WSCC baseball player dies in wreck BY ROBERT MOORE, Tribune Staff Writer

A Walters State Community College baseball player died this morning after his car slid underneath a tractor-trailer on Jarnagin Avenue. Andrew Wilmot, an 18-year-old freshman catcher, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officer Ricky Sanders, a member Morristown Police Department public information team. Sanders said the crash remains under investigation and it’s currently unknown what factors may have contributed to the crash. No charges have been filed in connection with the fatal crash. Wilmot attended Henry County High School in McDonough, Ga. He had been living in Church Hill since classes began this fall. Dr. Foster Chason, vice president for Student Affairs and director of athletics, and Ken Campbell, baseball coach, learned of the accident early this morning. Campbell said he was shocked and saddened by the news. "Andrew was an excellent student-athlete here at Walters State," Campbell said. "He was well-liked by his teammates and he’s going to be missed. We pray for his family and they will continue to be in our thoughts." Campbell told the baseball team about Wilmot’s death during a morning meeting. "This is a shock and is a tremendous loss to the Walters State family," the coach said. "Our thoughts and our prayers are with the team and Andrew’s family." The fatal crash occurred shortly before 3:50 a.m. in the sharp corner where Jarnagin Avenue becomes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, according to officer Brian Sulfridge, an MPD traffic reconstructionist. Wilmot was southbound in a Dodge Intrepid when his vehicle skidded out of control, according to Sulfridge. The car skidded underneath a northbound tractor-trailer rig operated by Morristown resident Carroll Wassun, a driver for First Fleet Corp. The collision reportedly crushed and sheared off the top of Wilmot’s car. Emergency-services personnel worked for more than an hour to remove Wilmot’s body from the wreckage. Eddie Davis, Hamblen County coroner, said the primary cause of death was chest trauma. Wilmot was not wearing a seat belt, but the coroner says he doesn’t believe a restraining device would have saved Wilmot’s life. The engine of Wilmot’s vehicle caught fire. MPD patrol officers contained the small blaze until firefighters arrived. Wassun was uninjured. Chason says Wilmot was the second Walters State student to be killed in an automobile accident in the recent weeks. Students and staff were saddened by the September death of Jenilyn Franklin, a student at the college’s Sevier County campus. "It reminds us of our precious life is," Chason said.
