Veteran actress Lisa Banes, best known for her roles in the movie hits “Cocktail” and “Gone Girl,” died Monday from head injuries suffered 10 days earlier when struck by a hit-and-run scooter on the Upper West Side, police said.
Banes, 65, passed away at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital, where she was rushed on June 4 after the scooter mowed her down as she crossed with the light at Amsterdam Ave. and W. 64th St. near Lincoln Center. Police are still hunting the fugitive scooter driver in the now-fatal crash.
The driver, heading north on Amsterdam, ran the red light and sped off after slamming into Banes with such force that she was knocked out of the crosswalk, police and witnesses said.
“I am deeply saddened at the news of Lisa Banes’ passing,” actor Seth MacFarlane, creator of “Family Guy,’ tweeted. “We had the good fortune to work with her on ‘The Orville’ this past year. Her stage presence, magnetism, skill and talent were matched only by her unwavering kindness and graciousness toward all of us. A tremendous loss.”
Paul Rudnick, the award-winning novelist, playwright, and screenwriter, offered his condolences Tuesday as news of Banes’ death spread.
“RIP Lisa Banes, a superb actress and much beloved, especially by the theater community,” he tweeted. “I only knew Lisa a bit, but I treasured her performances and her elegant, generous style.”
Shortly after the collision, Banes’ wife, Kathryn Kranhold, asked supporters “to pray for Lisa” and to call police if they knew anything about the scooter rider.
Banes was on her way to meet friends for dinner when she was struck. She had intended to first stop by her alma mater, the Juilliard School, as well as Lincoln Center, Kranhold said.

“Just busted,” singer-songwriter Jill Sobule tweeted Tuesday. “Lisa Banes was magnificent, hilarious, and big-hearted — always helped me though the hard times. She was so beloved by so many.”
Banes lived in Los Angeles but was in Manhattan to perform in “The Nineties,” a two-woman show being streamlined by the Manhattan Theater Club.
She was Tom Cruise’s romantic interest in 1988′s “Cocktail” and played the mother of a missing woman in 2014′s “Gone Girl.”
Her television credits included had roles on shows including “Nashville,” China Beach” and “One Life to Live.”
