Giant whale sculpture catches crashing metro train in midair

    https://nypost.com/2020/11/02/whale-...in-in-mid-air/

A metro train was beached upon a whale in the Netherlands late Sunday.

The conductor smashed through a barrier that would have led 32 feet down to water below, had it not been for a fortuitously placed sculpture of a whale's tail at the De Akkers metro station, in the suburb of Spijkenisse, near the city of Rotterdam.

Authorities haven't been able to make heads or tails of how to remove the train from its dorsal perch.

'We are trying to decide how we can bring the train down in a careful and controlled manner,' a local official told the Dutch outlet NOS Monday.

There were no passengers aboard the train except for the driver, who was reportedly able to escape from the dead-end track on his own. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and reportedly was doing well.

The sculpture ' titled 'Saved by the Whale's Tail,' according to Reuters, a reference to what rail engineers call a 'tail track' ' was erected in 2002 by architectural artist Maarten Struijs. He was evidently eager to survey the fluke.

'I'll make sure that I get a few photos,' he told NOS. 'Because now it is at its best.'

Struijs was surprised to find out the structures held up.

'It has been there for almost 20 years,' he noted. 'You actually expect the plastic to pulverize a bit, but that is apparently not the case.'

Oh boy! What an appropriate title for the whale sculpture.
I'm curious to see how the train will be dismantled.

Cranes lift Dutch runaway train off whale sculpture

    https://www.koin.com/news/weird/dutc...o-be-salvaged/

SPIJKENISSE, Netherlands (AP) — The front carriage of a Dutch metro train that landed on a sculpture of a whale’s tail after plowing through the end of an elevated section of rails was painstakingly lifted clear of the artwork Tuesday and lowered to the ground.

The train was left precariously balanced on the whale’s tail 10 meters (33 feet) above the ground Monday, after plunging off the end of a metro line in Spijkenisse, a town on the southern edge of Rotterdam.

Two large yellow cranes worked in tandem Tuesday, placing chains around the front and rear of the train’s foremost carriage to support it. In an operation that started at dawn and lasted into the darkness of evening, workers also cut it loose from another carriage and removed its wheels before the train was lowered slowly to the ground.

About 30 people watching the operation cheered as the front carriage finally was separated from the rest of the train amid gathering darkness and cheered again when it was deposited on the ground.

The train was empty at the time it crashed onto the sculpture and the driver escaped unhurt, thanks to the whale tail’s unlikely catch.

The local security authority said the driver was interviewed by police Monday as part of the investigation into the cause of the crash and allowed to go home.

That title made me feel like I had a stroke, and then I saw the picture.

    What some awesome luck!
