Matthew Leveson (20) was murdered by his boyfriend and his body was dumped in bushland

    http://mydeathspace.com/article/2008...ed_in_bushland

A distraught Sydney family has made a heartfelt plea for any information about the disappearance of their "happy-go-lucky" son, who may have been the victim of a gay hate crime.

Matthew Leveson, 20, was last seen in Cronulla on September 23, and was reported missing two days later after he failed to turn up at work at a Hurstville call centre and could not be contacted.

His car, a Toyota Seca, was found on September 27 by police at Waratah Oval, Sutherland, a short distance from his home.

Police have offered a $1000 reward in connection with Mr Leveson's disappearance.

"It's baffling ... it's a complete mystery," his father Mark Leveson said.

"He's a happy-go-lucky guy who liked going out to party and had a good circle of friends."

His mother, Faye Leveson, was distraught as she appealed for information from the public.

"I want my son back," she said.

"He's a beautiful boy, he wouldn't harm a fly, he's got lovely friends.

"I just want to know something. Please come to the police."

Mr Leveson's friends have also appealed for assistance through the social networking sites Facebook and MySpace.

Miranda police have not found any evidence to suggest Mr Leveson is still alive and have not ruled out the possibility his disappearance may be linked to a gay hate crime.

He was with a large group of friends at a popular gay nightspot on the day he was last seen.

Detective Inspector Adam Barwick said the investigation was being treated as homicide.

"We certainly hold grave concerns for Matthew," he said.

"We believe his disappearance is a result of foul play."

The circumstances of Mr Leveson's disappearance were highly unusual, he said.

"We don't believe he chose to go missing,'' he said.

"It's possible people are talking amongst themselves as to what happened or what they believed has happened and that's why we would like them to come forward to police.

"We have been following some lines of inquiry but it has now been almost six weeks since Matthew was last seen.

"He was known to have a large circle of friends and I believe someone in the local community knows what has occurred."

Mr Levenson's family last saw him at a 21st party in Wollongong on September 7, but his brother Peter saw him two weeks later at a popular gay nightspot.

He was with a large group of friends before leaving the ARQ nightclub in Surry Hills in the early hours of Sunday, September 23.

Police said Mr Leveson's partner last saw him later that day in Cronulla.

Mr Leveson is described as being 170 to 180 centimetres tall, white or European in appearance with a thin build and short blonde hair.

He was last seen wearing light brown cargo shorts, a black singlet and white leather shoes.

Any information can be given to Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 or Miranda police station on 9541 3899.

A reward of up to $1000 is payable for information which leads to an arrest.

Re: Matthew Leveson (20) was allegedly murdered and his body has never been found

It's believed that Matthew has been murdered:

    From http://stgeorge.yourguide.com.au/det...src=topstories:
DETECTIVES now believe missing Matthew Leveson of Cronulla was probably murdered.Police have turned the search for Mr Leveson, 20, into a homicide investigation, after his disappearance on September 23 and the discovery of his abandoned car at Sutherland days later.Mr Leveson's green 1999 Toyota Corolla Seca hatchback was found parked outside the public toilets at Waratah Park Reserve in Rawson Avenue, Sutherland.Miranda local area command crime manager Adam Barwick said the car was driven to the reserve between September 23 and 24.Inspector Barwick said evidence suggested that Mr Leveson did not park the car there himself."We believe he met with foul play," Inspector Barwick said.Police have now issued an appeal for public assistance. They are asking anyone who saw Mr Leveson on September 23 or saw the car being dropped off at the reserve."If you picked up anyone from the park that day or gave someone a lift from the area, please contact police," Inspector Barwick said.Mr Leveson was reported missing on September 25 when he did not show up to work at Hurstville.Family and friends have not given up hope that Mr Leveson is still alive. They distributed an email in southern Sydney yesterday, asking people to help search for the young man."Our dear friend Matthew Leveson is missing," the email said. "It is still not too late. Please help us."Mr Leveson was last seen wearing light brown cargo pants, a black singlet and white leather shoes.Anyone with information is urged to contact Miranda police on 9541 3899 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Re: Matthew Leveson (20) was allegedly murdered and his body has never been found

Did anyone in Oz watch that documentary last night on Crime Investigation Australia about the Bondi Gay Murders?

This case is hauntingly similiar to the circumstances surrounding those numerous disappearances and murders. The missing/murdered men would all go to a location that would be known as a local "meeting place" and would be jumped by gangs who were intent on carrying out gay hate crimes as a "blood sport". The victims were all viciously beaten and then their mangled bodies were thrown off the top of the Bondi Cliffs, to imitate a suicide. I wonder if this could be another one that could be linked?

This is the summary on that episode from the CI website:

In the late 1980s and early 1990’s a series of violent murders took place near Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach. Three innocent men were attacked and thrown to their deaths from a cliff top. The murders were part of a much wider wave of violent hate crimes as gangs of youths roamed Sydney’s inner suburbs randomly bashing and killing gay men for sport.

Among the victims at Bondi was Wollongong television newsreader, Ross Warren, a gay man who disappeared while visiting friends in Sydney in 1989. Ross Warren’s case was dismissed by police as a “probable accident”. But his mother conducted a long campaign to have her son’s disappearance finalised.

Then, some ten years after he was first reported missing, Ross’s police file finally came to the desk of one courageous investigator who started to dig a little deeper.

Detective Sergeant Stephen Page quickly realised that there was more to the Ross Warren case than was uncovered in the original investigation. The file contained a great many unanswered questions.

As he read the file Detective Page began to uncover similarities with other murders and slowly the shocking pattern of violence and death began to emerge.

Another murder victim was Bondi resident John Russell, a gay man who had inherited some money and was about to leave for the country to start a new life when his body was found at the foot of the Bondi cliffs.

ON NIGHTS when there is a full moon and only light cloud cover Mark Leveson will make the drive to the Royal National Park and look for his murdered son's body.

Having looked over the records, he believes those are the conditions the killer worked under when burying the body of 20-year-old Matthew somewhere in the extensive bushland in southern Sydney in September 2007.

Mr Leveson hopes seeing exactly what the killer saw that night might give a clue as to Matthew's resting place.

''There is nothing definite to say his body is even there,'' Mr Leveson said. ''But we've got to start somewhere.''

This is part of the commitment Mr Leveson has shown in the past 4½ years to finding his son and bringing his killer to justice.

It is further evidenced in the tattoos he also now bares.

On his right forearms are the words: ''Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal''. Inked on his left is: ''Love leaves a memory that no one can steal''.

One upper arm carries the smiling face of Matthew. On the other is Charles Bronson as the gun-toting vigilante from the 1974 film Death Wish. ''Fiat justitia'' - ''let justice be done'' - is written beneath Bronson's face. Today, joined by Sutherland police, the Leveson family make another public appeal for anyone who can help find Matthew's body. A $100,000 reward will be offered for information that leads to his discovery.

Matthew was captured on security cameras leaving ARQ nightclub in Darlinghurst with Michael Peter Atkins, in early on Sunday September 23, 2007.

He disappeared that day and the last known contact he had was a text message sent to a friend at 3.30am. The message was: ''He needs to f---en get over himself,'' in reference to Mr Atkins.

In August 2008, Mr Atkins, who was 24 years older than Matthew, was arrested and charged with his murder. He pleaded not guilty and it took a jury almost a week to acquit him of murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter.

Mr Leveson's friends told police he was unhappy in his relationship with Mr Atkins and was being pressured to bring to their apartment young men for group sex.

Mr Leveson's car was found days after his disappearance. Inside was a receipt from Bunnings Warehouse for a large garden mattock and heavy-duty cloth tape bought nine hours after he was last seen alive.

Fake online murder confession raises and dashes hopes of Leveson family

Seven years after their son Matthew's unsolved murder, the Leveson family from Sydney thought a social media confession might finally bring them closure.

After years of searching for the 20-year-old believed to be buried in the Royal National Park south of Sydney, the Levesons were hopeful they might be able to "bring Matty home".

The family waited for months as police followed up on the online confessions made by someone claiming to have worked as a ranger at the national park where he said he buried Matthew's body.

"It was hard for the boys, they thought we are finally going to get the murderer, the person who killed their brother," Mrs Leveson told The Sydney Morning Herald.

"We were excited, we thought finally, we are going to get this ratbag, he has slipped up and then ? bang."

The concocted confession came in a series of posts but none of it was true.

Police investigated the claims for six months before they learned from the man the entire story was a fake.

"It rocked us," said Detective Inspector Gary Jubelin.

"It was the biggest kick in the guts when we found out where the information had originated from. I've never seen a strike force so devastated."

Matthew was last seen in the early hours of Sunday 23, 2007 when he left ARQ nightclub with his partner, Michael Peter Atkins.

His final text message said "He needs to f---en get over himself," referring to Mr Atkins, sent around 3.30am on the day he disappeared.

Atkins was charged but later acquitted by a jury and his charge was downgraded to manslaughter.

Even with the latest setback the family has vowed to keep searching for Matthew so they can have proper funeral and farewell him.

And their efforts are buoyed by homicide commander Mick Willing who has reopened the case under Strike Force Bowditch.

An inquest into Matthew Leveson's death is gazetted for December 8.

Matthew Leveson murder case: The version the jury was not told

He told detectives he was sound asleep at home but they suggested CCTV footage detailing the purchase of a mattock and gaffer tape showed otherwise.

Eight years ago, 20-year-old Matthew Leveson disappeared after being last seen leaving the ARQ nightclub in Darlinghurst with his older boyfriend Michael Peter Atkins.

In 2009, Mr Atkins was acquitted of his dead partner's murder and manslaughter by a jury after pleading not guilty.Parts of Mr Atkins' 2007 interview with police, in which he was asked about buying a mattock and tape in the hours following his boyfriend's disappearance, were withheld from the jury but have now been revealed.

A transcript of the interview, seen by Fairfax Media, details how police told Mr Atkins they had CCTV footage of a man ? fitting Mr Atkins' description ? seen at Bunnings Warehouse at Taren Point on Sunday, September 23, 2007.

A receipt from that store for the purchase of a mattock and gaffer tape, made nine hours after Matt was last seen alive, were later found in the boot of Matt's abandoned car. "It is our belief that about 12.20 on Sunday afternoon that you went to Bunnings Warehouse and you were the person who purchased that pick and the gaffer tape," a detective asked Mr Atkins during an interview in 2007.

"Is there anything you wish to say about that?"

Mr Atkins, now 52, replied: "I don't think it was me".

Asked who he thought the person, who wore clothes similar to what Mr Atkins told police he was in that same day, could have been, Mr Atkins replied: "I don't know".

He later told police that on Sunday, including when the Bunnings purchase was made, he was in bed with Matt.

They woke later that afternoon about 2pm or 3pm, Mr Atkins confirmed.

"Yeah ... we sort of just had, you know, lazy Sunday afternoon really," he told detectives.

The footage from Bunnings Warehouse was showed to the jury in Mr Atkins' trial before the panel found him not guilty.

The Bunnings receipt was found in the back of Matt's car, which was abandoned at a known gay beat in Sutherland after his disappearance.

The speaker in the boot had been ripped out and it was later found in Matt's garage at his Cronulla home, Mr Atkins trial had heard.

Mr Atkins' trial in 2009 also heard he sent messages to his younger lover's phone the day after he disappeared, asking where he was.

However, it was alleged by the crown that Mr Atkins had the phone the whole time. Police found Matt's phone in Mr Atkins' car during a search of his home.

Mr Atkins' lawyer reiterated in a statement that Mr Atkins had been tried and acquitted of murder and manslaughter in the NSW Supreme Court.

"Mr Atkins has been subpoenaed to attend the coronial inquest due to recommence in a matter of weeks and will not be commenting publicly in the meantime," the statement to Fairfax Media read.

NSW Deputy State Coroner Elaine Truscott will oversee an inquest into Matt's death from December 7.

For the past eight years, Matt's parents, Mark and Faye Leveson, have fought for justice for their son's murder.

This includes going to the Royal National Park under a full moon and light cloud cover to look for their murdered son's body.

Mr Leveson believes it was under those conditions that the killer disposed of his son's body.

Based on the odometer in Matthew's car, the pair have calculated a search radius, which has sent them looking through bushland and various roadside locations for Matt's remains.

Mrs Leveson said the couple drove during the night "to see what we could see and picked out places".

"The whole time we are looking at the side of the road, not enjoying the trip, and thinking could a car have gotten in there, was that gate locked?

"Most families go out to the bush for picnics, we go looking for bones."

Ms Leveson said the one thing she wants is to bring Matty home.

"We want to know how, why and when and to be able to locate his body, that's a win for us," she said.

"If we bring him home, hopefully justice will follow. Nobody was given the chance to say goodbye to Matty.

"We don't even know if he suffered, how terrified he was."

The last known contact Matthew made was a text to a friend at 3.30am on the day he went missing. It said "He needs to f___en get over himself."

A $100,000 reward is on offer for any information that will allow Mr and Ms Leveson to finally lay their son to rest ? the location of Matthew's body.

The NSW double jeopardy law changes because of the Bowraville kids, did that go through yet? Could they actually get him for this at some point now?

I missed it but saw all the ads that were running. I've seen his face on the mis pers list for years now but I think the actual crime happened when my kids were babies (ie lots of Wiggles, no news) & I missed all of the back story. I've wondered though, he was such a happy looking young guy

The idea of his dad out there in the National Park at night is just fucking awful

'He did it': Matthew Leveson's mother breaks down during inquest into son's death

The mother of missing Sydney man Matthew Leveson fled a coronial inquest in distress today, shouting “he did it” at the 53-year-old man who was acquitted of her son’s murder.

Faye Leveson, whose son has been missing since September 2007, stood and shook her finger at Michael Atkins, who was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter after five days of jury deliberations in 2009.

“He did it. He did it. We just want his body back,” Ms Leveson cried out during an unscheduled adjournment at the Glebe Coroners Court in Sydney, as she broke down in frustration.

The courtroom altercation followed revelations Mr Atkins waited almost four days until he first attempted to call Mr Leveson’s mobile phone, a coronial inquest heard.

Mr Atkins made that call around 9am on 27 September, 2007 - just hours after Sutherland Police had twice telephoned him that same morning to make enquiries about his missing partner.

The phone call went to the voice mail of Mr Leveson’s red mobile phone, which police later discovered underneath a mat in the passenger seat side of Mr Atkin’s car.

Giving evidence at a coroner’s inquiry today, Detective Senior Constable Scott Craddock confirmed all calls and text messages made in and out from Mr Atkins’ phone in the four-day period after Mr Leveson went missing.

Phone data revealed Mr Atkins had largely ignored incoming calls and text messages from the Leveson family in the days after Matthew went missing.

Several hours after Mr Atkins had made that first call to Mr Leveson, the court heard he then sent a text message to an unknown number.

Police traced the owner of that phone, a Sydney male who confirmed he did not know Mr Atkins or Mr Leveson, but that he was active on gay dating websites in 2007, Det. Craddock told the inquest.

A homicide detective also contended Mr Atkins’s body language and eyes suggested he had wanted to give police more information when three officers drove him to the scene where Mr Leveson’s abandoned car was found.

The Toyota Corolla was discovered on September 27 outside public toilets at Waratah Oval in Sutherland, a well-known gay cruise spot.

Leveson’s body has never been found, since he vanished in September 2007. He was last seen leaving inner-city Sydney gay nightclub ARQ with Atkins.

During the 2009 trial, Atkins’ defence argued Mr Leveson may have met foul play at the hands of drug dealers or a stranger involved in casual gay sex at Waratah Oval.
