Okay, so I got it backwards. Doesn't make much sense unless she was sent ahead for help? This shit bugs me. Reminds me of Dyatlov Pass except modern day and less eyes missing.

Things have been WAY hotter lately, but not when they died. Although, heat stroke depends on how long they went, what time of the day and how much coverage and water they had so the heat index isn't a given factor.

But if she left them and went to get help, that tells me that likely they were all having a problem and she was the strongest to go ahead to look for help. If the baby were in trouble, she'd take the baby for sure. But if she were also in trouble, maybe leaving them behind together and going alone for help made more sense.

If he collapsed, surely she wouldn't leave the baby with him so he must have been somewhat coherent. Then you have the scenario that maybe she was naturally ahead of them and they all suffered something at the same time so there was no decision making involved. That would also make sense because she wasn't carrying the baby or tending to the dog so maybe ended up ahead of them on the trail in general and then "Boom". You're struck with something all at once. Just fucking bizarre.

Depending on what was going on with them, neither of the parents may have been thinking clearly.

It's like something out of a movie. I'm still leaning towards a poison.

I suppose the adults could have taken some sort of drug that killed them, and if the baby was still breast fed it might have killed her too... but that doesn't explain the dog. It's a mystery.

What I was thinking is that if both parents passed from something, the baby would have eventually died from exposure. The dog could have possibly refused to leave them and the same could have happened to him. I don't think we were going through a heat wave when they died, but it's still been pretty hot so without water or shelter heat stroke could have set in on both.

    That's possible.

Frankly, my dogs aren't that loyal. I suspect they'd feast on my body before they headed back down the trail. But yes the baby would have been helpless if both the parents went down.

Ok so it was heat stroke, toxic algae, or poison.

One of my dogs is definitely not that faithful, the other I'm not sure either way however I don't intend on testing their loyalty out

Trails and campgrounds near Yosemite where a family and their dog were found dead have been closed because of 'unknown hazards,' officials say

The Sierra National Forest said it closed the area where the family was found as a precaution due to "unknown hazards found in and around the Savage Lundy Trail."

"Designated recreation sites, roads, and trails in proximity and/or leading to this location will be off limits to public," the national forest said in a statement Saturday. The closures are effective until September 26.
Investigators have not yet determined what led to the mysterious deaths. Autopsies on the family and a necropsy on the dog were inconclusive while toxicology results remain pending. Some results could come as early as Wednesday, Kristie Mitchell, spokesperson for the sheriff's office, told CNN.
The only potential causes of death that have been ruled out include gunshots, or any other type of weapon, and chemical hazards specifically along the Savage Lundy Trail. Detectives have not ruled out possible toxins in areas near the trail.
Signs warning of a toxic algae bloom have been posted since mid-July along the south fork of the Merced River, in the vicinity of where the family was found. Water samples from the area -- along with samples of the drinking water the family packed -- have been sent to labs for testing.
Search warrants for the family's home and cars turned up no significant evidence. Their phones have been collected and are undergoing data extraction by the FBI.

Dang. Their autopsies were ALL "inconclusive"? This gets more and more bizarre. If it was heat stroke of some sort, I would think that the autopsy would show that. Crazy.

Very weird. Usually, I can make 1 solid guess but man, I'm stumped as to the obvious cause.
Toxins may cause liver damage but their livers were fine? No irritation of the eyes, nose, throat or lungs?

I think I read somewhere the husband was sitting upright when found? I thought that was odd.

It's Dyatlov Pass + The Somerton Man

Edit : I'm still leaning toward toxic algae on this. I think maybe the dog got in the water & splashed them or shook off on them.

I also wondered if they might've used filter bottles so they could purify water they collected on the hike instead of carrying heaps in with them - but it didn't get rid of all the algae

I was just looking at filter straws online for a trip of my own and noticed that lots of reviews talk about all the stuff they still let in....so this could be it. I imagine all 4 would drink the same water too.

Federal officials close river after mysterious deaths of California family and their dog

The mysterious deaths of a Northern California family of hikers and their dog have led federal officials to close 28 miles along the Merced River, where high levels of toxic algae were detected. The announcement comes just days after officials closed access to trails in the area due to "unknown hazards"

The Bureau of Land Management closed campgrounds and recreation areas along the river, between the towns of Briceburg and Bagby, Friday after receiving test results of water samples downstream from where the family died. Closure to the Merced River's recreation areas will stay in effect until Sept. 17.

Algal blooms can form in waterways that are shallow and warm.

"These algal blooms can produce toxins that can make people and pets extremely sick," Elizabeth Meyer-Shields, a BLM field manager, said in a statement. "We will continue to monitor for the algae's presence and look forward to when the public can safely recreate in the Merced River."
A cause of death has not been determined, and investigators are considering whether toxic algae blooms or other hazards may have contributed to the deaths.

Toxicology reports are still pending, and investigators have ruled out any weapons being used or dangerous gases from a mine along the trail.

Okay. It's looking like we're right about toxic algae. I have questions -
I am not a hiker, I would rather have a third root canal so I don't get some things....

    1. Why did they not have inflammation/irritation of the mouth and/or lungs?
    2. Why would they drink water that has toxins in it? Even filtered.
I see those warning signs, I'm a nope!
Why do hikers think toxins will be filtered out? It's not like it's just dirty water.
Why wouldn't they bring their own water?
