After years of uncertainty, the day we’ve been waiting for has finally come. A day that will live in infamy.
That’s right — “Baby Shark” is officially the most-viewed video on YouTube.
According to Hypebeast, PINKFONG’s earworm hit, “Baby Shark,” has officially surpassed “Despacito,” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber, as the most-viewed video on YouTube of all time. It just hit over seven billion views at the end of October.
At the time of writing this article, the video has 7,042,720,458 views, while Fonsi’s successful hit has 7,038,330,283. It should be noted that “Despacito” was also considered the song of the summer in 2017, according to TIME.
Now that the mantle has been passed, it’s clear that we all now know what parents of young children have been doing since the first lockdowns in March.
“Baby Shark” began as a children’s song by Smart Study, a company for younger audiences in South Korea, in November 2015, according to Hypebeast, though its origins (including when it was first written) are unclear. After success in its native country, the song was translated to English in 2016 and blew up as a hit worldwide. Even though the song is less than 90 seconds, it spawned an extensive portfolio of branded merchandise, books, and even a live tour, The Guardian reported.
