A Virginia mother and her three young children have been missing for more than a week ? but frantic search efforts were only launched after the first few crucial days, police said.

Lauren Cook, 30, and her kids ? 7-year-old Benjamin, 5-year-old Hannah and 2-year-old Elijah ? vanished without a trace Sept. 5 after failing to show up at a family member?s home, according to Franklin County police.

Loved ones spent several days unsuccessfully trying to contact Cook before finally turning to the police for help.

Cook is married and lives with her husband, who shares custody of the three kids, police said.

?A lot of times you see these situations where a parent loses custody and takes the kids and runs away. This doesn?t seem to be like that.,? Sgt. Megan Huston, the department?s public information officer, told The Post.

In a post on Tuesday night, the sheriff’s office said the woman did not appear for a scheduled court appearance, which was originally rescheduled from Sept. 5.

According to the sheriff’s office, family members had lost contact with Cook and the kids several days prior.

Deputies told 10 News Tuesday afternoon that Cook’s husband said his family is safe but that he hadn’t communicated with them.

Now, investigators have shared that Cook and her children were confirmed to be in Litchfield, Illinois on Sept. 14. Authorities said they have connections in various other states and aren’t believed to be in Franklin County.

Law enforcement said at this point, there is no person of interest in this case.

Deputies said they have to lay eyes on them and make sure they are all okay before the missing persons alert can be cleared.

Authorities said Lauren Cook and her three children have been missing since early September, but Lauren Cook called us on Thursday to set the record straight.

"I just don't have any solid answers yet as to what's happening with this case," she said.

Our interview was conducted over an app that can't be tracked and began with a video call to confirm her identity.

She said this all starts from an anonymous report to social services alleging child abuse. Both she and her husband, Jordan Cook, said that the accusations were false.

"Putting an emergency removal order based on these allegations, it was overstepping their boundaries, in my opinion," Jordan said.

Despite a pending investigation, Lauren said a lawyer advised her that she could still go on a planned Labor Day vacation.


She decided to extend her vacation after she said she got some legal advice and was concerned the Department of Social Services was going to take her children away.

She missed two court dates, so I would assume they could issue a warrant for her. I'm considering her 'found' at this point. She has issues, but I don't think she's actually missing.

Supposedly they run a legal marijuana store and they had the kids in there, which is a big no-no. My guess is there are a lot of things they did, they seem sketchy to me, and all of it finally caught up with them and the authorities want to take the kids now.
