Major Terror Attack In London Foiled

    Updated: 08:29, Friday June 29, 2007
A "massive" explosive device found in a car in central London has been defused, Sky sources say.
It is believed that a major terrorist attack in the heart of the capital has been thwarted.
Police were called to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in The Haymarket area shortly before 2am this morning.

The area was cordoned off by police who examined the car.

They discovered what appeared to be a potentially explosive device, which was then made safe by specialist teams.

It is believed that the vehicle was a silver Mercedes which contained gas canisters.

The Haymarket is in the heart of London's theatreland and close to the popular shopping area of Regent Street.

Eyewitnesses say a man in the car was driving erratically and then crashed into bins near a nightclub called Tiger Tiger.

He fled the scene and then bouncers nearby raised the alarm.

An investigation has been launched by the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command.

Sources say the perpetrators were not Irish, suggesting Islamic extremists were behind the potential attack, outside an American Express foreign exchange.

Sky's Tim Marshall said: "No doubt this was an attempted terror attack."

He said the target was probably civilians because there are no major political institutions in the area.

Authorities are warning of major traffic disruption in the area, with several roads shut along with Piccadilly Tube station.

They've found 3 suspicious cars altogether.  Damn, it's going to be a hell of an afternoon.  Be Safe MDSers

Anyone who says onions make you cry has clearly never been hit in the face with a turnip.

Dude in the Mercedes wasted the toll to drive into the city for nothing.    Thankfully.

The part of the article that takes the blame off of the Irish made me smile.  My grandmother was old school English and would get absolutely offended by even bringing up the Irish.  It's crazy that stuff like that still runs deep over there.

I'm going to get one of those shirts that say.  If you see me running, try to keep up!

The U.S. isn't even remotely worried about attacks here.  It's about 5pm there.  Traffic is a bitch at that time. "Be Vigilant" is all they'll tell us.  Ok, I'll be vigilant.  *sets up gunrack set in pickem up truck*

I did breathe a sigh of relief (after the people, yep!) after I saw that the Mercedes wasn't harmed in that shot :P

Gettin' a bit scary out there..glad I'm going primeval this weekend.  I'm off to camp, and if I even find a telephone on, I'm throwing it in the lake. Practice some Militia training  :|
