Italian Riviera clifftop cemetery collapses into the Ligurian Sea

An operation is underway to recover the coffins, 11 of which have been pulled from the sea.

Part of a cemetery in the Italian Riviera has collapsed into the sea, sending 200 coffins down a cliff.

    Key points:

Operations are still underway to recover the coffins
The cemetery stands on a cliff 70 metres above sea level
There had been concerns over its safety before the landslide
Residents were shocked at the sight of the coffins, possibly containing their loved ones, floating in the Ligurian Sea near the village of Camogli.

Eleven caskets were pulled out of the water on Tuesday afternoon local time.

Only five of them were identified.

Operations were still underway but may take time as experts warned parts of the cliff surrounding the landslide were still unstable.

The cemetery stands on a cliff 70 metres above sea level.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the cliff collapse.(AP)
There had been concerns over its safety before the landslide and works to stabilise the cliff were underway.

The cemetery was closed to the public and no injuries were reported.

It was believed the collapse happened due to the erosion of the underlying cliff, made more serious by severe coastal storms that had hit the area over the last few years.

The local prosecutor's office opened an investigation into the cause of the collapse.

    No one has been charged.

Cemetary collapses kind of became a weird interest of mine when I was a kid. I blame it on this episode of Quincy M.E which had me imagining how it'd be to go down the creek looking for tadpoles & discover an occupied coffin instead

Never did end up finding one

Edit : lol, I just watched that intro all the way through & now I'm wondering if Quincy was my orig introduction to anti-capitalism

Holy shit! I feel really awful for the folks that have to clean that up.

This is another reason why cremation is a really good idea.

I'd like to have my body taken out into the woods and be re-used by nature, not in some arrogant way like placed in a tree but rather eaten by animals and insects who are just trying to survive.
