Wife charged in death of newlywed husband

On his wedding day three months ago, Michael Forbes made a special announcement to his guests: He and his new wife would be moving into a beautiful home in Merrick.

"Everyone thought it was nice, was happy for him," his uncle, Cecil Dudley, said Thursday.

No one realized how horribly wrong things on Frankel Boulevard would turn.

On Wednesday morning, Kelly Forbes grabbed a long, orange, heavy-duty electrical cord, put it around her husband's neck and strangled him, Nassau police said Thursday. Forbes, 29, called 911 on a cell phone from the house. When paramedics and police arrived, they found Michael Forbes, 50, on the floor in a room next to the master suite. He was unresponsive and died about an hour later at 10 a.m., at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.

Kelly Forbes made incriminating statements to police and was charged with second-degree murder late Tuesday night, said prosecutor Michael Canty said. Thursday morning, she was led out of police headquarters to her arraignment in First District Court. She kept her head down, her black hair covering her face, and sobbed loudly when reporters began asking questions about the charges.

"This is obviously the most serious charge that she could face," Judge Sharon Gianelli said. Forbes stared straight ahead, dressed in a long, black coat. Six family members, including her father, stood silently in a front row bench.

Citing the suspect's ties outside the United States -- her home country is Trinidad, although she is a legal resident here -- and the strength of the prosecution's case, Gianelli ordered Forbes held without bail at the Nassau County jail.

"I'm not going to make any statements right now, nor will her family," said her attorney, Matthew Smalls of Williston Park, outside of court.

What led to the death of Michael Forbes remains unclear. Det. Sgt. Gregory Quinn of the Homicide Squad said police were unaware of any financial difficulties between the two. Police had not been called to the home for any domestic disputes since they began living there this fall, he said.

Aside from being considerably older, Michael Forbes was also much larger than his wife: Police said he stood 6'1" and weighed 250 pounds; she is 5'5" and weighs 150. Quinn said they do not believe Forbes was sleeping when he was attacked and that there were "minor" signs of a struggle. He said toxicology tests that would reveal if Michael Forbes was under the influence of anything when he died are pending. Kelly Forbes was unemployed but previously worked as a medical assistant.

"We're also looking into any problems they might have had during their relationship," Quinn said. He said police hadn't found anything to suggest the murder was planned.

Forbes' daughter, who will turn 8 next week, was in the home when her stepfather died, but police do not believe she witnessed anything. She is in the custody of relatives.

Michael Forbes was in the real estate business with his family, police said.

The couple had known each other for about a year. Dudley said they'd had a Caribbean-style wedding at a church in Brooklyn. Earlier this week, he'd called his nephew to confirm that he and his wife would spend Thanksgiving with him.

"He said he'll be there," Dudley recalled. "They seemed like they cared for each other. It's almost like a dream."

Seems to be the big "?" in the investigation, doesn't it?
