Eva Maria Johnston Jacobs Shot to Death After Calling 911 to Report Break-In

I looked on myspace (and here) and couldn't find anything so far.  bastard(s) killed the woman and her dog

The details remind me a bit of the Horowitz case (well, the victim's living situation at least...)

So the police are now saying that they think the motive was robbery.  They are also investigating whether or not the incident was drug related as they found marijuana around the residence, and deposits in her checkbook with the work 'crop' in the memo.

The following is a transcript of the 911 call made by Eva Jacobs on Nov. 26, 2007. Portions of the conversation are difficult to understand because Jacobs is speaking in a low voice and because she is gasping for breath at times. WRAL has decided not to air or post audio from the call.

Dispatcher: Orange County 911. This is Rob.

Eva Jacobs: I (pause, heavy breathing), I (pause), I've been shot. 7-1-2-1 (unintelligible) Road. I'm dying. (Unintelligible)

    Dispatcher: Ma'am, what's your address?

Jacobs: 7-1-2-1 Compton Road (heavy sigh, then unintelligible). Please hurry.

Dispatcher: OK, ma'am. What's wrong? Tell me exactly what happened.

    Jacobs: I've been robbed.

    Dispatcher: You've been robbed?

Jacobs: (Breathing, unintelligible) Came to my house. They shot both my legs. (Heavy breathing)

    Dispatcher: You've been robbed, ma'am?

    Jacobs: I don't know.

Dispatcher: You don't know? When did this happen, ma'am?

Jacobs: They tried to take money. They tried to get my, my, but I told them (breathing) ... Oh, oh, hurry please (breathing, then call drops).

Re: Eva Marie Johnson Jacobs Shot to Death After Calling 911 to Report Break-In

They keep saying she was shot after she called but in the transcripts she says she's already been shot...that is so scary.

I wonder if it was someone her son owed money to because her husband says they asked for her son? I.don't get it...the husband was there but wasn't hurt and can not provide a description?

As for a myspace...eh, I don't know she was 49 but then again my 51 year old mother has a MySpace.

    RIP Eva

    Indeed.
If these young men used a phone instead of a gun, then they could have called for the money.

updated the name of the thread since it appears wral may have misreported...

Truck sought in connection with woman's death (11/27/07)

    From Staff Reports
Authorities are seeking a white full-sized, extended cab truck, possibly a Ford, in connection with the death of a Cedar Grove woman who was killed Monday during a home invasion.

Eva Maria Johnston Jacobs, 49, called 911 about 9:50 a.m. to report the break-in at her home at 7121 Compton Road but before Orange County Sheriff's deputies could respond, Jacobs had been shot.

She died on the way ot UNC Hospitals, said Ed Johnston, a family member.

Neighbors described the area in northern Orange County as quiet and peaceful, where most residents know each other. But several violent break-ins have happened within a couple of miles of Jacobs' home in recent years.

The sheriff's office described the suspects as two or three black males but did not provide other distinguishing characteristics, such as weight, skin tone or clothing.

Anyone with information about this crime should call the Orange County Sheriff's Office at 919-644-3050.

Woman shot dead in home invasion (11/27/07)
Quiet area has been shaken by break-ins in recent years

    Jessica Rocha, Staff Writer
A Cedar Grove woman was shot and killed during a home invasion Monday morning, family and friends said.

Eva Maria Johnston Jacobs, 49, called 911 about 9:50 a.m. to report the break-in at her home at 7121 Compton Road, Orange County communications Lt. Bobby Patton said.

But before Orange County Sheriff's deputies could respond, Jacobs had been shot. She died on the way to UNC Hospitals, said Ed Johnston, a family member who answered the phone Monday.

Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass did not return calls.

Monday afternoon, neighbors slowly drove by the Jacobs' green frame home and trailer on Compton Road in northwest Orange County. The home appeared to be under construction. Chickens wandered and a horse stood corralled nearby.

Yellow tape blocked off the gravel driveway, and sheriff's deputies continued to look around the property well into late afternoon.

Neighbors described the area as quiet and peaceful, where most residents know each other. But several violent break-ins have happened within a couple of miles of Jacobs' home in recent years.

    * In June 2004, the owner of Emma's Quick Stop & Bait Shop at Mill Creek Road and Carr Store Road was found shot to death behind the cash register.

    * In October 2006, an 18-year-old shot and killed one of two intruders who broke into his family's home on Cedar Valley Road.

    * Two months ago, Joe Gaya, the owner of Corbett Store at the intersection of Carr Store Road and N.C. 86, almost died after being stabbed several times in the head and shoulder in the store after a man who asked to buy gas on credit was denied.

Gaya hasn't reopened the store. It's just not worth the risk, he said.

"You really don't expect it in a country store like this," he said Monday.

On Monday afternoon, people gathered to grieve at Jacobs' family's house on New Sharon Church Road. A line of cars and trucks proceeded up a long driveway marked with a sign that read "Sharon Oaks Stables," and outside the home people hugged and cried.

Re: Eva Maria Johnston Jacobs Shot to Death After Calling 911 to Report Break-In

    Drugs found after slaying (11/29/07)
    Woman's finances also draw scrutiny

Jessica Rocha and Samuel Spies, Staff Writers
HILLSBOROUGH - Eva Jacobs was broke, her father said.

She owed several thousand dollars to creditors and had filed for bankruptcy once, according to court records.

Yet her checkbook noted deposits of at least $600 several times recently; court records say almost every other day.

That fact, and marijuana found on the property where Jacobs and her former husband continued to live, led Orange County sheriff's deputies to search 7121 Compton Road for evidence of other drug activity hours after Jacobs, 49, was fatally shot Monday morning.

Before she lost consciousness, Jacobs told a deputy that two or three black men had broken into the residence and left in a white Ford truck; in a 911 call, she said they were looking for money. Investigators have not provided a more detailed description of the suspects.

Jacobs left behind two grown children and other relatives, said her father, Ed Johnston.

His daughter was a generous woman, passionate about animals and horses in particular, he said. She had an innate connection with them, Johnston said.

Jacobs was "very independent," he added. "She did good for everybody. She was always helping somebody. That was her nature, really."

Johnston said the assailants also killed one of his daughter's dogs and shot a second one that is recovering with a vet.

"We loved her a whole lot. We worked together as a family. She was a very talented person," he said.

Jacobs had worked as an interior decorator but had been out of work after a foot injury, Johnston said.

He was surprised to hear about the marijuana and said he had recently lent her money.

Johnston said he didn't care what was found. "These guys murdered my daughter," he said. "That's got nothing to do with this.

"I don't care what she had there, if in fact what you say is true, and I'm not sure it's true," Johnston said.

    Just catch them, he said.

In the 1990s, Eva Jacobs and Don Jacobs, her husband at the time, filed for bankruptcy, court records show.

    Apparently, the money troubles continued.

In 2006, Bank of America filed a civil complaint over almost $8,000 in credit card debt.

Also in 2006, Jacobs was in a car wreck, which resulted in civil damages of about $2,300.

At some point, however, Jacobs had started receiving payments of $600 to $1,000 regularly, according to court records.

In a search warrant affidavit requesting to search Jacobs' property Monday, Orange County sheriff's investigators say her checkbook recorded several deposits "just about every other day."

The word crop was written beside the deposits, according to the affidavit.

Investigators also spotted marijuana residue in a large metal pot in a closet, and a baggie with the words "grade 4 premium grade 3 1/4." The windows of the shop where Don Jacobs said he lived also appeared to have been blacked out, according to the affidavit.

Investigator Doug Koehler wrote that the drug evidence made him think more evidence could be found relevant to the shooting.

He got permission to seize drugs, drug paraphernalia and evidence from the shooting, among other things.

Deputies found marijuana and a marijuana plant in an upstairs bedroom, an upstairs main room and a garage shower stall, according to the search warrant.

Police think truck tied to Orange death (12/14)
    From Staff Reports

HILLSBOROUGH - Orange County sheriff's deputies think they have found the white pickup truck involved in the shooting death of Eva Maria Johnston Jacobs at her Compton Road home last month, according to a news release.

After the Nov. 26 shooting, deputies searched Jacobs' and her ex-husband's property for evidence and drugs they thought could be related to Jacobs' death, which was described as a home-invasion.

Evidence found Wednesday in a white 2000 Ford F-150 found in Durham the day before has led investigators to think they have found the truck used in the shooting. According to the release, deputies are looking for suspects, whom they declined to name in order to protect the investigation

Re: Eva Maria Johnston Jacobs Shot to Death After Calling 911 to Report Break-In

Prosecutor: Orange County Murder Suspect Stole Gun, Pot (12/20)

Hillsborough — Authorities have made an arrest in connection with the November shooting death of an Orange County woman killed during a break-in at her home.

Sheriff's investigators have charged Doné Octavous Johnson, 20, with murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the death of Eva Marie Johnson Jacobs, 49.

In court Thursday, a prosecutor said Johnson stole a shotgun and stole $300 worth of marijuana from Jacobs' home.

A search warrant was issued at 245 Harper Street where Johnson spent the night before his arrest. Johnson lives in multiple places in Hillsborough, authorities said. Details of that search warrant are not yet known.

On Nov. 26, Jacobs called 911 about a break-in in progress at her 7121 Compton Road home in Cedar Grove on the morning of her death, but a deputy found her wounded in both legs on her porch. She was pronounced dead at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

A search of the residence turned up evidence of marijuana, according to an earlier search warrant. Authorities found marijuana in a couch, the floor of an upstairs bedroom and a shower stall in the garage.

Investigators also found Jacobs' checkbook, which listed deposits ranging from $600 to $1,000 every other day. Each of the deposits had the word "crop" written beside it on the memo line, according to the search warrant.

Investigators said they were looking for three men who were last seen in a white, full-size, extended cab truck, possibly a Ford. On Dec. 11, authorities found a white Ford F-150 believed to have been driven by the men. The vehicle was taken to the State Bureau of Investigation crime lab for processing.

Authorities are still looking for the other two individuals. Their descriptions have not yet been released by authorities.

Johnson was given a court-appointed attorney. His next court appearance will be Jan. 3. He is being held without bond in the Orange County Jail.

In a separate incident, reporters were delayed in leaving the courtroom because of an scuffle in the hallway involving a prisoner.

Second Man Charged in Orange County Slaying (12/21)

Hillsborough — A second man was charged Friday in a November home break-in that left an Orange County woman dead.

Reshaun Cates, 20, of 511 Park Ave. in Durham, has been charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the death of Eva Marie Johnson Jacobs.

Cates had been in the Durham County Jail on unrelated charges.

District Judge Joe Buckner denied bond for Cates, who was given a court-appointed attorney. His next court date is scheduled for Jan. 7.

Jacobs died Nov. 26 after she called 911 about a break-in in progress at her Compton Road home in Cedar Grove.

Doné Octavous Johnson, 20, appeared in court Thursday on similar charges. Prosecutors said Johnson stole a shotgun and $300 worth of marijuana from Jacobs' home.

Re: Eva Maria Johnston Jacobs Shot to Death After Calling 911 to Report Break-In

3rd Suspect in Orange Co. Slaying Wanted in 2 Durham Shootings (12/21)

Hillsborough — Durham police officers on Friday afternoon apprehended a suspect in at least three shootings, including the murder of an Orange County woman inside her home.

Officers went to the 1700 block of Avondale Drive to find Montez Antonio Stevons, 20, of Durham. Stevons spotted the officers and fled, but police caught him after a brief foot chase.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office has charged Stevons with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon for the Nov. 26 slaying of Eva Jacobs during a break-in at her Orange County home.

Durham police wanted Stevons in connection with two shootings. Officers believe Stevons shot a 33-year-old man during a Nov. 3 home invasion on House Avenue and shot a 19-year-old male on Morehead Avenue on Sept. 25.

The state Department of Corrections listed Stevons as "an absconder from probation/parole supervision." He was sentenced on July 30 to 36 months' probation for conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Stevons had been given probation three other times since 2004 in Durham County for charges including assault with a deadly weapon.

Stevons was placed in the Durham County Jail and given no bond. His first court appearance had not yet been scheduled.

Durham police were still looking for Cedric Antonio Joint, 20, whom they consider a second suspect in the House Avenue shooting. Joint frequents the areas of Sedgefield Street and the West End.

Anyone with information on Joint’s whereabouts is asked to call Investigator Freeman at 919-560-1020, ext. 238 or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200. CrimeStoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases, and callers never have to identify themselves.

Earlier Friday, Reshaun Cates, 20, of 511 Park Ave. in Durham, was also charged in Jacobs' death. Cates was already in the Durham County Jail on unrelated charges.

Doné Octavous Johnson, 20, of Hillsborough, was the first to be charged in the murder and robbery. He appeared in court on Thursday.

Jacobs died Nov. 26 after she called 911 about a break-in in progress at her Compton Road home in Cedar Grove. Prosecutors said that a shotgun and $300 worth of marijuana were stolen from Jacobs' home.
