murder were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Anchorage Superior Court Judge Andrew Peterson will determine Schilmiller?s sentence at a hearing in January. He could be sentenced to between five and 99 years on the charge. Assistant District Attorney Patrick McKay said he could not comment on what sentence the state plans to recommend in Schilmiller?s or Brehmer?s case. The attorney representing Schilmiller could not immediately be reached for comment on Friday.

Leyland and McIntosh are still awaiting trial on charges including first- and second-degree murder.

Denali Dakota Skye Brehmer, one of two young people charged in the 2019 killing of Alaska teenager Cynthia Hoffman in a murder-for-hire scheme, was sentenced to 99 years in prison on Monday.

Court documents showed that Brehmer, then 18, struck up an online relationship with 21-year-old Darin Schilmiller, who was living in Indiana. Schilmiller claimed to be a millionaire and said he would send Brehmer $9 million in exchange for photos and videos of a killing. He did not name a target.

Brehmer allegedly offered four other friends a cut of the money if they helped her, CBS News previously reported, and Brehmer and then-16-year-old Kayden McIntosh allegedly lured Hoffman on a hike. During the hike, Hoffman was shot in the back of the head and put into a river. Police found Hoffman's body one day after she was reported missing. McIntosh's trial in the case is pending.
In January, Schilmiller was sentenced to 99 years in prison by Peterson for his role in the murder after being extradited to Alaska.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s and we used to think the future would be like the Jetsons. I don't think I realized what would happen to the already stupid. I can see being catfished into sending a boob pic or $100 to some random person I thought was a kid my age who really liked me but it takes a special kind of insanity to be catfished into murder. And that kind of insanity is not an excuse to get out of jail because you're dumber than toast.

Father of woman murdered at Thunderbird Falls dies during memorial motorcycle ride

Timothy Hoffman, whose 19-year-old daughter was murdered in an elaborate catfishing plot five years ago, died Sunday in a motorcycle crash during a memorial ride marking the anniversary of her death.

Hoffman’s wife, Barbara “Jeanie” Hoffman, was riding on the back of his bike and was seriously injured, their family said.

Sunday marked five years since their daughter, Cynthia Hoffman, was killed. The case garnered national attention.

Timothy Hoffman, 58, lost control of his motorcycle around 1:30 p.m. near Mile 49 of the Parks Highway, Alaska State Troopers said. He left the shoulder of the road and rolled into the center median, they said.
