Child Had Called Police For Help
NEWARK -- The parents of two young children were found slain in their home Friday after one of the children phoned someone who alerted police, authorities said.
Mayor Cory Booker said the couple was involved in the "narcotics trade" and that the killings were not random.
"It seems to have been well-premeditated," Booker said, as he stood near the home.
Police Director Garry McCarthy said the couple, in their 20s or 30s, did not appear to have been shot. He said there was "virtually no blood" at the scene, but gave no cause of death.
The girl and boy, aged 6 and 3, were in a second-story window when police arrived after being called at 12:12 p.m. about two unconscious people, McCarthy said.
Police forced their way into the home and found the bodies, McCarthy said. He declined to say where in the home they were.
The children were taken to counselors, Booker said.
Before the mayor and police director spoke, a woman screamed, "No, no," as she spoke to police near the home. Her identity was not immediately known.
A neighbor, Tiffany Ashford, said the family had lived in the home less than a year.
"Every time I saw them they were doing an activity with their kids," said Ashford, 18.
Another neighbor, Daniel Wilkins, works for a construction company and helped build the three-story home, which he said was finished several months ago. It sits in a residential area of the city near Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
"The neighborhood is saturated with drugs," Wilkins said. "It's not a violent community, but things happen."
Booker, however, said drug trafficking has been a scourge in the state's largest city.
"We believe that is driving the violence in our city," Booker said.
