Katherine Janness (40) and her dog Bowie were stabbed to death in Atlanta's Piedmont Park

A woman and her dog were fatally stabbed while on a walk in Atlanta's Piedmont Park, and police are now asking for the public's help gathering more information.

Police say the body of Katherine Janness, 40, was discovered inside the park just after 1 a.m. on Wednesday. Her dog, Bowie, also was killed.

Police have not identified a suspect or a motive at this time.
Janness had dinner with her wife Tuesday night before saying she was going to walk the dog, a police source told CNN affiliate WSB-TV. Her wife later found Janness and the dog's bodies near the entrance of the park, the station reported.

"It's a gruesome scene," deputy police Chief Charles Hampton said, according to CNN affiliate WSB.
I don't know why, but I get a personal vibe on this one vs a random robbery or something like that.

I'm actually the opposite. Maybe it's because there have been a few cases like this lately, but if it were the wife I don't think she'd kill the dog too. I'm aware that doesn't mean she didn't do it, but my gut says that it was a stranger.

I'm not thinking the wife, but it's actually the dog that makes me think it was someone that knew her.

It could've been the dog was killed for trying to protect her and got in the killer's way.

This is what I'm thinking. There's been similar attacks. I'll try to find the links.

ETA: This is one that I was thinking of. It happened only about 10 miles from me:

I didn't know her, but we had a bunch of friends in common so this has been all over my Facebook. They had a vigil for her tonight. I used to Rollerblade at Piedmont Park practically daily when I lived in Atlanta and always felt safe there.

These kinds of deaths scare me. What was the motive?

It just seems like a wrong place at the wrong time situation type deal.

By personal I have wondered if maybe someone knew she was gay and she was killed because of that, not just a random robbery. I have not suspected the wife at all.

FBI Joins Investigation Into Killing of Katherine Janness, Her Dog in Atlanta Park

Janness was a bartender at a restaurant near Piedmont Park, according to her friends and family. A $10,000 reward is being offered by investigators for information related to her stabbing.
Investigators sought video from homes and businesses near the popular Piedmont Park as divers searched a pond in their quest to solve the stabbing death of Janness.

    No arrests have been made.

I could see it being a hate crime if someone knew she was gay. I'm still leaning towards random, as terrifying as that is.

This happened within site of my house. I live on the edge of the park and frequently walk all through it at 6 a.m. I feel so terrible for her wife, family and friends. There still doesn't appear to be any new information or possible suspects.

Autopsy report: Letters carved into body of woman stabbed to death at Piedmont Park

The 11-page document details "sharp force injuries" into Janness' face, neck, and torso, causing "injuries of major blood vessels and internal organs." Her death is being labeled as a homicide, according to the report. It also reveals she was stabbed more than 50 times.

The report also said that the letters "F," "A," and "T" were carved into Janness' chest. The 40-year-old was found stabbed to death with her dog in Piedmont Park back in August.

Her partner, Emma Clark, said she had come by her restaurant, Henry’s, while walking their dog, Bowie. APD said a camera near 10th and Piedmont captured her last moments as they walked across the Rainbow Crosswalk. It was the opposite direction of her home.

When she didn’t come home, her partner got worried and found her through the find my iPhone app.

Joe Clark, the father of Janness' partner, said he read the autopsy.

"What I found so heartbreaking and disturbing is to know what the final moments of her life was after reading that," he said. "It's undoubtedly a very angry, disturbed person. It's the only thing I can think of to do so much damage to someone."

"I don't see how one person could have inflicted that much damage on someone," he said after reading the report's details. He believes there could be more than one person responsible.

Joe Clark added that his daughter would likely not read the autopsy report, the details being too disturbing. He later explained how Emma Clark has been a focal point of online harassment in the months following Janness killing.

"Emma is the new victim," he added, detailing the ways in which his daughter's address had been posted online. He said her phone was also flooded with upsetting messages and there had been unfounded theories of her involvement in the case.

I still think this was a random attack by a psycho that saw an opportunity and took it.

The fact someone carved "FAT" makes me think it was personal. Other than that, seems random.

This had to be personal. The murder took time. Do random people carve words into their victims?

I lived right across the street from Piedmont Park in a townhouse on 10th street (I think it was 10th. The Mill was at the end of the street on the corner of Monroe.)

I thought the same thing until I saw she was stabbed 50 times and words were carved into her...that seems personal.

Wtf why are people bothering her wife? The poor woman has been through enough.

Unless it was a complete psycho. They'd do that too. Look at the Manson Family. "Fat" is a term that doesn't strike me as personal. I truly believe that this was just a random attack by someone really mentally ill. I think that if it was personal that they would have found some kind of lead by now. A random Schizophreniac could have been experiencing a delusion and she was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
