CASA GRANDE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- A mother in Casa Grande has died after police say the woman's 5-year-old son accidentally shot her with a handgun.

Casa Grande police found the mother, 38-year-old Michele Cox, with a single gunshot wound to her chest at The Colony Apartments near Peart Road and Florence Boulevard around 6:30 a.m. Friday morning. Cox was taken to the hospital, where she later died. Police said Cox's four children and 40-year-old boyfriend were home at the time of the shooting.

Police say investigators determined that Cox's 5-year-old son was responsible for the shooting. The handgun was found on the scene.

Police are reminding parents about gun safety. "This is a stark reminder that owning and safeguarding a firearm is a serious responsibility and should be a priority in anyone's home or business, especially if children are present," said police.

Casa Grande police say the case is currently ongoing.
