Alaska Airlines flight makes emergency landing after door plug for emergency exit blows out midflight

    https://nypost.com/2024/01/06/news/a...ut-mid-flight/

I need to stop reading these or Im going to be scared to fly again.

An Alaska Airlines flight turned into a nightmare when a section of the plane blew out mid-flight, reportedly sucking out passengers? belongings and forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing in Portland.

The Ontario, California-bound plane departed Portland International Airport at 4:52 p.m. Friday but returned just 35 minutes later following the terrifying ordeal, according to data from flight tracking website Flight Aware.

Another fucking MAX, probably assembled at the non-union Boeing plant in SC. Also, it wasn't a window. It was a door plug with a window in it. They have a seat configuration where they don't use this opening as an emergency exit at Alaska, so this door plug with a window in it is bolted in place. Word on the street at this point is that some of the bolts were never put in at the plant. This is a brand new plane.

Please tell me what a MAX is so I never get on one in my life.

It's a model of the 737, and if you fly on Delta, American, Southwest, United, Alaska, or Allegiant (soon), there's a good chance you will be on one.

They will be about half Airbus and half Boeing soon. Trust me, you're not doing much flying and avoiding the MAX these days.

My oldest flew out to Tennessee yesterday, and of course my husband sent him this article before his flight. He's such a dick.

We usually fly American. Luckily only once every few years. We prefer the auto train and having our own vehicle for those Florida trips.

She said the cabin was depressurized. Did they need oxygen? And how did they all not get sucked out?

Yes, you can tell from the way she was talking that she is on the mask (it's different than the ones in the cabin, it fits tight and makes a sucking sound when they talk). This is why they tell you to have your seatbelt on at all times even once they turn off the seatbelt sign. There have been other catastrophic explosive depressurization events on other planes in the past that have sucked people out. They got lucky this time. I heard that it pulled the headrests and part of one seat off the two nearest seats. Luckily no one was sitting in them.

Lots of good memes flying around in the pilot world today.

Missing door plug that detached from Alaska Airlines plane found in Oregon teacher's backyard

A missing door plug that could be key to the investigation into what caused it to detach from a plane midflight Friday has been found in the backyard of a Portland, Oregon-area resident, officials said Sunday.

Two cell phones have also been found — one in a yard and another on the side of the road, she said.

At the end of the first full day of the NTSB investigation into the accident on board Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, the agency's chair indicated that some factors were complicating the probe: The plane’s cockpit voice recorder’s record of the event was inadvertently taped over, and, at the time, the door plug had not been found.

“That is unfortunately a loss for us,” Homendy said, lamenting the loss of voice data and sounding frustrated during a news conference Sunday night, "Because that information is key, not just for our investigation, but for improving aviation safety.”

Homendy said the NTSB is calling for expanding the minimum time recorded on the devices from two hours to 25 hours. Such a time span would have saved the cockpit voice data from Friday’s accident.

The incident happened very early in the flight. The seatbelt sign was still on, very lucky for everyone. And, apparently, no one was sitting in the seat closest to the gaping hole. And they got the plane down to a level where the passengers had air in a hurry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43W8lC3csRU

I read a little boy got his shirt sucked off. So glad he didnt get sucked out.

    https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/06/us/pa...nes/index.html

A boy’s shirt was ripped clean off his body, flying out the hole, amid the air pressure loss after a part of the plane’s fuselage blew off. Some passengers screamed and cried, drafting text messages to their loved ones as a rush of air entered the plane and oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling.

It was Alaska Airlines who had the entire roof ripped off in the past and people had to just sit there in their seats and land that way. Fucking terrifying. I believe a few were sucked out that time because they were either up walking around or didn't have their seat belts on. I believe a crew member included. I always leave my seat belt on unless I'm up going to the rest room. It isn't like it's uncomfortable and it's exactly because of shit like this.

You should totally go and not worry. You dont even have to wear a seatbelt.

It was actually Aloha. An old school 737. One person died, the flight attendant. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aloha_Airlines_Flight_243

You may be thinking about their jackscrew accident:

There have been several DC10's and 747's that have had cargo and door explosive decompression events that took out other parts of the airplane:

My mistake. My memory is such shit these days. I just remember how freaky it was seeing a plane with people in it and no roof. Scary AF.

Has anyone watched the documentary on Boeing? It's on Netflix and entitled, Downfall: The Case Against Boeing. It is infuriating.

Yes, it's definitely worth watching but is infuriating. I also recommend Boeing's Fatal Flaw.
