Mireille Knoll (85) stabbed to death by anti Semites in France, after surviving the Holocaust as a child

Mireille Knoll, 85, was killed Friday in her apartment, which was then set on fire, according to a French judicial official.

Two men have been jailed in the case, according to the official, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the news media. They were handed preliminary charges of robbery, damaging property, and murder with anti-Semitic motives, he said.

Francis Kalifat, president of the Jewish group CRIF, said Knoll was stabbed 11 times.

Knoll reportedly escaped a notorious World War II roundup of Paris Jews, in which police herded some 13,000 people ? including more than 4,000 children ? into a stadium and shipped them to the Auschwitz death camp in Nazi German-occupied Poland. Fewer than 100 survived.

Then aged 9, Knoll fled with her mother to Portugal, returning to France only after the end of the war.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo called on "all Parisians" to join a silent march Wednesday in memory of Knoll. Politicians across the political spectrum pledged to attend.

French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted that Knoll's death was a "horrific crime," and reaffirmed his "absolute determination to fight against anti-Semitism."

Two men suspected of murdering a Holocaust survivor in Paris during an alleged anti-Semitic attack will stand trial over her death, the Paris prosecutor's office told CNN on Monday.

Mireille Knoll was found dead in her Paris apartment in 2018. In an attack that outraged the country, the 85-year-old was stabbed 11 times and her home was set on fire.

The indictments on three charges were confirmed on July 10 by the Examining Magistrates, the prosecutor's office said.

The men are charged with "the murder of a vulnerable person committed because of the true or supposed victim's religion," as well as "aggravated theft" and "degradation by dangerous means to individuals," the office said.

One suspect was Knoll's neighbor, who was 27 at the time of the stabbing. He had previously been jailed for sexually assaulting the daughter of Knoll's domestic helper, a judicial source told CNN in 2018.

The second suspect was a homeless man, who was 21 at the time of the killing.

The pair maintain that they are innocent, AFP reports.

A third person has also been indicted in relation to the case, on a charge of "destroying a document or object relating to a crime or offense in order to prevent the truth from being established." That person is under judicial supervision, the prosecutor's office said.

    She escaped a Nazi roundup

"In this case, finally justice. And nothing else," William Goldnadel, Knoll family's lawyer, wrote on Twitter on Monday.

"We were waiting impatiently for such a reaction from the justice system in regards to the final indictment," Alain Knoll, the victim's son, told CNN affiliate BFMTV on Monday.
"We are very satisfied with the way things are going, with the fact that there will be a judgment, with the fact that the double aggravating circumstance of anti-Semitism has been retained."

According to lawmaker Meyer Habib, Knoll escaped the Vel' d'Hiv' Roundup in 1942, which was ordered by Nazi occupiers and resulted in the mass arrest of 13,000 French Jews.

Those detained were held at the Vel' d'Hiv cycling track in Paris before thousands were deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Poland.

French trial starts over brutal murder of Holocaust survivor Mireille Knoll

The partly burned body of Mireille Knoll, 85, was found in her apartment in central Paris after she had been stabbed 11 times before her home was set on fire.

President Emmanuel Macron attended the funeral of the Holocaust survivor who escaped a notorious 1942 roundup of more than 13,000 Jews in Paris by fleeing with her mother to Portugal when she was nine years old.

Two men have been charged with her killing, a 25-year-old homeless man with psychiatric problems and the 31-year-old son of one of Kroll's neighbours.

The pair, who met in prison and have past convictions for theft and violence, both deny killing the frail and immobile grandmother and each blames the other for her death.

"We will need a miracle for the truth to come out of their mouths," Gilles-William Goldnadel, a lawyer acting for Knoll's family, told reporters as he entered the court, adding that it was a case of "anti-Semitism motivated by financial gain."

Prosecutors are treating the murder as an anti-Semitic hate crime because one of the men said he had overheard the other "talking about Jews' money and their wealth" and that he shouted "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest") while stabbing her.

The investigation had also shown one of the suspects, named as Yacine Mihoub, had an "ambivalent" attitude towards Islamic extremism, prosecutors claim.

"They're monsters," Knoll's son, Daniel Knoll, told reporters on Tuesday. "We are expecting a very severe verdict."

Both Mihoub, 31, and co-accused Alex Carrimbacus, 25, were present in court or the trial which is due to last until November 10.

They should be stabbed and set on fire. After not spending time in a regular prison. No. Make them do their time inside of a concentration camp until the execution date.

What that poor woman had to endure.
