Trucker (22) dies in accident on the 401

    Kitchener trucker killed on 401

"Ontario's police watchdog is investigating a crash on Highway 401 near Dutton yesterday morning that killed a 22-year-old Kitchener trucker.

The unidentified trucker died after the rig he was driving slammed into the back of another tractor-trailer.
The crash closed the eastbound lanes of the highway for more than eight hours as OPP re-routed traffic onto Currie Road.

The collision happened about 9:30 a.m., said Elgin OPP Const. Michelle Smith.
Elgin OPP officers were escorting a truck towing another tractor-trailer from an earlier crash. In that crash, a tractor-trailer rolled into a ditch on the 401 near Currie Road about 4 a.m.

Police decided it was too dangerous to move the rolled vehicle and called in a tow truck, said Rose Bliss, spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit.

A marked cruiser with its lights and sirens activated was leading the tow truck. Another marked cruiser followed the tow truck and tractor-trailer.

They were on the south shoulder of the eastbound lanes of the highway when the 22-year-old's tractor-trailer passed the convoy and slammed into the back of another truck, Bliss said." - The London Free Press

Ok so a trucker dying in an accident on the highway probably isn't one of the most uncommon deaths people read about, but I thought I would start a topic on it because I work in the office of the trucking company he worked for. He owned his own truck and I actually processed all of his paperwork and figured out how much he got paid for loads. I talked to him on the phone a few days before this happened. Our trucks getting in accidents isn't THAT uncommon, but this is the first death we've had and everyone is pretty upset about it. Oh and on top of the fact that he was only 22, he was supposed to get married next weekend. :(

    wow rip trucker man

my stepdad is an owner operator so i worry about him all the time.  he has been doing it for almost 20 years and only one accident that wasn't his fault and no injuries, knock on wood!  last week a truck hauling groceries crashed and exploded about a mile from my work, it was a rad site.  but no deaths just a few injuries....

Yeah we've had some pretty bad accidents, one just a few months ago where a truck infront of our driver flipped over cause the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel and our truck couldn't stop and slammed into it, but he walked away with minor injuries compared to what the truck looked like. Usually the end up just walking away from the accident ok, so this is just so sad.

wow jill, sorry for your loss.  I too work in the trucking industry.  I'm an agent for a national flatbed trucking company.  I have 18 owner operators that run for me and I can't imagine how having one of them killed in an accident like that would be.  Some of the drivers are like family to us.  What a sad story and how completely awful for his fiance.  I hope you will extend my deepest condolences to everyone in your office.

Thanks guys. I have his paperwork on my desk right now and I don't even want to look at it. I had to order the flowers for the funeral home today, it's a job I really wasn't looking forward to doing. I can't imagine what it would be like to be planning a wedding one minute and planning a funeral the next. It's really made me realize how quickly these things can happen and flip your world upside down.

The way the accident occurred it almost appears that he could have fallen asleep maybe?

    RIP

Yeah we thought that maybe too, but apparently he was trying to pass around the police convoy and swerved and hit the back of another tractor. I've heard some chatting around the office about how something had to have happened for him to do that. He was a good driver, maybe the investigation will turn up something.

Bell Cartage in Kitchener. And I know what you mean about all of the accidents. Just after it happened I was searching Google news for anything about the accident and it came up with a bunch that had happened that week. It seems like everyday lately there's another big one.

my dad wouldn't have worked with him then...i just googled the 401 in news too, looks like there was ANOTHER serious accident earlier that closed off the highway...people seriously need to be more careful, this is why my mom's always afraid to let me go to toronto or london or anything like that... :(
