The video shows Smith went out to start her car at around 9:05, then returned inside, according to the sheriff's office.

At 9:18 she got briefly into a different car that was in the parking lot. Police said they questioned that driver and do not consider them a suspect.

After that Smith went back to the store, locked it up and turned on the alarm.

The video next showed Smith picking up a trash bag and walking out of the view of the camera. She has not been seen since. A co-worker found her car empty and still idling in the parking lot the next morning.

A state police K-9 unit tracked Smith?s scent for about 50 yards, from the dumpsters to Walnut Point Road.
Ahreal Smith?s sister, Lydia, pleaded for anyone with information to come forward.
Wow, sounds like she got snatched from the front of the store as she threw away the night's trash. He could have been hiding in the enclosure. Surely some of the cameras from the gas station picked up SOMETHING. I can't believe that whole area isn't covered. That's most likely how they had a suspect before they found poor Ahreal.

    Rest in peace...

The fact that someone is allowed to close up a store at night alone baffles me.

Right? I sure wouldn't do it. Big Nope.

EXACTLY! Like, all of the lessons we've learnt in the past 50 years are suddenly unlearnt!

What's next, encouraging children to accept rides from strangers in vans?

I agree and whenever I worked places like this, we always used the buddy system. Unfortunately with corporations cutting corners and staff, they're now left with this kind of situation happening again. I can only imagine that like everyplace right now, they're short staffed so she was left to close alone.

    So sad and preventable

Me either...and I noticed that it doesn't say kidnapping. So did she go with him willingly and then he killed her?

I wondered the same thing, and then thought that maybe the Virginia statute includes kidnapping as a circumstance to First Degree Murder, so I looked it up - and it does. Still, I would include the charge just in case the jury found him not guilty of the murder, but would at least find him guilty of kidnapping, kwim? Check it out:

What Is First-Degree Murder Under Virginia Law?

Under Virginia Code ? 18.2-32, first-degree murder is defined as murder other than capital murder. In addition, the murder must have been committed under one of these circumstances:

The killing was committed in specific ways stated in Virginia Code ? 18.2-32.

These include poison, lying in wait, imprisonment, or starvation.

The murder was committed in the commission of or the attempt to commit arson, rape, forcible sodomy, inanimate or animate object sexual penetration, robbery, burglary, or abduction.

The killing was willful, deliberate, and premeditated.
I always theorized he was hiding in the dumpster enclosure and surprised her. She wasn't expecting to go anywhere with anyone because remember, her car was running.

How did they find him so soon? There MUST have been video coverage from that gas station (they said the market cameras were inop). Maybe she DID know him, and the video shows her getting into his car on her own. She might have joined him for an after-work smoke before she went home, I've done that enough in my younger days. Shit goes wrong and people do screwed up things.

    I don't know.

That's scary. Stores should be responsible for stuff like this. They're more concerned about profits than they are about the lives of their employees.
