1 person reported killed in shooting.

A male juvenile was killed and a police officer wounded Monday afternoon in a shooting at Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville, police and sources say.

The Knoxville Police Department confirmed the fatality in an emailed statement, and the shooting without details on its Twitter account. A medical examiner's vehicle left the school about 5 p.m.

The source said the wounded police officer is the Austin-East school resource officer. He was shot in the hip and is undergoing surgery, the source told Knox News.

The source also said one person has been detained.

Knox County Schools Superintendent Bob Thomas tweeted the school has been secured.

Neither police nor school officials have taken questions from reporters, or confirmed the number of people shot or their conditions.

Police and emergency workers flooded the neighborhood around 3 p.m., and have blocked off access to the school and parts of the neighborhood.

Knox County Schools has established a reunification site for parents to connect with their children who attend the school. It is at the baseball field behind the school near Wilson Avenue and Hembree Street.

Knoxville shootings have shaken the Austin-East High School community
In recent months, the shooting deaths of four Knoxville teens have become the rallying cry for community members pushing for an end to gun violence.

Justin Taylor, a 15-year-old Austin-East student, died Jan. 27 after police say a 17-year-old boy accidentally shot him while they both were inside a car. Investigators quickly arrested the 17-year-old on a charge of criminally negligent homicide.

Another teenager, 16-year-old Stanley Freeman Jr., was fatally shot on Tarleton Avenue while driving home from school on Feb. 12. Two teenage boys, ages 14 and 16, have been charged with fatally shooting him.

Austin-East students lost to violence:A timeline of the four Knoxville teenagers who have been lost to gun violence in 2021

Shooting deaths:Knoxville police say they have no new information to share in teens' deaths

Janaria Muhammad, a 15-year-old freshman at Austin-East, was found shot outside the home where she lived on Selma Avenue, on Feb. 16.

Jamarion "Lil Dada" Gillette, 15, died after being shot March 9. A woman found him wounded on Cherokee Trail in South Knoxville, near the University of Tennessee Medical Center, and took the teen to that hospital. He died there early on March 10.

Authorities have not announced any arrests, publicly identified any suspects or disclosed any possible motives in the shootings of Muhammad and Gillette. Police previously said they had no evidence to suggest the shootings of Muhammad, Gillette, Freeman and Taylor were related.

In the emotional weeks after the deaths, the Knoxville City Council approved $1 million budget to help fund the city's efforts of violence prevention. A first contract, with Cities United, was approved last week. Many applauded the first steps but say much more is needed to combat systemic issues like poverty and unequal education and economic opportunities.

    Fuck prayer, goddamnit.

    Do something.

Get off your fat ass and go give blood or something. Make yourself useful to others, including *(and I know this is foreign to many of you) people you don't know.

These school shootings aren't the result of anything other than kids having access to firearms and a serious lack of regard for human life. And I don't give a fuck who you are, if you don't teach your children

respect for others, then your child is going to end up the next Dylan and Eric.

And your face is going to be on the cover of People magazine as the parent who wasn't smart enough, caring enough, parent enough to ensure that your children learned the difference between right and

    wrong.
Don't like what I have to say? I respect that. Go fuck yourself.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – An Austin-East student is dead and a Knoxville Police officer is in recovering at the hospital following an officer-involved shooting at the high school Monday afternoon.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Knoxville Police Department provided updates on the shooting at Austin-East Magnet High School late Monday in a joint press conference.

MORE: TBI says student opened fire on officers inside Austin-East bathroom
TBI reports preliminary information indicates that at approximately 3:15 p.m., the Knoxville Police Department received a report of an individual possibly armed with a gun at Austin-East Magnet High School. Upon arrival, officers located the individual inside a school restroom.

They ordered him out, but he refused to comply. As officers entered the restroom, the subject reportedly fired shots, striking an officer. One officer returned fire.

The subject was pronounced dead at the scene and has since been identified as a student. KPD Officer Adam Willson, a 20-year veteran of the department who currently serves as the School Resource Officer at Austin-East, was shot and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon said officer Willson was, “conscious and in good spirits” when she visited him at UT Medical Center late Monday.

At this time, the investigation remains active and ongoing, as TBI Agents continue to gather any and all relevant evidence, interviews, and information. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for her further review and consideration.

The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and, instead, refer questions of that nature to their respective department to answer as it sees fit.

Police have not identified the deceased, nor specified an age.

KPD says, “There are no other known gunshot victims.”

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will lead the investigation moving forward.

Also, the ATF will be working with KPD as well as focusing on the tracing of firearms and the recovery of shell cases which will be entered into NIBIN to see if there are any connections to previous shootings.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Knoxville Police Department held a press conference Monday night following the fatal shooting that occurred at Austin-East Magnet High School.

During the press conference, the TBI identified the deceased gunshot victim as an Austin-East Magnet High School student.

TIMELINE: Austin-East community rocked by another shooting
According to the TBI’s preliminary investigation, around 3:15 p.m. Knoxville Police received a call for an individual possibly armed with a gun at Austin-East inside a school restroom. They ordered him out, but he refused to comply. As officers entered the restroom, the subject — identified as an Austin-East student, reportedly fired shots, striking an officer.

One officer returned fire. The student was pronounced dead at the scene.

KPD confirmed Officer Adam Willson, a 20-year veteran of the department who currently serves as the School Resource Officer at Austin-East, is recovering after undergoing surgery at UT Medical Center for a gunshot wound sustained while responding to the incident.

Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon said the officer was, “conscious and in good spirits” when she visited him at UT Medical Center late Monday.

Community sends ‘thoughts and prayers’ to Austin-East students, staff
“It was just very chilling, first of all, to hear we have an officer down, and secondly that it was at a school. It’s just, it’s a sad day for the Knoxville community, and our police department,” Chief Thomas said.

TBI Director David Rausch said that the agency’s investigation is in the early stages and also made a distinction between “school shooting” and shooting in the school:

“We have to be careful with our language… This wasn’t a school shooting. This was an officer-involved shooting inside a school.” Rausch said.

The TBI will continue to gather evidence as the investigation remains ongoing.

The TBI is the lead agency on the investigation. The Knoxville Police Department initially responded to the scene.

Okay, this is confusing. Are they saying that the student wasn't armed at all? Or was he and just didn't shoot the gun? If the student did have a gun, I wonder if it was even brandished. Could it be that someone told the officers that he had a gun and they went in there to confront him about it then went all "Keystone Kops" shooting the kid and themselves in the process?

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Police Department has released the names of the officers involved in the incident reported inside of Austin-East Magnet High School Monday afternoon.

According to KPD, the officers were identified as:

    Officer Adam Willson
    Lieutenant Stanley Cash
    Officer Jonathon Clabough

KPD also mentioned that Lieutenant Cash has been with KPD since October 2001 and that Clabough has been with KPD since February 2017.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knox County District Attorney General Charme Allen promises that the public will see the police body camera footage of a shooting that killed a student in a Knoxville high school, but only after the criminal investigation is complete.

17-year-old Anthony Thompson Jr. died in Monday's shooting inside a bathroom at Austin-East Magnet High School. He was the fifth student from Austin-East to die in gun violence so far this year, but it was the first shooting to take place on school property.

The TBI said Thompson had a handgun when Knoxville Police Department officers located him around 3:15 p.m. Monday afternoon and a struggle ensued. Investigators said Thompson's gun fired first, but it's unclear right now whether the teenager pulled the trigger or if it was an accidental discharge.

TBI said two responding KPD officers fired back. Those officers' names have been released, but we do not know which officers fired their weapons.

Preliminary evidence indicates the bullet from Thompson's gun did not hit KPD school resource officer Adam Willson, who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, according to TBI.

Okay, so do I think it was wrong for the kid to have a gun at school? Of course! But they made this seem like he was a school shooter or something when it seems to be more a case of cops going after him for having possession of a gun and not necessarily aiming it at anyone. Did he even brandish the weapon? If not, this easily could have been handled by taking custody of him and not killing him then shooting themselves as well. I'm thinking that they escalated this themselves.

If this turns out to be the case , then these have to be the dumbest fucking cops since the asshole in Va. who pulled a gun on the Army officer.

Stupid fuckers be escalating shit for no good goddamn reason, and that's just fucking dumb when you're talking about firearms and (the police department officer's inability to utilize them in a safe and appropriate manner.

But that's just the thing. I've know officers who've gone their entire careers never drawing their weapons, and I live in and next to a hella large metro area, and I know that there are cops out there who have neither the intellect or the training to do what needs to be done without the introduction of a firearm into the scenario.

And since solving problems without firing any shots is the way it SHOULD BE HANDLED, I'm at a loss as to why these badged dipshits find it so acceptable to use their weapons so often?

The rest of the USA never enforced the Christopher Commission or never even have a Christopher Commission to begin with? Sure initially Christopher Commission was originally meant to call on the LAPD and other California Law enforcement agencies to have reforms 3 decades ago but with 50/50 results.

Fun fact: When I was a freshman in high school (2003-04 ish?) the football team played against Austin East and AE was disqualified from the season due to having a 22 year old on the team. I was in band and this was my very first football game we played at.

This isn't a gun problem. I know because when I went to high school all of us had multiple guns, many of which hanging in the back window of our trucks in the school parking lot.

Not a single school shooting ever.

A police officer who shot and killed a high school student in Knoxville, Tennessee, last Monday will not be charged, prosecutors said.

Knox County District Attorney Charme Allen said Officer Jonathon Clabough was justified and acting in self-defense when he fatally shot Anthony Thompson Jr., 17, at Austin-Magnet High School on April 12. During a Wednesday press conference, Allen released surveillance and body-camera footage showing Clabough firing two shots, killing Thompson and injuring another officer, Adam Willson, in the leg.

Four officers responded to a call of domestic abuse involving Thompson's former girlfriend at the high school, according to NBC affiliate WBIR. Officers Clabough, Willson and two others can be seen in the body-camera footage entering the school's bathroom. They located Thompson inside a stall and asked him to show his hands, according to the video.

The footage shows the officers trying to handcuff Thompson, who can be heard repeatedly saying, "My bad, my bad." One officer grabs Thompson's left hand, while his right hand remains in the front pocket of his hoodie, according to the video. Clabough said in a statement he could see the barrel of a gun pointing at him from inside the pocket.

A single shot fired from the gun hit a trash can but none of the officers, Allen said. It was unclear if the handgun fired accidentally.

After the first shot, Thompson can be heard repeatedly saying, "Wait, wait, wait."

Clabough quickly draws his weapon and shoots Thompson in the upper chest, video shows. According to Allen, Clabough said in his statement that he saw Thompson fire the gun and believed one of his colleagues was shot when he stepped back.

Video shows Clabough firing a second shot as Thompson falls to the ground, hitting Willson in the leg. An officer then handcuffs another student in the bathroom who can be heard pleading for authorities to help Thompson after he said he could see blood coming from his body, the footage shows.

"Help him! Please help him! Please, please," the student says, according to the video.

The officers called the school nurse for medical assistance after they saw large amounts of blood when Thompson was handcuffed and turned over, according to the DA. Allen said the medical examiner said there was "no way he could have recovered from this particular injury no matter what aid was rendered."

Knoxville Police Chief Eve Thomas said in a statement on Wednesday that she was grateful investigators determined that the officers were "cleared of any wrongdoing."

"With that being said, this was an incredibly tragic and traumatic experience for everyone involved," she said.

Conflicting reports from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation fueled protesters and elected officials like Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon to demand authorities release video of the deadly shooting.

Allen initially said she would not share the footage because of the ongoing investigation, but relented after determining she would not pursue charges against Clabough or the other three responding officers.

Kincannon said in series of tweets on Wednesday that she was "relieved" body-camera footage was released by authorities.

"While this is a critical step and essential to accountability and transparency in our City, this is still a sad day," she tweeted. "My heart is heavy knowing how quickly an effort to prevent harm can end in tragedy. Watching the video, my heart breaks again for Anthony. His life matters, and he is gone too soon."

Efforts to reach Thompson's family by phone Friday were unsuccessful.

Thompson is the fifth current or former student at the high school who was killed in gunfire this year, WBIR reported. None of the four other students were shot inside the school.
