Man killed after trying to help

By: JOHN HALL - Staff Writer

LAKE ELSINORE -- A Lake Elsinore man was stabbed to death after telling his killer to stop harassing a couple of transients outside a business, homicide investigators said Monday.

Shane Elijah Maclachlan, 35, was pronounced dead at 10:16 p.m. at Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, according to the Riverside County coroner's office.

About 45 minutes earlier, Lake Elsinore police were called to the Kentucky Fried Chicken on Riverside Drive after receiving a report of a fight in progress. Officers arrived to find Maclachlan stabbed and lying in the parking lot.

Investigators determined there had been a confrontation just before the victim was stabbed.

There were a couple of transients in an alley between the restaurant and a coin laundry next door, said Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. John Schultz, a supervisor with the Central Homicide Unit.

"When the victim and his friends came out of the KFC, there were two, possibly three ... Hispanic males harassing the transients," Schultz said.

Maclachlan said something to the men harassing the transients, "like 'leave them alone' in some way or another," Schultz said.

That's when the deadly confrontation began.

One of the Latinos tore off his shirt and pulled a two-sided dagger from a sheath on his belt, authorities said. Schultz estimated that the knife was about 7 or 8 inches long.

Maclachlan was stabbed one time in the lower back, the sergeant said. Autopsy results have yet to be released.

The Latinos then fled in a pickup described as a newer model black, full-size truck.

The man suspected of stabbing Maclachlan is described as being in his late 20s or early 30s, 5 feet, 10 inches to 6 feet tall, heavy set, with a large tattoo on his chest.

Authorities ask that anyone with information about the crime or the assailant's whereabouts call Investigator Ed Rose with central homicide at (951) 955-2777 or Lake Elsinore police at (951) 245-3301.

Wasn't there a discussion about Joel Battershell on here?

On April 6, 2004, Vancouver Police Officer Steven Lobdell
responded to a call from Grace Smith, Battershell’s girlfriend,
reporting that she and her sister had found pictures of minors
engaged in sexual activity on Battershell’s computer. Smith
had been living at Battershell’s home for three months and
was given permission to use the computer so that she and her
sister could look for jobs online. Smith and her sister told
Officer Lobdell that while using Battershell’s computer they
had opened a file entitled “Potter,” in which they saw pictures
of “kids having sex.” Smith and her sister also told the officer
that Battershell was the only Windows user.
Smith and her sister opened the “Potter” folder and gave
Officer Lobdell permission to view several small thumbnail
photos. It was clear that some of the photos showed undressed
people, but Officer Lobdell enlarged two pictures to see more
details. According to Officer Lobdell’s report, which was
included in the warrant application, the first picture showed
“a young female (8-10 YOA) naked in a bathtub. The second
picture showed another young female having sexual inter-
course with an adult male. This confirmed that the pictures
    were illegal to obtain.”

Definitely. Don't know what happened to it though- the article isn't on the main page either. Didn't a relative comment in the thread? Maybe they asked for it to be removed?

Thanks for confirming that.  I don't know what happened to it then.  Since Mike left his name in the first post I wasn't sure.
