I guess i have to state for the record that I in no way want Dave to kill himself.

I guess i just like to treat people like humans, and not retards that need to be coddled like kids. I believe in people that battle depression. Dave has overcome.

But Dave, I really hope you do not attempt to kill yourself again. Hanging will weaken the neck muscles, you may have trouble sleeping at night. Overdosing isn't fun either. You will really cause damage to your insides and will develop acid reflux. Slitting wrists are annoying because those scabs are hard to heal, and guns jamming will cause you to develop arthritis in your trigger finger. :kiss3:

    So live. Everyone live.

    Re: Ever tried suicide?

I've tried a few times, all in my "teen" years.
My first attempt was a overdose of the anti-depressant I was on at fourteen. My first love had broken up with me-typical reaction for a young female teenager diagnosed with major depression I guess.
Although these days I can never understand what a fourteen year old could possibly be so depressed about?!

But I'm doing very well now that I've gotten past those years--enjoying college, enjoying life in general.

    I'm happy for you.

I tried once, long time ago. Back when my bi-polar wasn't being treated. It's under control now, and I love my life.

I half assed tried almost a month ago. After drinking. Drinking & suicidal thoughts don't mix well.

It scared me. I never want to be in that position again. I am determined not to be. I think I am feeling better.

Starting to lose weight isn't hurting. :-)

I am not sure if my question makes any sense to you guys but I really need to ask it - you have quite often mentioned Bi polar disorder - how do you know that you have it ? How do you go on about it ?

I was diagnosed after a mental breakdown that put me in a psychiatric hospital. I'd been treated for severe unilateral chronic depression prior to that. Basically a hallmark of bipolar is extreme mood swings--classic symptoms are you're up for days, you feel great, you make bad decisions regarding money and sex (as examples), you're irritated and erratic (can't focus on one thing, have several projects going) and then you crash into a depression. My ups weren't as marked as my downs, but the cycles were there. Also, an inability to control your emotions. I call them adult tempter tantrums. You know you're being irrational, but you just can't stop the way your mood is going. I guess you just don't ever feel normal, which you don't even know what normal is until you receive treatment.

Extreme bipolar (type 1 versus my more mild bipolar type 2) can include auditory and visual hallucinations and religious mania.

My psychiatrist told me the best way to know if you're bipolar is whether or not you respond well to Lithium. There isn't a test or even an accurate checklist. Until the 1970's bipolar and schizophrenia were considered the same illness.

If you're concerned, a good start is to get a mood chart http://www.healthyplace.com/bipolar-disorder/diagnosis/bipolar-mood-chart/menu-id-67/ and start tracking your moods. My swings are seasonal with mania hitting pretty bad in late winter and late summer.

my uncle (i guess ex uncle now? my aunt divorced him.) has bipolar type 1. and it didnt really *present*, i guess you could say, until he was in his early 20s. i guess there had been mild signs his whole life, but nothing major until he hit a certain age. he used alcohol to self-medicate, which make the downward spiral even worse. he was so much fun before things got bad. he was a great father to my cousins, a good friend to my parents, an awesome uncle. he was spontaneous, caring, just so cool. i remember he used to pick us up, toss us in the air, catch us (so safe, lol)...he was the fun uncle. then the mental illness really destroyed him. my grandparents paid for him to be in a psychiatric hospital, but as soon as he left, he stopped taking his meds. he's been medicated on and off for the past 25 years, but he's never been stable. its so sad. he fought lung cancer, then continued to smoke. i dont think he can help himself. ugh. i'm done. tl;dr.

Yeah, bipolar doesn't usually present until mid to late 20's unless you're a child of a bipolar. I was 24 when I started to lose control and 28 when I was diagnosed.

In me, it started making it's presence when I was 10 or 11. I was diagnosed at 14. My doctor said it was rare in kids.

It is super rare in kids unless you're the child of a bipolar and then the likelihood is much greater, especially in male children of female bipolars. Neither of my parents were admitted bipolars, but both were being treated for chronic depression. My brother had classic bipolar symptoms, starting as a teen.

As far as I know I'm the only one in my family that has it. Although I do have an uncle that's a paranoid schizophrenic.

    Re: Ever tried suicide?

I call it my 'subconscious suicide', a couple of years ago life kind of caught up with me all at once, like a ghost I found myself standing in the middle of a main city road waiting for a bus or something to flatten me, some may say it's selfish that I didn't think about the poor driver of the oncoming vehicle at the time, but to be honest, I was so disassociated and disconnected my head really wasn't aware of what space I was in at the time.

To cut a long story short, I was committed to a psyche unit, which was a blessing in disguise, I got the best psychiatric/medical and psychological treatment available, something I could never have afforded previously, I was also given E.C.T which has scewed with my short term memory, but hell, I'm 100% grateful to have made it through the psychosis and shit, and now I've never felt better, (must be the happy pills!!! Lol), it's weird, but you sure don't sweat the small shit after having been through something like that.

On reflection, I'm hesitant to think of those who commit suicide as being 'selfish', for if they were in the state of mind that I was in, I was well beyond being aware of what the hell I was doing to myself, let alone anyone else.

I just wish that other people who are in the position I was in would reach out for help, but that's easier said than done, when you even lack the motivation to take another breath, and it's not always obvious to others that things have gone beyond being controllable, until it's too late.

    Re: Ever tried suicide?

I was diagnosed with anxiety problems when I was around 12, my depression kind of grew from there. Being stressed out and having panic attacks for some un-seen reason in my eyes made me very depressed and I became very withdrawn from family, friends.. life in general. I tried to commit suicide twice going into my freshman year of high school after my older sister who was 18 at the time took her own life. I constantly blamed myself for not being there since I was so withdrawn. I'm on medications for anxiety & my depression now. I feel a lot better than I used too and actually look forward to a future and having a family some day. It took me a long time to stop blaming myself for things I had no control over. Just try to take it one day at a time, that's all you can do!

glad to hear you're a survivor amizlude and are able to look forward to the future again, thankfully I'm in the same head-space.
Yep, panic attacks can be really disabillitating, to the point where you become too afraid to even walk out the door, and the frustrating thing is, the more they frighten you, the more they occur. I suffered them for years too, they seemed to wash over me like a tidal wave from nowhere and I could never pin point the actual trigger, one day a doctor reassured me that I wouldn't die of a panic attack, that the worst thing that could happen would be I'd pass out and my heartbeat would regulate itself again, for some reason the panic attacks subsided after that, so I think that a fear of death was an underlying symptom for them, weird that I should now find much humour, comfort, and intrigue in a death forum now!

    Re: Ever tried suicide?

Panic attacks are the WORST. I rarely have them anymore thank goodness. I would literally black out sometimes and I know it would be so uncomfortable for people around me cause they didn't understand my anxiety, or why certain things would cause me so much problems.. I didn't understand it half the time, either. lol Definitely a hard thing to try and explain to someone who hasn't been through that type of thing. :2huh: I'm glad your better now, too!
