Summer Wells (5) missing from Rogersville, TN since 6/15/2021

The father of 5-year-old Summer Wells, who has been missing since Tuesday, told the Times News on Friday he believes his daughter was abducted.

Donald Wesley Wells spoke to the Times News about the circumstances surrounding his daughter?s disappearance and what has been happening to him; his wife, Candus; and their three sons since Summer went missing.

Summer was last seen Tuesday evening at her home on Ben Hill Road in the Beech Creek community in south central Hawkins County.

Since that time there has been a massive search effort covering hundreds of acres surrounding the Wells residence. There has also been an ongoing investigation by the Hawkins County Sheriff?s Office, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Wells spoke about what happened Tuesday evening.

Donald Wells: ?I was at work, but from what my wife has told me, her, and her mother, and Summer were planting flowers by her grandma?s trailer, which is about 20 feet from the house. Real close to the house. Summer, all of a sudden, said ?Mom I want to go in the house.? So she said, fine.?

Her three brothers were inside watching TV, and Candus watched Summer go in the door. Her brothers said she was going to go downstairs and play with her toys.

Donald Wells: ?Her mom came in and said where?s Summer? She?s downstairs playing with her toys. She (Candus) hollered for her, and there was no answer. She went downstairs and (Summer) was nowhere to be found. She went out the basement door. The door was unlocked.?

Summer has never left the area, and Wells said he doesn?t believe she would leave.

Donald Wells: ?She might be on the other side of the house. I went out there before and called for her. She came out from behind the house. She just has to be outside. She?s an outside type of person. She was gone, buddy.?

He said his wife called him at work in Jonesborough and he told her to hang up and call 911, and he immediately headed for home.

He arrived before law enforcement, but many of his neighbors were already searching the area around his home on Ben Hill Road.

Donald Wells: ?I was freaking out, and when I got home I drove up to the property, and all my neighbors were combing the woods for her. I realized then and there that she was not there. I knew right then and there that she was gone. She would never leave there on her own. Somebody had taken her.?

Searchers on the side of Beech Creek Road right at the Sullivan County line about a mile from the Ben Hill Road intersection. On Friday the search continued for 5-year-old Summer Wells who was last seen at her home on Ben Hill Road Tuesday evening.

Mr. Wells said it is his belief that Summer was abducted and taken out of the area.

Donald Wells: ?She would never leave. For one thing, we?ve got bears, and wild dogs, and we?ve got druggies who come around to other people?s houses all hours of the night. But this was like 5:30 in the evening, which makes me think someone was laying in wait. I heard somebody say that people track kids down on Facebook and find them. All I know is she is definitely not anywhere around there. Somebody has abducted her and took her out of the area.?

Mr. Wells said law enforcement has done a good job pursuing every lead, and he willingly took a lie detector test to assist in the investigation. He said he and his wife have been looking at photos of potential suspects.

Donald Wells: ?They have tracked down all kinds of people. They even had me in there with a lie detector test. It didn?t bother me to do that whatsoever. A lot of time the parents are responsible.?

The Wells family are members of the Kingsport Seventh Day Adventist Church in Kingsport. Wells said they love their church family and Summer especially has many friends at church.

?They just love her to death,? he said.

Wells is originally from Utah, and he met his wife in Arkansas, where their oldest son was born. Candus Wells is from Wisconsin, and she had a sister who went missing there several years ago and was never found, Wells said, although he doesn?t know much about that incident.

The Wells family moved to their Ben Hill Road residence 13 years ago to take care of his mother, who has since passed away. They inherited her house and have lived there ever since. Summer and the two youngest boys were born here.

KTN: What have you been doing during the search?

The wells children at church holding a Bible, including Summer who has been missing since Tuesday.

Donald Wells: ?Just trying to cope with everything. I?m talking to the police. I can?t be alone for some reason. If I have to I?ll go down there and talk to the police because I can?t be alone now.?

KTN: How are Summer?s brothers doing?Donald Wells: ?They?re coping with it better than me and their mother are. I don?t understand that. When they really think about it they?re upset. But they?re coping with it way better. The most I?ve done is watch the news a little bit. I can?t focus on anything.?

    KTN:
Do you have hope that this will end well?

Donald Wells: ?I have hope, but when you look at the statistics. Through our church and other churches, worldwide prayer is going on for her. Plus all the law enforcement agents are praying. We?re just hoping that God will turn it around somehow, some miraculous way.?

Officials ‘more concerned than ever’ to find missing 5-year-old Summer Wells

Five-year-old Summer Wells remains missing and officials say they are “more concerned than ever to find her.”

In an update Monday, officials said that the search continues for the child who was reported missing last Tuesday evening.

“We will not quit until we find Summer Wells,” said Capt. Tim Coup, who is overseeing ground search efforts.

Authorities are also calling on property owners in the area to check any places on their property where a child might hide. That

“I want to the word to get out to all the residents in the upper Beech Creek community, Hawkins County, and Sullivan County…we need the residents to go back today, tonight, tomorrow, as soon as possible and check their entire property — any outbuildings, any barns, any place a child could hide,” Hawkins County Sheriff Ronnie Lawson said. “We desperately need you to do that for us. It’s easier for you to check your own property than it is to send officers there.”

The search effort has now involved 72 agencies and ground crews have covered around 2,400 acres so far.

As of Monday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has received 150 tips in the search for Summer Wells, a 5-year-old girl from Rogersville who was first reported missing on Tuesday, June 15. A statewide Amber Alert was issued on Wednesday, June 16.

“Summer is still missing and we are more concerned than ever to find her,” TBI Public Information Officer Leslie Earhart said.

Mother of missing 5-year-old Summer Wells filed protective order against husband last year

The mother of Summer Wells, the Tennessee 5-year-old who has been missing for a week now, filed for a protective order against her husband Donald Wells last year, stating in court documents that she was “afraid for my children and myself.”

Tuesday marked one week since the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued an Endangered Child Alert for Summer, upgrading that the next day to an AMBER Alert.

She was last seen June 15, walking near her home in the Beech Creek community of Hawkins County.

An arrest warrant obtained Tuesday morning by our sister station WKRN states a Hawkins County deputy had responded Oct. 14, 2020 to the home where Donald Wells lived with his wife and four children, including Summer, for a report of a domestic assault.

As the deputy arrived, he said he saw a man, later identified as Wells, behind the wheel of a white GMC Sonoma that was driving away.

The deputy said he spoke with Wells’ wife, who explained her husband came home drunk and accused her of having an affair. At one point, Wells pushed his wife down, injuring her knee, then punched himself in the face multiple times and left the residence, according to the warrant.

The report states the GMC Sonoma pulled back into the driveway and the deputy could hear Wells’ family members “fear for his return.” One person reportedly stated that there was a firearm in the GMC.

The Hawkins County deputy stopped Wells in the driveway and said he smelled strongly of alcohol and was stumbling. Wells, a felon out of Utah, told the deputy there was a black pistol in his glovebox and that he “had some to drink tonight,” according to the warrant.

Wells was arrested and booked into the Hawkins County jail on multiple charges, including domestic assault, possession of a handgun while under the influence and unlawful possession of a weapon.

The Hawkins County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office confirmed Wells pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of a handgun while under the influence, but added the domestic assault and unlawful possession of a weapon charges were dropped in April.

In an emergency protective order filed on Oct. 15, 2020, Summer’s mother wrote of Wells, “He drinks and throws things, am afraid of being hurt. He is abusive [physically] and [mentally toward] me. I am afraid for my children and myself.”

She went on to write that her mother stayed in a camper on the property and feared Wells would hurt her as well.

In the filing, Summer’s mother asked for temporary custody of all four of the couple’s children, as well as for Wells to “move out immediately.”

Court documents show Summer’s mother chose to dismiss the petition four days later on Oct. 19.

This is why my chosen superpower would be time travel. To go back to the moments before people went missing, to solve a mystery that has plagued a family for decades, that would be like, the best thing ever.

And I hate this. She's five. FIVE.

I hope that she's found safe, and ASAP.

There are no suspects, no leads...this case will go cold.

I'm afraid they're never going to find anything concerning this kid. It doesn't seem like the investigation is going anywhere.

Tennessee parents' sons in state custody after disappearance of daughter Summer Wells

The parents of missing Tennessee 5-year-old Summer Wells attended juvenile court this week after their three sons were placed in the custody of that state's Department of Child Protective Services, according to local reports.

The sons of Don Wells and Candus Bly have been in CPS custody since last week, their mother told the Johnson City-based WJHL-TV at the courthouse, confirming statements her husband made on a podcast over the weekend.

She told the station that the boys were removed for reasons unrelated to Summer’s disappearance, and Wells suggested that they were now "safer."

Missing 5-year-old Summer Wells: Reward reaches $58,000

Wells' parents, Donald Wells and Candus Bly, have said they believe their daughter was abducted. A search effort in the area surrounding their home turned up nothing.

The couple's other three boys have been removed from their home and placed in the custody of the Tennessee Department of Child Protective Services.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is also looking for a maroon Toyota pickup truck with a full bed ladder rack and white buckets in the truck bed. The TBI received a tip in June from a source who saw the vehicle in the Beech Creek community near Ben Hill Road in the vicinity of the Wells' home in the late afternoon of June 14 or 15.

The TBI is asking anyone with information about Wells’ whereabouts to call 1-800-TBI-FIND or contact the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office at 423-272-7121.
