No one was happy about this meal.
Two McDonald's employees were arrested in Maine after one of them unintentionally dropped prescription drugs into a child's Happy Meal box, police said Wednesday.
The boy's mother found the four packets of Suboxone, which is used to treat opioid addiction, at the bottom of the box as she was looking for the toy that comes with the meal, authorities said. The shocking discovery happened after her son had eaten most of the meal, which they picked up from a McDonald's drive-thru in the city of Auburn on June 30.
Police were called to the store and began an 'extensive review' of the restaurant's video surveillance footage, leading cops to believe it was all an 'accident,' according to a news release.
The investigation determined that a 43-year-old employee identified as Michael Sevey had the medication in his shirt pocket while he was preparing meals for the drive-thru clients, police said. When he was preparing the woman's Happy Meal, he bent over to retrieve something from behind the counter and the drug fell from his pocket, landing in the sandwich box, according to the Auburn Police Department.
'The employee had no knowledge that the prescription was missing from the shirt until later in the shift, when the incident was brought to the store's attention,' the agency said in a statement.
But the investigation also showed that Sevey bought Suboxone illegally from another employee at the store earlier in his shift, authorities said.
The accused dealer, 29-year-old Mariah Grant, was charged with unlawful trafficking of prescription drugs. Sevey was charged with unlawful possession of prescription drugs.
No one has been charged with negligence in the case, but police said the investigation is ongoing and that McDonald's is cooperating with the probe. The company did not immediately return a request for comment Wednesday afternoon.
