I think she accidentally killed her kid during routine stupidity that lots of parents don't realize qualifies as abuse. And what's fucked up about her is she has an on/off switch. Kid was dead? INCONVENIENCE.
I mean, the other thing is that a sociopath learns to mimic the behavior of normal people to fit in. So odds are she put on a pretty good pretense of being a loving mom because that's what people expect. Also, people are bad judges.
