An unhinged man sitting on top of his SUV with a beer can in hand fired a gun at an unoccupied police van outside a Bronx NYPD stationhouse early Thursday, sparking a tense stand off.

The man pulled up to Barkley and East Tremont Aves. in Schuylerville ' just a few steps from the stationhouse ' about 7:30 a.m. and stuck his head out of the silver SUV's sunroof 'holding a beer in one hand and a firearm in the other,' NYPD Captain Isaac Soberal, commanding officer of the 45th Precinct, said.

'Officers immediately gave commands to drop what he was holding,' Soberal said during a press conference outside the stationhouse. 'The man appeared somewhat disoriented and did not comply.'

Cops were ordered to clear the area as heavily armored Emergency Service Unit officers were dispatched.

When ESU officers arrived, the man, wearing a black T-shirt and black baseball cap, was still sitting on top of the SUV, refusing to hand over his weapon, NYPD Captain Christopher Giordano explained.

Standing behind a ballistic shield, police tried to convince the man to surrender.

After about 90 minutes, the man fired off a round, hitting the unoccupied van, Giordano said.

'The man appeared to be startled by the gun going off and laid on the roof of the SUV,' Giordano said.

When the man dropped the gun through the sunroof into the SUV, ESU cops grabbed him and pulled him off the SUV.

He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center for observation. Charges against him were pending Thursday.

When he was taken into custody, he was crying, NYPD Special Operations Chief Harry Wedin said.

'Today's a very good day,' Wedin said. 'There was a tense situation this morning involving an individual armed with a gun experiencing some kind of personal crisis and as we stand here now, that individual has been taken into custody without incident.'

Cops swept the SUV for explosives but nothing was discovered, officials said.
