BELFAST ? For 36 years, family members of a Stockton Springs woman beaten to death watched as the man they suspected of doing the crime enjoyed his life.
They suspected now 57-year-old Kirt Damon Sr. killed Dorothea Burke after a family wedding on June 23, 1984, but didn?t have the evidence to prove it.

?He was causing a problem at my sister?s wedding. He was in a fighting mood,? Roxanne Smith, the niece of Burke, said on the anniversary of her death last year.

Damon was indicted by the Waldo County Grand Jury and was arrested Tuesday night at his home. He made his first court appearance Wednesday at the Waldo Judicial Center.

He entered a not guilty plea in the murder charge against him and Justice Robert Murray ordered he be held until his bail hearing, scheduled for Sept. 28.

Smith said Wednesday she was still in shock by Damon?s arrest.

After the 1984 wedding, which also happened to be 63-year-old Burke?s birthday, she apparently went to Priscilla?s, a bar in Bucksport that is now known as Glenn?s Place. Her body was found on Meadow Road in Stockton Springs on June 28. Investigators at the time said she died of blunt force trauma to the head.

?People say, ?How can you remember that?? And I say, ?How can you forget that?? Can?t forget it. We can?t move on,? Smith said.

A year ago, Smith and her sister said they only wanted one thing.

?Justice, closure for the family, her family, for the town that loved her,? said Pat Eaton, niece of Dorothea Burke. ?Stockton, Sandy Point, everybody knew her. Everybody loved her.?

Maine State Police detectives still want to talk to anyone who has information about the case and ask people to call their unsolved homicide unit in Augusta at 624-7143.
