Police are hunting for three suspects after an Irish fan at the Rugby World Cup was abducted and gang raped.
The shocking attack happened in Bordeaux late on Sunday night. The 37-year-old had attended the Ireland vs Romania game in the city the previous evening.
Local media reports said the three suspects, who are alleged to have abducted the woman from close to her accommodation, were Romanian. She was taken from outside her apartment building just before midnight on Sunday.
The woman told investigators she was then dragged to a side street where there is no CCTV and attacked. People in the area heard her screams and rushed to help her but the attackers managed to escape.
Reports in France last night said a group of Welsh fans were first on the scene and brought her to a local police station, but the victim was too traumatised to make a report. She then made her way back to her accommodation, where she collapsed.
Her friends called the police again and this time officers went to the apartment and found her on the floor. Cops called some of the four gardai who have been sent to France to act as liaison officers for the duration of the World Cup and with their assistance the woman made a formal allegation of gang rape.
Local police and prosecutors have now begun an investigation but the three attackers were still on the loose last night. Officers said all three were Caucasian and one was described as having an athletic build.
The woman was being treated in a Bordeaux sexual assault clinic. Gardai said they were aware of the incident but stressed it was being investigated by French police. Although there are four gardai in Bordeaux, none of them have powers there and they are there to liaise with local officers.
A Garda spokesperson said last night: ?Members of An Garda Siochana currently deployed in France for the duration of the Rugby World Cup tournament to assist Irish people visiting France are liaising with local authorities in relation to an alleged incident.
