    Queen Elizabeth II (96)

Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; 21 April 1926 ? 8 September 2022[1]) was Queen of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms.[a][b] Her reign of 70 years and seven months, which began on 6 February 1952, was the longest of any British monarch in history.

Elizabeth was born in Mayfair, London, as the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth). Her father acceded to the throne in 1936 upon the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, making Elizabeth the heir presumptive. She was educated privately at home and began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In November 1947, she married Philip Mountbatten, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, and their marriage lasted 73 years until his death in April 2021. They had four children together: Charles III; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

When her father died in February 1952, Elizabeth?then 25 years old?became queen regnant of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon (known today as Sri Lanka), as well as Head of the Commonwealth. Elizabeth reigned as a constitutional monarch through major political changes such as the Troubles in Northern Ireland, devolution in the United Kingdom, the decolonisation of Africa, and the United Kingdom's accession to the European Communities and withdrawal from the European Union. The number of her realms varied over time as territories have gained independence and some realms have become republics. Her many historic visits and meetings include state visits to China in 1986, Russia in 1994, the Republic of Ireland in 2011, and visits to or from five popes.

Significant events include Elizabeth's coronation in 1953 and the celebrations of her Silver, Golden, Diamond, and Platinum jubilees in 1977, 2002, 2012, and 2022, respectively. Elizabeth was the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch, the oldest and longest-serving incumbent head of state, and the second-longest verifiable reigning sovereign monarch in world history, only behind Louis XIV of France. She faced occasional republican sentiment and media criticism of her family, particularly after the breakdowns of her children's marriages, her annus horribilis in 1992, and the death of her former daughter-in-law Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997. However, support for the monarchy in the United Kingdom remained consistently high, as did her personal popularity. Elizabeth died on 8 September 2022.

Not a bit of it! America needs a real Royal Family, like the Brits. Don't get me wrong. I don't want Royals with any real power. They aren't suited for it. But wouldn't we all have been better off if Drump had been a king with no power to do anything, like appoint judges? He could have entertained the masses and left the actual governing to sane people. (I can't explain Boris Johnson. What were the Tories thinking!) We need to hire politicians for sensible reasons like banning guns and providing health care, not because he seems like a fun guy to have a beer with (W)

We spend more on sillier things. Like paying Brett Farve to not give speeches, and huge giveaways to billionaires. The royals are a tourist attraction and provide a whole lot of entertainment... I'm not entirely serious, but there are worse things, like the church...

Not a real fan of the Royal Family because of the history and colonization thing. Ireland REALLY isn't a huge fan of Liz as she pinned medals on soldiers that killed Irish citizens

However, I can't help but feel pity for her and some of the family. She never had a normal day in her life where she got to choose what she wanted to do. Never was allowed to pick her own hairstyle or clothes or eat junk food or smoke. I wouldn't ever want to live that way. Always in the public eye and having to keep up appearances and protocol. I think her acceptance to modern changes and supporting things that previous royals would never support kind of showed that she was a somewhat decent person deep down.

I never got the hype about the royal family, but the Queen aged very gracefully. I dont know a lot about her so there isnt much I can say, but she lived a full life and she loved those damn Corgi's.

Damn Im seeing a lot of people on Reddit celebrating her death.

Well, the Irish and Black people aren't very fond of the Royal Family. There's a horrible history there. Do you blame them? England is the main colonizer that created black slavery. They still have six Irish counties that don't belong to them and refuse to give them back. Natives from countless countries have a huge beef with them as well. I understand that she shouldn't take the brunt of what her ancestors did, but some of this stuff happened under her Dad and she herself so it's not like it's ancient history.

Certainly, the British Royal family (and really, all members of any ruling class) have massive black marks. But then again don't we all the Windsors are just notable because they've hung on to be the last clan standing? But that's part of the reason I love them. They have an amazing history, I spent a good half of the pandemic getting to know the Tudors. I can name all of Henry the VIII's wives and how he disposed of them! And actually, I'm quite in sympathy with the republican (in an anti-monarchy sense) point of view.

But I think for the most part QEII was an amazing woman who played the hand she was dealt brilliantly and who shouldn't be blamed for the sins of her forbearers.
I don't blame people for having mixed or negative feelings tho. We feel what we feel. Heck, I myself have a really unreasonable dislike for most "Influencers" even ones who haven't actually harmed me.

I remember when she fought so hard against the royal family paying taxes, after being funded off the backs of hard working Brits.

I think a very scaled down RF is needed. Just Charles (his wife), William/Kate, Sophie/Edward and Anne.

But that's the thing. Don't get me wrong, the history is fascinating and I've spent countless hours on the Tudors. The problem is that her hands are FAR from clean. She pinned medals on soldiers that killed Irish citizens to retain six counties that never belonged to them in the first place and this was in the 70s. This isn't ancient history. She spent millions in tax payer money to try to cover up that her Son was a pedophile. Those are HER actions, not the actions of ancestors. So just like Ronnie, it's hard to overlook the transgressions and hail her.

Yes, she was the product of an institution that is evil and it wasn't her choice to be born in to that, this is where I have a little bit of sympathy for her. However, she was NOT a good person in the sense that she still pulled off horrible shit to keep up appearances knowingly.

To be pitied? Yes. To be celebrated? Fuck no.

I don't pity her or feel sorry for her. No one was holding a gun to her head. She could have stepped away at any time. She chose to be in that glass house.

The Queen's corpse is being carted around everywhere. The media is definitely getting their mileage on her as well. It's bizarre to me that they prolong this crap for so long. I get that she's a monarch, but just have the funeral already.

Also, Puzz. I hope you don't feel bad about some of us not liking what she's done. Everyone has their own experience with who she was and you have every right to mourn her if that's what you're feeling. I felt bad about it after the last couple of days thinking that you thought we were somehow thinking less of you for having a different point of view on it. I assure you, that's not the case.

It's a raw issue for some. That might be why I came on strong about it. I can't express this on social media without offending people and nobody here is talking about it because they follow the whole "If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all" standard. This is the only place where I feel free to speak my mind on it. It wasn't directed at you personally

The most humiliating insult for Trump came from the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who allowed protesters to fly a giant orange balloon that depicted the president as a pouting fat baby in a diaper holding a cellphone in his tiny hands.

You know that he was jonesing for an invite, and only Biden and the First Lady were invited. I bet he's throwing a huge hissy fit!

Oh, and Sadiq Khan is awesome for so many reasons, but even more so for this! I am hoping he would be PM one day!

    I love John Oliver....

This covers the discussions we had about the Queen when she died and why some people aren't exactly excited about showing respect. Again, I'm not saying that people who want to honor her are wrong to do so, just that people who don't and are angry at the monarchy have good reason to as well. And yes, things that Elizabeth was directly involved with. It's a great video:

I saw this. Enjoyed it. And yeah every word makes sense... but guess what? I still really enjoy royal watching. Just like I'm fascinated by the Kennedy family (now there's a batch of dysfunction that really made good), the "Manson family", the Roosevelts, another bat-shit crazy crew. But I've got to say Queen Victoria's spawn do their thing with style. Got nothing on the Tudors of course, but still.

Henry VIII execuits people right left and center for no reason at all and poor Charles III, gets eggs tossed at him and can't even toss the mope in the tower.
