Engineering student Jaanhavi Kandula (23) struck and killed by a police officer while crossing the street; the police said she had "limited value"

    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-a...ute-rcna105262

After footage was released this week of a Seattle police officer saying 23-year-old Jaanhavi Kandula?s life ?had limited value? on the night of her death, those who knew and loved her want the world to know that the opposite is true.

Kandula was struck and killed by a different officer while she was crossing the street on Jan. 23. Officer Daniel Auderer, also the vice president of the police union, responded to the scene of the accident and was recorded on his body camera appearing to laugh about and make light of the woman's death.

?Yeah, just write a check,? Auderer was recorded saying on a phone call. ?She was 26 anyway,? he continued, getting Kandula?s age wrong. ?She had limited value.?
At Northeastern University?s Seattle campus, where Kandula had been pursuing a master?s degree, students and staff struggled to contend with what they heard in the recording.

Why won't they learn that they should just STFU?! Do they truly think there's anything that could make saying that and laughing ok?
The Seattle Police Officer?s Guild posted an online statement Friday acknowledging the backlash to the footage and detailing some of Auderer's conduct following the incident.

?Without context, this audio is horrifying and has no place in a civil society,? the statement said. ?The video captures only one side of the conversation. There is much more detail and nuance that has not been made public yet.?

That is sick. I dont care what context it was said in. Laughing about someone's death is fucking sick.

In my opinion engineer > cop. They have no possible way to know what she would have accomplished. That may be harsh. But thats how I feel.

I wondered if it was more to do with her being 26 (their mistake) and an unmarried Indian girl. I am curious about the race of the person who said that. I wondered if it was another Indian who holds those kinds of pre-conceived notions about women from his society. I'm probably totally wrong, but I had a lot of Indian friends at one point in my younger life and I know some of them thought this way.

I saw the video and I think I remember the cop saying that they should just write her family a check for $11,000. Implying that's all her life was worth. WTF?!

Any update on how the PD is handling this piece of dog shit?

This is a double but Im going to expand on my thought....

Think about it, this guy has a gun and other weapons he can legally use. He has a disregard for human life. Hes supposed to help people in trouble. I hope they dont just transfer him to another dept.

Someone can be a particular group and not 'sound' the way that group stereo typically sound. My husband flies with a devout Muslim Pakistani guy that sounds as Irish as they come. My husband's doctor, born in India and raised there until teen years, sounds like a Texan now because he did his medical school in my old neck of the woods. My husband, who is a mix of Irish/Pakistani/British but looks dark and people think he is Hispanic usually, spoke with the strongest British accent ever when I first met him but he lost it doing salesman work in Tx. Now he has a generic no particular place accent (at least to me, but others still ask him where he's from). Again, I'm not saying he is/isn't Indian because he's probably not. I just thought of that when I first hears what the cop said. Sorry, just my soapbox issue.

I thank God everyday that I don't sound like a southern hick.

I don't know how legit this SPD watchdog site is, but found this article with a history of disturbing incidents involving the officer in this case:

    https://divestspd.substack.com/p/spo...ird-irrelevant

2010: Auderer was one of several officers who stopped two Mexican immigrants under a false pretext. The officers were caught on camera verbally abusing them and roughly arresting them. One of the officers, Corey Williams, infamously threatened to “skull fuck” the pair. (He’s now the sergeant of crisis response.)

2010: Auderer was one of a dozen officers who savagely beat Brian Torgerson, a mentally ill man, causing permanent brain damage. SPD settled with Torgerson’s family for $1.75 million.

2014: Auderer received another complaint from a woman he arrested, who claimed he sexually harassed her in a holding cell. There was no audio of the incident, so OPA issued a training referral.

2015: Auderer punched and choked a homeless man inside the ER at Harborview Hospital. SPD’s Force Review Board ruled that the force was unjustified, but OPA ultimately cleared him.

2016: OPA investigated Auderer for using force against a Black woman while she was handcuffed. This is prohibited by SPD policy unless there are “exceptional circumstances.” OPA ruled that the force use—which occurred conveniently beyond the view of the in-car video—was “lawful and proper.”

2016: OPA investigated Auderer again for punching a woman in the face. He was cleared of any wrongdoing

2016: Auderer was suspended for four days for taking part in an arrest while on an off-duty ridealong with his brother, who is an officer in another jurisdiction. He violated the person’s Miranda rights & failed to report the arrest to a supervisor.

2018: Auderer was reprimanded for making demeaning, unnecessary comments about a woman’s mental health during a traffic stop.

And now this is how he is justifying what he said:

In addition to its statement, the guild released a statement it says Auderer wrote to the director of the Office of Police Accountability in August — more than six months after Kandula was killed — after being told of the video’s existence. The guild said he wrote the statement “directly from memory and without the ability to watch the video.”

In it, Auderer said that his comments were “sarcastic” and intended to mimic how a lawyer tasked with negotiating a settlement over Kandula’s death might try to minimize liability for it.

“Mike Solan asked me as he was lamenting the loss of life something similar to: ‘What crazy argument can a lawyer make in something like this? What crazy thing can they come up with.’ I responded with something like: ‘She’s 26 years old, what value is there, who cares.’ I intended the comment as a mockery of lawyers — I was imitating what a lawyer tasked with negotiating the case would be saying and being sarcastic to express that they shouldn’t be coming up with crazy arguments to minimize the payment,” he wrote in the statement. “I laughed at the ridiculousness of how these incidents are litigated and the ridiculousness of how I have watched these incidents play out as two parties bargain over a tragedy. At the time I believed the conversation was private and not being recorded.”

He said he knew the comment without context could be “interpreted as horrifying and crude” but said it “was not made with malice or a hard heart, quite the opposite.”

He also requested “rapid adjudication” of his case and said that he was willing “to accept any reasonable discipline our accountability partners and the Chief of Police wish to hand down.”

Auderer, Solan and the guild did not return NBC News’ repeated requests for comment this week.

Kandula’s family previously told NBC News, “We firmly believe that every human life is invaluable and not be belittled, especially during a tragic loss.”

In a statement Monday, the Seattle Police Department said it learned of the conversation from an employee who listened to it “in the routine course of business.” That employee was “concerned about the nature of statements” and took their concerns through their chain of command to the chief’s office.

The office of Chief Adrian Diaz referred the matter to the accountability office, as department policy and the city’s accountability ordinance require, the statement said.

The police department said the accountability office, which investigates police misconduct and recommends discipline to the police chief, is investigating “the context in which” the statements were made and whether any policies had been violated.

What complete and utter BS! Well, he's a white guy and seems to enjoy MAGA type behavior of targeting racial minorities, women, mentally ill and anyone who he seems to deem as not on his level.

Yeah, I was never going to give this cunt any benefit of doubt. It was clear what he was from that video and now that we see his history, we see the blue line at work.

He needs to die in a fire.
