You know I thought the same shit. I use to think either people were just making it up to start convos or they had no life or something. A few nights ago I had my first dream about a MDS member. Not going to say who or what about but it shocked me that I did.

I could watch Bush get shoes thrown at him all night. It's quite nice.

The only thing that's funnier is the episode of The Daily Show when Jon Stewart is interviewing some congressman, (for the life of me I can't remember who it was, and I even posted it on here and now can't find it anywhere!!! woo-rant)
the congressman is singing the praises of Cheney, and then grudgingly admits at Jon's urging that he did make one mistake. It was some economic mistake or some such bullshit and Jon looks incredulous and goes-
He shot a dude in the face.

    Funniest evar.

The worst is when really good things happen to totally awesome, deserving kids. Like when santa comes and grants a kid with cancer a free trip to Disneyworld. Someone should be there to break the truth to her. "Kid, not only is this santa a fake cos he doesn't exist, but you're going to die as soon as you get back from Florida, and there's no heaven."

Yes, because everyone knows that believing, as opposed to pretending, fictitious characters are real is the only way to have magic in wonder in one's childhood.

You just reminded me. The other night I had a dream that I bought lottery tickets. Nomad was sitting next to me in homeroom and I told him he should buy some because the jackpot was high. He was like 'nah, I don't gamble, blahidity blah" so i kept bugging him and finally he bought one. And he won. And he didn't give me SHIT. I was so pissed.
Well, I don't gamble so your dream was somewhat accurate. How weird.

You are really a grinch. Who peed all over your fantasies as a child?
Haha. I'm not a grinch. I just think differently. I give year round, I love year round, I spend time with my family year round. I have never believed in Santa Clause and I never needed this season to have a reason to do any of the things it promotes. Since I was a young child, my parents tried time and time again to get me to participate in the season. I never wanted to. Eventually it got to the point they would threaten me with being grounded just to get me to unwrap my presents.

Nobody pissed on my fantasies as child. I was beat, sexually abused, emotionally battered, and worst of all, ignored. My fantasies are the one thing I never lost and were certainly never twisted. I'm the most creative, imaginative person of all the people I know personally, save one. I may sometimes be down in the dumps, but I'm not stuck in a rut. My world isn't just shades of gray, and I don't need rose colored glasses on in order to see rosey colors.

If there's anything wrong with me along this line of thinking, it's that I believe in things too much and am constantly let down because few others share my vision.

I will never tell my child that (insert deity name here) isn't real, because I can't prove that or even back it up with a sound, reasonable theory. I will be honest about Santa, though, because his current incarnation is just another fairy tale. I will never tell my child they can't pretend Santa is real, and I'll even encourage imaginative gameplay. Giving them the truth of Santa doesn't rob them of their ability to experience and interact with the world in their own imaginative ways. There is a world infinitely full of unknowns to be appreciated and grown into (why is the sky blue, what are clouds made of, why do I feel this way when she walks into a room, will I cry when my baby girl walks down the aisle, how long did it take that mountain to grow, and my god, what is that awful smell?). If I can't fill my children a profound wonder for these seemingly obtuse or mundane things, and the best I can give them is a lie about a rabbit that shits eggs to give them enough magic to hopefully waylay their supposed cynical years, I have failed my kids.

I don't believe in perpetuating a holiday that just becomes more and more commercial, and more and more meaningless each year. I believe in celebration, I believe in life, I believe in putting the earnesty and the zest back into the moment, and the appeal will be the celebration itself, not the hope that some fat man is leaving phat loot under the tree! If any fat man is giving out presents, it's me, and it will be any time I damn well please from Jan 1 to Dec 31. So if I'm to teach my kids the value of Christmas, I'd be teaching them something that they are hopefully doing year round, instead. And if I teach my kids the OTHER value of Christmas (birth of christ), then that's religious, and we will celebrate it for those reasons if they want to, and I'll only promote it on an educational level.

I guess I should wrap this up here, since I'm pretty sure you only read the first paragraph and the last line.

At any rate, a grinch I am not. Though a Scrooge is arguable, but only if a McDuck.

Lucifer, don't worry. Your kids will eventually find out Santa isn't real, and you can still instill all those values and things you described. (if you turn out to be a good parent of course)

The fact that Lucifer has so much anger towards imagination says something kinda sad about his childhood.

I just don't see why you can't allow your kids to have the imagination/fairy tale aspect and instill all of the things he described. You have more than 11 months out of the year to do this and of course you don't have to put the entire emphasis on Santa and him delivering presents. You can teach them real life values(generally and specifically related to Christmas) lessons and at the same time allow them to believe in something that isn't real. The values and lessons will still be there after they find out it was all make believe if you really desire to instill these types of things in your children.

You insist on making this something it's not. Belief is not imagination. My argument was that I didn't want my kids believing in Santa. You did. We were never discussing the imagining of things. Believing in something means you think it is real. Imagining means you know it's not real, but participate in the illusion for your own ends.

That I am angry towards imagination is not a fact, because it is not true.

If you're going to keep switching gears and twisting words, this debate just isn't going to work.

Further, if you are only going to submit psychological traps as opposed to valid counterpoints to topic, this debate isn't going to work.

Actually, that's the one thing I can't do. There are no life values related to just to Christmas, and it's obvious that I strongly prefer not to teach, as fact, ideas that don't exist. It was a fake holiday created on top of another holiday, that originally started some place other than Christianity. This sounds too much like I'm making a "stand", so I'll digress and move along to my point.

Christmas doesn't teach us anything special about life that we don't already have the capacity to learn during those other 11 months, so why make it a customary celebration solely in an effort to impart these lessons? If I'm not putting the emphasis on Santa and all that it entails, or on religion and all that it entails, what's left? Absolutely nothing. It becomes just another day of driving home those lessons I hope will last a lifetime.

I'd rather my kids make up their own seasonal spirit to celebrate at any time they want to, than buy into an empty holiday that has become more about holiday sale rushes than giving two shits about your fellow man.

The general worry seems to be that if I tell my kids Santa isn't real, they will somehow be robbed of all their joy and pixie dust. I contend that it will not. The two girls who were my daughters are evidence to me this will not happen; the handful of other children in my life are evidence to me this will not happen. If the kids in my life are any representation of kids around the world, then the common consensus would be "Santa? Who cares. Let's go play pirates or pretend we're firemen."

Instead, Santa has largely been relegated as an instrument of punishment. You better behave or Santa's not going to bring you any presents.

If Christmas and Santa are insignificant enough concepts that it shouldn't be a problem to include them in yearly festivities, then you must agree that they are also insignificant enough to NOT include in yearly festivities. However, Christmas seems to be a big deal to you, since we are having this in depth of a conversation about it, and it is glaringly obvious that Christmas is a big deal to me. And yet, for believing like I do, I'm told I had a sad childhood (a truth which is besides the point and irrelevant to it), that I'm making some kind of stand which is ultimately a joke and will make my kids hate me (ironic that I have more faith in what I believe in year-round than most Baptists do on a Sunday morning or Wednesday night, a statement I can't actually qualify but appears about right), and that I'm somehow against anyone pretending anything ever (although this is a blatantly misguided perception, if anyone has ever bothered to read any of my other posts NOT concerning this topic). If these things are true about me (and they are not), then it is also true (since turnabout is fair play, and misguided perceptions win the day, no?) that the lot of Christmas worshippers are nothing but unimaginative, brainwashed drones that have their heads so far up commercialism's ass it's impossible to see where it ends and they begin (which I mostly doubt is the case; I do believe there are plenty of Christmas loving folk out there who are able to proactively celebrate it).

What is so important about Christmas that it has to be the most acknowledged holiday ever? What if I wanted my kids to celebrate Hanukkah? There's no Santa in that. Would we still be having this same conversation? Would I still be a hater of imagination, or would that be mitigated due to the overt presence of religion, praise of G-d, and the fact that present purchases are still keeping the economy moving? Because surely we must respect religion, right, but I'm guessing anyone with an opinion not motivated by a god is instead just damaged goods. What is worse about giving my kids the alternative of imagining everything they please instead of tying them to observing an empty ritual or limiting their choices by forcing upon them a belief in some deity? And if we are to move from belief to imagination, what is the fairy tale Santa gives that no other fairy tale can?
