WOODBRIDGE, Calif. (KTXL) ? An elementary school student died Wednesday after the San Joaquin County Sheriff?s Office says he appears to have shot himself while on a distance learning Zoom call.

The sheriff?s office has identified the 11-year-old boy as Adan Llanos, a student from Woodbridge Elementary School.

According to the sheriff?s office, the student?s older sister was home at the time and was also on a distance learning call.

His audio and video were not believed to be on at the time of the shooting. Investigators said his sister heard the noise, found him and told her class what had happened.

Deputies responded to a home along Sterling Street in Woodbridge around 11 a.m. to investigate reports that a person had been shot, according to the sheriff?s office.

Investigators say the boy was found with an injury to his head.

Llanos was rushed to a local hospital but the sheriff?s office later reported he had died.

Lodi Unified School District Superintendent Cathy Nichols-Washer released a statement soon after his death was reported.

We are deeply saddened to share that a student from Woodbridge Elementary School passed away today as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Counseling and bereavement support services are available to students and staff during this difficult time.

Our thoughts are with the family affected by this terrible tragedy. We also offer our condolences to the Woodbridge Elementary community.

If you have concerns about your child?s reaction to this loss, please contact your child?s school site for support services.

Says the 11 year old boy was self inflicted gunshot. But I have a hard time believing that somebody below the age puberty (12-13) really had killed themselves unless proven otherwise that we do not have research to for now. RIP Adan Llanos.

I remember reading and doing a thread one time when a 1-2 year old baby shot themselves and thought there is no way a child would know suicide unless they were really abused severely by their parents.

There was a 6 year old child who walked in front of a oncoming train. https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs...165-story.html

The story is so heartbroken. Some kids do commit suicide and it makes me feel very depressed that they even know what it is.

Apparently Adan Llanos Death is being classified as an "Accident"

A spokesperson for the family of Adan Llanos on Thursday said in a social media post the 11-year-old Woodbridge Elementary School student’s death was an accident and not suicide.

The spokesperson, Llanos’ aunt, said the family was not ready to provide comment to the media about the boy’s death.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office identified Llanos as the victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday afternoon.

Neil Young, principal at Woodbridge Elementary, said everyone at the school — students, teachers and staff — knew Llanos and cared deeply for him.

“He was very loving,” Young said Thursday. “He always cared about others and always paid attention to when someone around him was feeling down. He was always looking to put a smile on people’s faces.”

The Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday said it had received several reports of a person shot in the 300 block of Sterling Street just after 11 a.m.

Upon arrival, deputies found a boy inside the home suffering from a head injury. Later in the day, the Sheriff’s Office said Llanos was in a Zoom class at the time of the shooting, but his audio and video had been turned off.

His sister, a Millswood Middle School student, was also in a Zoom class and heard a gunshot in the house. She went to another room, returned and asked her teacher to call 911. The teacher immediately closed the class and made the phone call.

Llanos’ death is still an open investigation, and details have not been made public.

“It’s been hard on all of us,” Young said. “The staff has been dealing with our own grieving, the district had its mental health team conduct a live Zoom call with the class so the students could share their memories of him. And they did that not only for his class, but for another class where all the students knew him as well.”

On Thursday afternoon, six teachers and principals from around the district brought balloons with written messages such as “Hope,” “Love,” and “Stronger Together” on them to Woodbridge and Millswood to show support for the students and staff at both campuses.

“All these balloons were blown up and written on by Larson staff members,” Turner Academy principal Robin Suttle said. “We do anticipate that more sites are going to participate. What we’re going to do today is just hang them on the fence as kind of an encouragement and support of all the staff and families, and everyone affected.”

A giant heart made of plastic red cups was also brought to Woodbridge, and was attached to a perimeter fence.

“We wanted to support and do something to show we are here for them and we’re a community, and it could have been anyone of us,” Washington Elementary School teacher Melissa Schamber said. “We want to do our part for our fellow teachers.”

Paul Warren, the Lodi Unified School District’s administrative director of student support services, said counselors and the district’s mental health team were deployed to students, their families, as well as the LUSD community, almost immediately after the incident.

“They provided class presentations so students could understand the circumstances, and so they could make themselves available to those who might be impacted the most by this,” he said. “Because of the nature of this tragedy, we want to make sure we cast a broad net of available services throughout the district and make sure we serve everyone.”

The district on Thursday posted a list of phone numbers and websites for mental health and wellness services for those in the community who need support with grieving or depression.

In addition, the district provides a number of resources, apps and links to support services at http://www.lodiusd.net/parents/menta...h-and-wellness that parents can access to help their student cope with loss, or their own well-being.

“I’ve talked to a lot of the mental health team members who are working with everyone at both schools, and it’s just a difficult time for a lot of people,” Warren said. “At the same time, there’s a high level of optimism, and people are feeling good after expressing how they’re feeling. But it still doesn’t deny the fact that this was a very terrible incident.”

A cousin of Llanos’ parents created a GoFundMe seeking $10,000 for funeral expenses at tinyurl.com/AdanLlanos. By later Thursday, the community had donated $14,475.

A fundraiser is also planned for Dec. 6 at Salas Park from 1-5 p.m. Food plates of a hot dog, soda and chips will be available for $5, and attendees are asked to wear masks and social distance at all times.

This death is just so weird. Why would he be playing with a gun in the middle of class? And why did he turn off his audio and video?

I feel like an 11 year old should know not to play with guns.

11 year old boy killed himself while in his distance learning class

    https://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2020...-online-class/

An elementary school student killed himself while in his distance learning class late Wednesday morning, the San Joaquin County Sheriff?s Office confirmed.

Deputies confirm the 11-year-old boy was in his Zoom class with his microphone and camera off when he took his own life. His sister, who was distance learning in another room, found him and alerted a neighbor and her teacher, who helped call authorities.

The sheriff?s office said deputies responded to the 300 block of Sterling Street in the community of Woodbridge just after 11 a.m. to investigate a reported shooting. At the scene, a young boy with a head injury was found. The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital with his parents by his side. He later died from his injuries.

Detectives have since responded to the scene and are now investigating.

Paul Warren is the special education director for the Lodi Unified School District. He oversees mental health services within the district.

?Sometimes we go through things that are temporary emotional experiences and with the support of family and other trained people we can get through those things. It?s tragic. Everybody?s has been impacted by this,? Warren said.

Warren said the district has a team of mental health therapists to work with students and staff.

Renee Bond, a licensed clinical counselor, works directly with children.

?I think it?s really time as a society that we start investing in wellbeing and mental health,? Bond said.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline offers suggestions to help: ask for help, make a safety plan, and look for warning signs. Bond says there could be several warning signs someone is in trouble.
