I understand that the family was traumatized, but it is hard for me to believe that although she was swollen, they couldn't tell a difference in her hands or her feet? I just believe that if it was one of my children I would be able to identify their hands or feet at least.
I don't know....I guess it is hard to imagine if you have never been there.

The girl was also taller. If I remember correctly, the family said they weren't really paying attention to her height as she was laying in the hospital.

Wow that's interesting. I don't think I could identify my kids by their hands or feet. Is that something you look at a lot? I'm feeling like a bad mother now.
She was like 4 inches taller, i think. I guess the more I think about it, the more it seems really weird that they didn't notice way sooner. Her eyes were a different shade of blue too. And Whitney looks like she has beauty marks. She had her belly button pierced and Laura did not.

And I have more tattoos than the ones that my parents know about. You can't really count that one.

I guess the family didn't have any reason to suspect that it wasn't their daughter. Plus they said that the doctors had warned them that she wouldn't look like herself before they even saw her. They thought that differences were due to the accident

I pay attention to hands and feet for some reason. I can identify alot of people by their hands and feet. Especially my family.

Re: Mistaken Identity Stuns Family

I remember when this happened. My sisters live in Gaylord, and it was just the talk in every office/business in Michigan at the time.
Its so sad to think of it happening. I could understand if they were related, ya know? Sisters, cousins, but I just don't see how t hey wouldn't be able to tell them apart. :| I know people used to think me and my friend were sisters though, so, meh.. sometimes when you spend a lot of time with someone you pick up their traits.
Sad story in any case. RIP Laura.

I could totally ID my own feet. But they're so jacked up. I can't wear regular shoes. I feel bad cuz there's no way I could pick out anything on my daughter besides her face. :-(

Re: Mistaken Identity Stuns Family

This was big news in Indiana last year.

Anyways, I knew 2 girls from my high school that passed away in an auto accident in 2001. When the one girls parents went to go identify her at the hospital, the nurse originally took them to see her friend's body and not her. I don't know if they had their tags switched or if they even had them tagged to begin with, but this also took place is rural Indiana. Score.

Re: Mistaken Identity Stuns Family

I know that my 17 year olds feet are a size 12 and his big toes are square. His feet look like a larger version of my MIL's. My 16 year old's is a size 10 and he has perfectly shaped and rounded toes. His feet look exactly like my husbands. Neither look like mine. It is kinda weird that I can picture each of these individuals feet in my mind.
My 17 year olds hands look like mine but a larger, masculine version. My 16 years old hands look exactly like his dads (he looks like his dad all around).
I am thinking I AM WEIRD!!
I can even picture my secretary's hands in my mind. Never seen her feet.
Maybe I have a mental illness. :-o

You know what your MIL's feet look like? That's hysterical. It's ok though. I don't think you're weird. Not at all. Really.

Re: Mistaken Identity Stuns Family

Whitney is the one that ended up living.

Both girls were originally from my area, so there was a massive amount of coverage here when it first happened.

Very sad story. I would never have imagined something like that was possible, considering all the forensic technology that is available.

But I believe I heard that Indiana passed a law stating that DNA tests now must be performed in any multiple-victim accident.
Hopefully that will keep things like this from happening in the future.

Funny they made it this long with out needing to implement that into standard procedure.
Well, it's still a fairly rare occurrence to have two people look really similar in an accident without them being related. I'm sure if they were related (if it were a car accident with just one single family and there were siblings that looked similar) they would have done the testing. They just didn't think it was warranted here. Although, the whole logic of 'well this purse was near her so it must be her' is pretty shitty.

Re: Mistaken Identity Stuns Family

I saw a preview for this on tv a week or so ago, and thought it was very odd. I just kept wondering how the "family" of the living girl was convinced that she was their daughter. I only saw one picture of each, I think they were h.s. pics or something, and didn't think they looked anything alike. I'm not in the family's place though, so I have no idea what was going on. Weird and interesting story though.

On a side note, totally unrelated (forgive me), what is with everyone having everyone else's pictures? I get confused easily.

I wonder if it is the age old money factor.

Maybe people complain about the cost for the test or something?
"Why the hell do I have to pay for this, I could have told you it was my damn daughter!" etc or something idk.
