Melissa Hoskins (32) Australian Olympic Bicyclist killed by her husband who ran her down while on her bike

Two-time Olympic cyclist Melissa Hoskins dies aged 32 after being hit by car.

Australian Olympic track cyclist and former world champion Melissa Hoskins has died aged 32, her country?s Olympic committee said on Monday. A statement released by South Australian Police on Sunday said that a 32-year-old woman had died after being a hit by a car driven by a man ?known to the woman,? in Adelaide, Australia. Local media named the woman as Hoskins.

The woman ?suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment,? the police statement said. ?Sadly, she died in hospital overnight.? Australia?s national broadcaster ABC and other local media outlets reported that Hoskins? husband Rohan Dennis, a two-time world time trial champion and a stage winner at the Tour de France, had been arrested and charged with causing her death.

The police statement did not name the 33-year-old man who has been ?arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and endangering life.? The police statement added that the man has been bailed and is due to appear at the Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 13.

CNN has contacted both the South Australian Police and Adelaide Magistrates Court, asking for confirmation that Dennis was the man arrested and charged as well as the date of his court appearance. CNN has also reached out to Dennis via his website and his management team for comment.

A police spokesperson told Reuters that its policy is to not confirm the names of those accused involved in an incident.

Hoskins was a successful track cyclist, becoming a world champion and setting a world record in 2015 as part of Australia?s women?s team pursuit quartet. She competed at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games in the same event, missing out on a medal by just 0.181 seconds at the 2012 London Games. She retired in May 2017 after the Rio Olympic Games, married Dennis in February 2018 and had two children.

Figures across the cycling world paid tribute to Hoskins including her compatriot and Olympic gold medalist Anna Meares who said: ?I have a very heavy heart. My thoughts are with their children, family and fellow friends.? She added in her post on X, ?This is a very difficult and tragic time. RIP Melissa Hoskins.?

CPA Women, the worldwide association of female cyclists, posted on X that they were ?shocked by the news of Melissa Hoskins? death? and sent ?their thoughts to those who love her, starting with her children, and were lucky enough to ride with her during an all too short life.? Hoskins? former team, now known as Liv AlUla Jayco, said it was ?devastated? to learn of her death.

?Our thoughts are with her family and friends and the whole cycling community at this deeply saddening time. She will never be forgotten,? the team said on X.

Do we know if the husband was following her on one of her rides or was it a fight/something else?

Not even sure. They're keeping tight lipped on it for now as far as I see. They won't even confirm that it was him, yet they arrested him so it's pretty obvious. I'm sure more will come out as the case goes forward, but I'm assuming that it was a fit of rage of some sort since it's not like he tried to hide the fact that he ran her down. Either way, it screams DV.

It sounds like a fight of some kind and if the details here are accurate, then definitely deliberate:

World champion cyclists Melissa Hoskins and Rohan Dennis were reportedly planning a new life together in South Australia's Adelaide Hills before he allegedly killed her on Saturday night. Dennis was arrested on Sunday and charged over his wife's death, accused of being behind the wheel of the ute that hit the mother-of-two outside their $2.45million home in Adelaide's inner-north.

Friends said Hoskins and Dennis were preparing for the next stage of their lives after retiring from professional sport and had considered buying a vineyard in Adelaide Hills, according to The Advertiser.

Dennis was spotted on Tuesday morning for the first time since his arrest, emerging from the family home to make a phone call in his backyard. Dressed casually in a T-shirt, Dennis was joined by another man while his two young children played behind the house.

Hoskins died at Royal Adelaide Hospital after she was hit by the couple's $70,000 Volkswagen Amarok Highline ute on Avenel Gardens Road, Medindie.

The 32-year-old allegedly jumped onto the bonnet of the Amarok and grabbed at a door handle before the vehicle was driven off and she fell to the ground. It is also alleged Hoskins may have been dragged along by the vehicle, with the incident captured on neighbours' security cameras.

Both Hoskins and Dennis competed for Australia at Olympic Games and each had won events at world cycling championships.

A pair of teenage neighbours tried to give first aid to Hoskins before paramedics arrived and she was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where she later died. Dennis has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and endangering life and was released on bail to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court again in March.

Just days earlier, the couple shared a family photo in front of a Christmas tree. Dennis was seen smiling from ear to ear in the photo shared on Instagram as he posed with Hoskins and their two young children.

'Merry Christmas from our family to yours,' he wrote in the caption.Several social media posts have since resurfaced of Dennis boasting about his wife and their two children.

Just two weeks ago, Dennis posted an image of himself and his wife laughing in a car on the way to a wedding.

'I finally did it, I finally made @melissmdennis lose the plot #lifegoalachieved,' the caption read.

When a friend replied 'it was only a matter of time', Dennis responded with laughing emojis: 'She was much harder to crack than I thought'.

Ah, so it was during a fight. Very sad how people react in anger.

There was an update with more details that I missed:

New details have emerged about the circumstances surrounding the death of beloved Australian cyclist Melissa Hoskins. Hoskins, 32, died last Saturday after being hit by a 4WD ute, allegedly driven by her husband Rohan Dennis, 33.

Dennis, who has two children with Hoskins, has been charged with dangerous driving causing the death of his wife as well as driving without due care and attention and endangering life. The couple were due to attend a Christmas street party on the night of Hoskins’ death but were no shows, The Australian reported.

According to the publication, it was around 8pm under clear skies when Hoskins jumped onto the bonnet of the ute and tried to grab the door handle in an attempt to stop the vehicle. Dennis allegedly continued to drive until his wife fell off the ute. She was allegedly dragged some way down the road, the publication reports.

Tragically the street where Hoskins lived is also home to a number of doctors and medical professionals but none of them knew what had happened until they heard sirens outside. One neighbour, who is a trauma surgeon, said he hadn’t noticed anything until he went outside to photograph Jupiter at around 10pm. “There was a police car parked in front of our driveway with the lights going,” he said. “Then a little bit later we saw a dark 4x4 being towed away by a tow truck.”

Another resident said: “It’s traumatic and very unusual. And the truth has to come out because something happened.”
