Authorities searching for an 18-year-old college student who went missing at Michigan State University last weekend said Monday his car remains where it was parked.

Brendan Santo had been visiting friends Friday at the East Lansing campus and was last seen leaving Yakeley Hall shortly before midnight, MSU Police and Public Safety said in a statement.

His vehicle appeared to be in the last spot where it was parked, according to the release.

"It is possible he intended to walk approximately a half mile" to the area near the Brody complex, MSU police said. "Brendan was last seen walking on campus and there is no indication he left the East Lansing area."

Santo attends Grand Valley State University and is from Rochester Hills.

Michigan State Police and the Ingham County Sheriff?s Office were helping search with specialized units, authorities said Monday. The effort included searches on foot, by helicopter, drone and boat.

Police blocked off part of a parking lot near the Red Cedar River on Monday. Diving equipment could be seen.

Investigators have also interviewed those who last had contact or spoke with the student. They reviewed surveillance cameras and checked cellular, smartphone and GPS data.

Santo is described as 5-foot-10, 160 pounds, last seen wearing gray sweatpants, a black T-shirt, a black baseball hat and white Converse high-top shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact MSU police detectives at (517) 388-6291 or TerrillJ@police.msu.edu.

‘We remain hopeful at this point’

The Michigan State Police marine division spent hours searching the Red Cedar River on Tuesday in East Lansings.

Brendan Santo, 18, has been missing since Friday night.

“We have no indication that he has left East Lansing,” said Chris Rozman, Michigan State University Police inspector.

There are posters now up all over the Michigan State University campus.

At this time MSU Police do not believe foul play was a factor, or that Santo harmed himself. Tip line: 844-99-MSUPD Email: tips@police.MSU.edu pic.twitter.com/gwbtOm4X3S

“We remain hopeful at this point, understanding that it has been three days since he’s been missing,” said Rozman.

Santo’s car was located where he last parked it. The teen was last seen walking toward the Brody neighborhood about a half mile from Yakeley Hall when he went missing.

“Typically when we work missing person cases like this they wander off or spend the night somewhere and it’s resolved quickly, so the fact that it’s been three days is not only out of the ordinary but concerning as well,” said Rozman.

Santo is a Grand Valley State University student originally from Rochester Hills.

“His family is very emotional during this process,” said Rozman. “Been here since Saturday, been in constant communication. MSU provided them with housing ... doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, students said it’s unnerving to know the teen disappeared on campus.

University police won’t say whether they recovered Santo’s phone, but are reviewing cellular, smartphone, and GPS data.

So do they think he got lost? Seems too soon to rule out foul play...

Foul play not suspected in missing case at MSU as probe focuses on river, police say

Foul play is not suspected in the disappearance of an 18-year-old at Michigan State University last weekend, and investigators are focusing on searching a river on campus, authorities said Thursday.

“The investigation has led us to focus on the Red Cedar River, which is in very close proximity to Brendan’s last known location. However, we continue to investigate other possibilities,” MSU Police said in a press release.

“We are continuing to use specialized resources from the Michigan State Police Marine Services Division, Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, and the Capital Area Dive Team for this intensive search of the water.”

Investigators have not yet recovered Brendan Santo's cell phone and records show no current activity, according to the release.

Meanwhile, the FBI is reviewing cellular, smartphone and GPS data along with the MSU Police Digital Forensics and Cyber Crime Unit as well as the Michigan State Police Technical Services Unit.

"We are confident that we have obtained the available information from his digital footprint," police said Thursday.

FBI joins search for Brendan Santo who went missing at MSU on rivalry game weekend

Investigators for the Federal Bureau of Investigation have joined Michigan State University Police and other agencies to continue searching East Lansing for 18-year-old Brendan Santo, the teen who disappeared while visiting friends at MSU on the rivalry game weekend of Oct. 29.
On Nov. 6, the Santo family asked MSU Police to share that they're offering a $5,000 reward to anyone with credible information that leads to bringing Brendan home. This reward will be managed through Crime Stoppers of Mid-Michigan through the existing MSU Police and Public Safety toll-free tip line and tip email, according to a press release issued by MSU police.

"At this point, foul play is not suspected in Brendan Santo’s disappearance, and we have received no other reports of missing persons. We also do not believe that Brendan intended to harm himself," police said in the release.

Authorities believe he was on foot when he disappeared; his car has been located, according to reporting by AP. And there is no indication Santo left the East Lansing area since his vehicle was found where he parked it.

The search has focused on the Red Cedar River, which flows through two miles of campus and is in close proximity to Santo's last known location, but police said they "continue to investigate other possibilities."

Police consider damming Red Cedar River in Brendan Santo search

Michigan State University police are considering damming the Red Cedar River to help them find Brendan Santo.

Santo, a Grand Valley State University student, was last seen at Yakeley Hall on October 29.

MSUPD has focused its search for Santo in the Red Cedar River from Beal Street to the west of campus.

It said debris is causing problems for dive teams looking for Santo.

Even if we do identify an area of interest through sonar and K-9s, sometimes it’s actually difficult to get a diver in that area in a safe manner,” said Chris Rozman, MSUPD spokesman.

The river is about five feet lower than when police started searching for Santo.

Ingham County Drain Commissioner Patrick Lindemann said if police were going to dam the river, now would be the time to do it. However, he said there are some things police need to consider.

“They have to be careful that they don’t ruin the banking or erode the banks,” said Lindemann.

MSU police recover body from river believed to be missing Brendan Santo

Michigan State University Police on Friday recovered a body they believe is 18-year-old Brendan Santo, who went missing in October during a visit to MSU's East Lansing campus.
Brendan Santo was last seen late Friday, Oct. 29.

Dive crews found the body in the Red Cedar River at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Lansing, about a mile and a half downriver of where Santo was last seen, university police said.

Police believe the body is Santo's but are still working to confirm identification, according to a statement by police.

MSU Police Inspector Chris Rozman told reporters Friday that the area of the river where the body was found — near the intersection of Kalamazoo and Clippert streets just east of US 127 — had been an "area of interest" for some time as police investigated Santo's disappearance.

A "significant log jam" exists in that area of the river that presented serious "entanglement hazards and debris" authorities had to navigate, Rozman said. The area, he said, is a “very complex and dangerous point of the river to search and it required a lot of resources to do that.”

On Friday, police got help from MSU arborists to cut a path to the river, where they deployed a boat to search for and eventually retrieve the body.

Friday's search included help from the Michigan State Police Marine Services, Capital Area Dive Team and Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Rozman said.

Police say the investigation into Santo's disappearance remains active, and officials still continue to look into circumstances and details. In a statement, the department stressed they still have no reason to believe Santo intended to harm himself or that foul play was involved in his disappearance.

What is it with college-age males drowning in rivers in the autumn/winter? I don't understand this. Are they peeing and falling in or something?
Who goes near a river at night in the winter? Especially in Michigan FFS. Gotta be cold down there.
You are talking to a woman who has laughed in the face of death, sneered at doom and chuckled at catastrophe.
