EDNA, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers are investigating a possible capital murder case involving a 16-year-old Texas cheerleader.
Lizbeth Medina's body was found Tuesday in her apartment in the small town of Edna, which is between Houston and Victoria.
Her mother was left heartbroken and is demanding justice. The family set up a GoFundMe account to help with expenses.
This ones a head scratcher. The perp would have to have gotten into and out of the apartment undetected. She was found dead in the bath tub. They arent releasing details.

I'll never understand why they 'need' so much to bury someone.

They dont. I *think* funeral are 10-15k. They also said its for "justice" for her. That made no sense to me.

The thing that made this personal for me, is that she was the only child, and was her mothers whole world. I can relate. She also found her body, which must have traumatized her

They are saying this is a capital murder case, so Im thinking it was a brutal murder, but they arent saying how she died.

Man charged with Lizbeth Medina's murder stalked apartment night before, police say

A sworn affidavit written by Detective Stacy Cavazos of the Edna Police Department said investigators believe Rafael Govea Romero, the man charged with Lizbeth’s murder, made previous visits to the girl’s apartment and exhibited “stalking-like behavior.”

Surveillance video from Lizbeth’s neighbor at Cottonwood Apartments led authorities to believe the man drove through the complex’s parking lot the night before the girl’s death.

Prior to Romero’s arrest, police released photos in the early morning hours of Dec. 9 of a man they now know to be him. The photos, from the neighbor’s surveillance video, show the suspect leaving the scene the morning of Lizbeth’s death on Dec. 5. In the photos, Romero appears to enter a silver Ford Taurus and flee.

Inspection of the same neighbor’s recording led police to believe the same car drove through the apartments around 10 p.m. the night before on Dec. 4, according to the detective’s statements in the affidavit.

“From this, it was believed that the suspect was planning his crime and/or stalking his future victim(s),” Cavazos wrote.

The apartment of Lizbeth and her mother was burglarized weeks before Lizbeth’s death on Nov. 13.

“I believe the burglary from 11/13/2023 could have had a connection with the murder suspect,” the detective also wrote.
Inside the apartment, Lizbeth had stab wounds, including at least one to her abdomen, and was soaking wet, which led investigators to believe her body had been washed of evidence after her death, the detective said in the affidavit. A preliminary autopsy report from Dec. 8 said the cause of death was “sharp force injuries.”

Police said items were missing from the apartment, including Lizbeth’s phone and wallet.

I wonder if they can use the find my phone feature to locate it. That poor Mother. Not only to lose her child but to have found the body. How do you recover from that? I don't know if I could.

They tracked it to where he was. From the article I posted above:
Police were quickly able to find the location of the phone through the cellular carrier. It led them to a mobile home park in Schulenburg where Romero was a resident. Authorities arrived at the residence on Dec. 9 and found Romero.

According to the affidavit, numerous items were found in Romero’s bedroom belonging to Lizbeth, which connected the man to her murder. Edna Police Chief Rick Boone told the Advocate the next day that the 23-year-old man had confessed to Lizbeth’s killing.

Very sad. I'm glad he was caught.

When you look at the GFM, the original goal was around 17K which is a little more than what the average funeral costs, but not by much. People kept donating and that's why it's gotten so high. So I don't think they were trying to be greedy. Unlike some people that set the goals at 80K and ridiculous amounts like that.
