(KUTV) ? A man suffered a fatal fall Saturday night while climbing near Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon, leaving a hiking 9-year-old hiking companion behind.

The Utah County Sheriff's Office has identified the man as Carl Adrian Vanderklis, 40, who was on an outing with his fiance's son.

The man and the child were climbing together, according to information released by the sheriff's office. When she contacted emergency crews the boy's mother reported that she could see her son crying, but she could not see Vanderklis and had not seen him for several hours.

The boy was not injured and made his way off the mountain on his own.

At approximately 7 p.m. Saturday, deputies and and search and rescue volunteers and a Department of Public Safety helicopter responded to the area to locate the missing man. The rescue team found Vanderklis on a nearly vertical slope about a third of a mile west of Bridal Veil Falls.

SAR volunteers made their way to Vanderklis and determined he did not survive the injuries he sustained in a fall. He was discovered at an elevation of approximately 5,800 feet.

Because of falling darkness, it was determined recovery of the body would be "extremely dangerous." Volunteers were shuttled off the rescue location and then returned at 7 a.m. Sunday. The body was secured and hoisted off the cliff by the helicopter and then taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy.

Officials said it is unclear why Vanderklis fell but said it was possible he stumbled or that he slipped on loose material. He was said to have been killed immediately by the fall.

Super confusing. It looks like he posted a picture of her and their daughter at the bottom of this same hike. She's only 9 months old so they didn't go on the hike with them. Maybe she was able to keep an eye on them with binoculars?

So, I just checked out their profiles. First of all, he was breeding pitbulls. Second of all, there are pictures of one of the pitbulls with an old broken rope around his neck and they didn't think this was strange.

White trash through and through and this makes me feel less bad for the situation. Except for the kids. I feel badly for them because obviously they're growing up in an unstable situation. They seemed to be moving and didn't have anywhere for the surviving pitbull and her babies to go and they were basically passing the puppies out like they're candy or something.

Confusing or not, meh.
