Several killed in church shooting in Hamburg Germany

The shooting took place on Deelb?ge street in the Gross Borstel district. Local media identified the location as a Jehovah's Witness centre.

Police say a gunman is believed to be dead. It is unclear if the attacker is among six or seven fatalities reported by German media.

As yet, "there is no reliable information on the motive", police say.

A police spokesman said investigators had "indications that a perpetrator may have been in the building and may be even among the dead". "We have no indications of a perpetrator on the run," he said.

"The officers themselves also heard a shot coming from the upper floors of the building," the spokesman added. "They went upstairs and also found a body there."

An alert was sent on the federal warning app, NINAwarn, at around 21:00 (20:00 GMT) telling locals that "one or more unknown perpetrators shot at people in a church".

Residents nearby were told not to leave their homes amid the ongoing police operation.

Footage showed police escorting people out of the centre, some to ambulances.

Hamburg's Interior Minister, Andy Grote, said on Twitter that police special forces and a large number of officers had been deployed to the scene.

Police have appealed to the public not to share assumptions or to spread rumours.

People on Twitter are being super bigoted and claiming that it's Islam behind it. Memes saying "The religion of peace" etc. Because we all know that Christians have never murdered others and stole their land or anything. I don't know if people are jumping to conclusions or if there's anything to that rumor or not, but regardless, all religions are to blame for this kind of shit. They ALL have done it at one point or another except for maybe the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Hamburg police were tipped off about gunman, but did not take his weapon

Officers were told of concerns about mental health of man who went on to shoot dead four men, two women and an unborn baby

Police in Hamburg received an anonymous tipoff two months ago about the gunman who went on to kill seven people in a Jehovah’s Witness hall, but he had persuaded them not to take away his gun.

A letter was received in January raising concerns about the mental health of Philipp F, 35, and his purchase of ammunition, but officers found no reason for concern when they visited him last month.

He went on to shoot dead four men and two women aged 33 to 60 and an unborn baby during a rampage that started at 9pm on Thursday evening, that has also left eight injured, four seriously.

The gunman killed himself with his weapon as police officers sought to talk him into surrendering after chasing him up to the first story of the the three-story pebble-dashed building near Hamburg’s city centre.

“He is a former member of Jehovah’s Witnesses who left the community voluntarily about a year and a half ago, but apparently not on good terms,” said Thomas Radszuweit, Hamburg’s head of state security.

The suspect had a gun permit as a marksman and was in legal possession of a Heckler & Koch P30 gun.

He was visited in February after the anonymous letter was received that had suggested that the business consultant was suffering from mental ill health.

During a subsequent visit, Philipp F convinced the officers that there was no cause for concern.

Police chief Ralf Martin Meyer told a press conference that there had been no legal grounds to take away the man’s weapon.

Gawd. Well, those keyboard warriors can push away from their desks, as the murderer was a former member of the church and not Islamic. I hate how so many rush to conclusions immediately after shootings.

Well we all know that only Islamic people can be terrorists.

It's funny, because as a former member, my immediate assumption was that it would be a former member.

You can't leave that religion on any other terms BUT bad; they won't allow it. Leaving for any reason at all will result in the person being shunned.

That's a really big deal when your entire social support network is there, and in many instances, even your employer. If you are born into the religion, everyone you have ever been allowed to be close to is in the organization, so not only are you losing all of your friends and family, possibly your job, your home, etc., you are also being thrown out into a world that you have been fairly insulated from, a world where everyone and everything is evil, scary, and condemned.

Can't trust medical professionals, either, since they might be tools of the devil, so for many people, getting help is it's own stumbling block.

I can't tell you how many people end up attempting suicide after leaving. It's a lot. Some people can't deal with it.

Sounds like this guy was one of them.

So many religions are like this. I equate them to cult-like.

When you really take a look at it, ALL religions are cults. They have a cult like mentality of trying to gain more and more members, pay money to the church to keep it going, you have leaders of the church and most come with the message that everyone else is wrong and you are right. This is why I steer clear of ANY religious organizations no matter how much their beliefs fall in line with my own. I can do what they do just as easily on my own. Beliefs are so individual to each person, each person interprets it differently. It's dumb to think that you can have a "Hive Mind" on a belief system because no matter how hard you try, not everyone thinks the same.

If you want a sense of community? Help out with a Homeless Organization, Join an athletic team that plays games for fun, get a hobby and join a craft group, join a book club. There are SO MANY GROUPS out there that you really don't have to join a church for the community aspect of it. Just stay home and pray. We'd all be better off for it.
