Ohio Minister Shot and Wife Killed

Minister shot, wife slain in Wellington; son held
Sunday, October 21, 2007John CanigliaPlain Dealer Reporter
Wellington- A Lorain County pastor was in critical condition and his wife was dead after they were shot in their home Saturday night on rural Peck-Wadsworth Road.

Authorities said the couple's 16-year-old son was a suspect, but they would not give details of what took place. Wellington police found him and took him into custody after officers spotted the family minivan in Wellington.

Officers were preparing to search a residence late Saturday.

Mark Petric, 45, was in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. His wife, Sue, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Relatives found them in their home about 7 p.m.

Stephen Evans, a deputy Lorain County coroner, said Mark and Sue Petric were found sitting on separate couches in the family's living room in their ranch home. Mark Petric was shot in the face, while his wife had been shot in the head and arm.

Relatives, who came to the home to watch the Indians game, found their bodies. Evans said three people - the couple and their son - were in the home at the time of the shooting.

The couple were pastors at New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, according to the church's Web site. They had been at the small, close-knit congregation on West Street for two years and had moved into their home in April, the Web site said.

No one answered a call to the church late Saturday night.

A neighbor declined to comment, saying the family deserved privacy. Other neighbors said the rural setting prevented many people from getting to know the family.

LOL. Sorry, I thought it would be ok since i didn't say and "killed wife". Apparently it was over a video game. The son was home for his first visit because he is undergoing mental treatment or something. (this is all between town gossip and news articles). I don't know the family, they moved here a few years ago and I refuse to set foot in a church.

Daniel Petric, 16, to be charged with slaying mother, wounding father, a pastor in Wellington
He killed his mother, shot pastor father, police say Monday, October 22, 2007Michael Sangiacomo and Jesse TinsleyPlain Dealer Reporters
Elyria- Authorities plan to charge a 16-year-old today on suspicion of killing his mother and seriously wounding his pastor father.

Daniel Petric is likely to face a murder charge at a magistrate hearing this afternoon, said Capt. Rich Resendez of the Lorain County Sheriff's Office. Daniel was being held Sunday at the Lorain County Detention Home.

His mother, Sue, 43, was pronounced dead Saturday at their home in Brighton Township, outside Wellington. His father, Mark, 45, was in guarded condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland after being shot in the face. He has been in and out of consciousness since the shooting, said Hal Stiles, a member of New Life Assembly of God, where Mark Petric is pastor.

Resendez said Sunday that Daniel acted alone and is "responsible for the tragic acts." Daniel is a "typical 16-year-old," a Wellington High School junior who liked skateboarding and may have argued with his parents in the past, Resendez said.

Resendez did not give a motive or say whether the crime was premeditated, just that there were no signs of struggle and that Daniel "indicated some reasoning."

However, for the congregation that relied on the Petrics, Sunday was not a day to ask why. Instead, members of New Life Assembly of God comforted one another.

More than 75 church members at Sunday morning services said they need to come together as a family and work through the crisis, and forgive.

"We're not here to answer the two questions we all want answered: 'What happened and why?' " said Joel Soza, a former pastor at New Life who returned to run the service that Mark Petric would have officiated. "Let's not even try to answer those questions, because we can't until more information comes out.

"We need to pray for Pastor Mark's recovery and for his daughters, Heidi and Holly, and pray for Danny as well," Soza said. "We can't forget him in all this."

Daughter Heidi Archer and her husband, Andrew, found the Petrics just before 7 p.m. Saturday when they arrived at the ranch house on Peck-Wadsworth Road to watch the Indians play the Boston Red Sox in the Major League Baseball playoffs.

Daniel Petric tried to block the Archers at the door. But they pushed their way in, where they saw Mark and Sue Petric sitting on perpendicular couches in the living room, Resendez said. Mark Petric was shot once in the face, while his wife had been shot in the back of the head and through both forearms.

The wounds were recent, and a 9 mm gun - probably Mark Petric's - was found at the scene, Resendez said.

Andrew Archer, 23, gave his father-in-law first aid, while Heidi Archer, 21, called 9-1-1 at 6:58 p.m., Resendez said.

"The first aid that Andrew applied to Mark possibly did save him," Resendez said.

Meanwhile, Daniel called Andrew's brother, Steven Archer, 18, in Medina County, Resendez said. The teens were friendly, and Daniel fled the house when his sister arrived and started to drive to Steven's home in Litchfield Township.

Wellington police pulled Daniel over in the family's Ford Windstar minivan about 7:10 p.m., Resendez said. They arrested him and held him for sheriff's deputies.

His other sister, Holly, 17, was working at a fast-food restaurant, Resendez said.

The family moved to Wellington in 2003 and into their seven-acre Brighton Township home in April. Before moving to Wellington, they were youth and associate pastors at Eastgate Assembly of God near Columbus and had worked as house parents for troubled teens at the Choice Place Boy's Home in Ashland.

"Sue was the perfect pastor's wife," New Life church member Kathie Stiles said. "She and I were becoming very good friends. She was always there helping out everyone. She was mischievous as well: I remember one time she brought a whoopee cushion to a ladies auxiliary meeting."

News of the shooting spread in minutes through the small town. But no church members wanted to speculate on what caused the shooting, and no one would talk about young "Danny."

"I don't understand why people feel they need to know everything when a tragedy like this occurs," said Hal Stiles, who is Kathie Stiles' husband. "The facts will come out. Meanwhile, Mark and his family were easy to love, they were just like the rest of us."
