An employee of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority was fatally stabbed Friday night at a downtown rail station, officials said.

The attack occurred Friday at 10:46 p.m. at the 7th Street/Metro Center subway station in the financial district, according to Metro spokesman Rick Jager.

The victim was transported to the L.A. County-USC Medical Center with critical injuries to his chest and was pronounced dead at 11:23 p.m., Jager said.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office later identified the victim as a Metro employee, Jager said. The victim's name has not been released because his family has not yet been notified, he said.

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the stabbing as a homicide, a spokesman said.

Metro Chief Executive Phil Washington said in an email to employees that the victim had worked at Metro for more than 18 years, most recently in the rail operations division.

It was not clear whether the employee was on duty at the time of the attack, Jager said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim?s family and fellow Metro employees," Jager said. He said the agency was "deeply saddened" by the incident.

Update a person of interest is wanted by the LAPD over the murder at the rail station.

LAPD on Sunday released images of a woman wanted in the deadly stabbing of a transit employee at the 7th Street/Metro Center station in downtown Los Angeles two days before.

The incident happened on the Red Line train around 10:45 p.m. on Friday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The woman, described as a woman 25 to 30 years old, fatally stabbed the victim after an argument between them broke out and escalated, police said.

Authorities provided no further details about the weapon used nor the nature of the dispute.

The attacker was last seen exiting the train at the 7th Street/Metro Center station pushing a green bike, police said.

The victim suffered critical injuries to his chest and was taken to the Los Angeles County USC Medical Center, according to the L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, who identified him as a male employee. He was pronounced dead at 11:23 p.m., Metro said.

The agency did not confirm whether or not he was working at the time. Spokesman Rick Jager said the department has not been able to notify his next of kin and could not yet release further information about his identity.

“Metro is deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident involving a Metro family member and our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and fellow Metro employees,” the Transportation Authority said in a statement.

The department added that while “overall the Metro system is safe, we have a zero-tolerance policy for criminal activity that impacts the safety and security of our transit patrons and employees. We will work closely with our law enforcement partners to identify and aggressively pursue perpetrators and bring them to justice.”

Police on Sunday described the attacker as armed and dangerous. They asked anybody with information to call homicide Detective Lenchuk or Salas at 213-486-8700.

Metro also asked any riders who may have seen the incident to come forward. They can make an anonymous report by using Metro’s Transit Watch app or by calling 888-950-SAFE (7233).

Update thread is heading to Non-MDS Board

A woman with a pending assault case was charged Wednesday with murdering a Metro employee, who was stabbed on a Metro B Line train at a downtown Los Angeles rail station.

Irma Beatriz Monroy is set to be arraigned in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom in connection with last Friday's killing of Louis Rabinowitz, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

The 25-year-old Los Angeles woman could face up to 16 years to life in state prison if convicted of the murder charge, which includes an allegation that she personally used a knife as a deadly weapon, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Monroy allegedly got into an argument with the 54-year-old victim inside the train near the 7th Street/Metro Center Station and stabbed him once in the chest. He died soon afterward.

Authorities said the assailant was seen exiting the station pushing a "distinctive'' green bicycle. She was arrested three days later by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Division and jailed in lieu of $2 million bail.

Officers recovered the knife suspected of having been used in the stabbing, along with the bicycle, police said.

In an email sent Saturday night to employees, Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington said the victim had worked at Metro for more than 18 years, most recently in the rail operations division.

In a statement released Monday night, he said the transit agency was "grateful for the quick response and action taken by our law enforcement partners in the apprehension and arrest of the suspect in the murder of one of our employees last Friday night at the 7th Street Metro Center Station. It is through this quick response that riders and fellow Metro employees can be assured that safety on our system is top priority and individuals who commit such acts of violence will be aggressively pursued and brought to justice.''

Monroy had been charged Sept. 25 with one count of assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly assaulting her brother with a weight on Aug. 31, along with an allegation that she inflicted great bodily injury, according to the DA's office.
The Victim has been identified as Louis Rabinowitz, (54)

    Here is another

A 25-year-old is facing life in prison in relation to a fatal stabbing on the subway in Los Angeles if she is convicted.

Irma Monroy was charged with one count of murder with an allegation of using a knife as a deadly weapon after she was accused of stabbing Louis Rabinowitz, 54, while riding on a Metro train, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Friday when Monroy got into an argument with Rabinowitz in a train near the 7th Street/Metro Center Station, prosecutors said.

Monroy allegedly armed herself during the verbal dispute and stabbed Rabinowitz in the chest, according to officials.

Rabinowitz was rushed to the Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, NBC Los Angeles reported. According to the outlet, the victim was a Metro employee.

A representative for Metro did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment, though a spokesperson told KABC in a statement, "Metro is deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident involving a Metro family member and our thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family and fellow Metro employees."

Monroy was booked for murder on Monday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Authorities said a knife was recovered during her arrest, as well as a green bicycle that she was seen with while exiting the station following the incident.

If convicted, Monroy faces a possible maximum sentence of 16 years to life in state prison.

Monroy is currently held on a $2,060,000 bail, which includes an unrelated outstanding felony warrant for assault with a deadly weapon.

According to prosecutors, Monroy has a separate pending case for allegedly attacking her brother with a weight on August 31.

Online jail records show that Monroy was arrested on Sept. 21 on a felony charge by Hollywood police.

She was also arrested in May on a felony charge by LAPD's Transit Service Division, according to jail records.

It is not immediately clear if Monroy has obtained legal representation who can speak on her behalf, or if she has entered a plea at this time.
