Justin Ewers was worried.

Another storm with freezing rain was coming to blanket roads in DeKalb County with a slick layer of ice. A group of longtime friends got together Saturday in Lee to laugh and enjoy each other's company - but 26-year-old Justin Ewers kept looking at the weather.

A resident of Shabbona with his wife, Kim, and their two sons, Ewers drove a plow truck through the streets of DeKalb during the winter. Friends and family members described him as a helpful man who often went out of his way for others.

The group of friends decided to drive to another friend's house in Scarborough. Justin and Kim Ewers, 27, got into his Ford F-250 four-door pickup truck with Eric Fultz, 23, Jamie Deutsch, 35, Adam Huber, 21, and Kyle Davis, 22, all of Shabbona.

Christopher Quinn, 38, of Sycamore, William Payne, 28, of Amboy and Joshua Burton, 21, of Lee also came along. Nine people got into a vehicle built for six passengers.

“He thought he was going to have to plow snow that next morning,” Deutsch said of Justin Ewers. “He wasn't drinking. We figured we would stay in Scarborough and wait until the storm passed and we could go home by Sunday afternoon. He wanted to take care of everyone else, but we all decided to go.”

Around 1:30 a.m., the truck was heading west on Lee Road and slid into a drainage ditch on the south side of the street, east of Paw Paw Road. Quinn, Fultz and the Ewerses were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by the Lee County coroner, Deputy Coroner Marty Meyer said Monday afternoon during a phone interview.
