A Missouri man was allegedly huffing inhalants when he lost control of his SUV and fatally mowed down an urgent care worker in front of the clinic, authorities said.
Trenton Geiger, 20, was charged with manslaughter and tampering with physical evidence Monday in connection to the deadly crash at the Total Access Urgent Care in Ballwin, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
Police said Geiger on Sunday night drove through oncoming lanes of traffic, struck a light pole and tree before plowing down 25-year-old Marissa Politte and crashing into the urgent care center.
Politte, who was an X-ray technician, had been on the sidewalk in front of the clinic after completing her shift when she was hit, the outlet reported. She was brought to Mercy Hospital St. Louis, where she died from her injuries about two hours later.
Geiger, who was not injured, had been initially discovered unconscious behind the wheel but then grabbed his 'whip it' cartridges and fled into the woods to toss them, police said.
The cartridges are used to get high off of inhalants such as aerosol cans, cleaning fluids and paint thinners.
Inside the vehicle, officers discovered aerosol cans, which they believe he had been huffing before the crash, the outlet said.
He was booked into jail and his bond was set at $100,000, news station KSDK reported.
Politte was remembered Monday by colleagues as a 'very beloved team member who worked so hard during the pandemic.'
'She was the kindest person. She just loved patients,' Ashley Williams, senior director of patient experience, told the paper.
