A young Swedish man advertised his own suicide on an online forum then hanged himself in a live web broadcast, The Local reported Tuesday.
Marcus Jannes, 21, downed painkillers Monday morning before writing about his upcoming bid to kill himself on a social networking site.
Several hours later Jannes hanged himself in front of a webcam. Shocking images of his death appeared live on a file sharing site at two second intervals, investigators said.
Cops probing the tragedy in Jarna, southwest of Stockholm, said they were tipped off about the suicide but not until it was too late. They arrived to find Jannes dead in his apartment.
The troubled Swede had revealed his intentions in a post at 11:51 a.m. local time, supplying a link and password so would-be voyeurs could watch via a file-sharing site.
At 1.02pm local time he posted a description of himself: "Have Asperger syndrome / high-functioning autism. Am overly vulnerable (emotionally) ... Have really poor social skills, which make me a somewhat lonely person."
At 1:13 p.m., Jennes appeared on camera with a Nike "Just Do It" t-shirt -- and wrote: "alright lets do it." Police were eventually alerted at 1:44 p.m.
"Police performed CPR until the ambulance arrived, but his life could not be saved," police spokeswoman Lotta Thyni told the Expressen newspaper. "We can only regret that people who knew that he planned to kill himself did not act to save his life."
Police have launched an investigation into the death, which echoes the 2008 "cyber suicide" of U.S. college student Abraham Biggs, who took an overdose of drugs then lay dying in front of a webcam while it beamed live for 12 hours. Further web suicides have been reported in Japan and Britain, The Local said.
