Update the thread is now heading to Non MDS because Kay Kay Brent (9) has been identified as the shooting victim in this report.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) — One of the shootings that occurred Saturday took the life of a 9-year-old girl and injured several others.

And it happened in broad daylight at Mama Marks Park.

According to police, a car drove by and opened fire hitting four people in the park.

“Kay Kay Brent is unfortunately, she’s deceased,” said Sacramento City Councilman Allen Warren. “And I grew up with that family. I’ve known that family basically all my life.”

Warren says 9-year-old Kay Kay Brent’s family is besides themselves with grief.

“How do you deal with the sudden loss of anything you love that you anticipate basically being there forever?” Warren told FOX40.

The shooting also injured Kay Kay Brent’s 6-year-old sister.

“Her sister I’m told is going to make it,” Warren said.

While police search for the shooter or shooters, Warren says he and his fellow council members are horrified by the string of shootings that happened over the weekend.

“You know, I think it’s cowardly to think you’re going to end disputes by shooting at people,” Warren said.

Warren believes the shootings in his district are outliers and don’t signal a growing trend, adding the city has done a lot to prevent violence.

“We’ve been doing things like funding city programs for youth and setting up hotlines to help deal with the mental struggles that people are having from COVID,” Warren said.

But he says more still needs to be done.

“We got to do a better job in helping these young people to understand this is not the way. It is unsustainable,” Warren said.

Sacramento police still have not released a motive and are not saying if this shooting was gang related or not.

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
A 9-year-old girl was killed in a shooting near a Sacramento park Saturday, according to police.

The shooting happened near Mama Marks Park around 1:08 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department said.

When officers arrived, they found a woman, a 9-year-old and a 6-year-old who had been shot.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital and is in critical condition. The 6-year-old was also taken to the hospital and is in stable condition, police said.

"This senseless act of violence has affected all of us in Twin Rivers Unified, and I know you join me in extending our deepest sympathy to the families. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers," Superintendent Dr. Steve Martinez said in a statement.

A Hearing is out for Laise Burton Hands over the death of Makaylah Brent.

A 21-year-old man on Thursday afternoon made his first court appearance since he was charged with an Oct. 3 shooting at a North Sacramento park that killed 9-year-old Makaylah Brent and wounded three people, including a 6-year-old child.

The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office formally charged Laise Burton Hands with murder in Makaylah’s death in the drive-by shooting at Mama Marks Park in the Del Paso Heights neighborhood.

Hands also faces three counts of attempted murder for the shooting that injured the 6-year-old girl and two adults, Ashleigh Brent and Tyriece Washington, according to the criminal complaint filed Thursday.

Family said Makaylah and two relatives hit by gunfire were not the intended target in the shooting. Since the Saturday shooting, several vigils have taken place with Makaylah’s family and others in the community calling for the gunman to turn himself in.

Each of Hands’ charges includes an enhancement for allegedly using a gun during the commission of the crimes, which indicates prosecutors believe Hands fired a gun that struck the victims.

Hands was wearing an orange jail inmate uniform when he entered the courtroom; his wrists in handcuffs and a mask covering the lower portion of his face to comply with the courthouse’s COVID-19 rules. Thursday’s court hearing was held remotely via Zoom teleconferencing and streamed live on the court’s YouTube channel.

Appearing before Sacramento Superior Court Commissioner Ken Brody, Hands did not enter a plea to the charges.

Brody scheduled Hands to return to court Dec. 15 for proceedings in the case. Hands did not speak much during the brief hearing, only to say he agreed to conducting the hearing via Zoom and telling Brody “Have a nice day,” as he left the courtroom.

Hands also has a previous serious or violent felony conviction, which considered a strike under that state’s “three strikes” law. He was convicted of felony assault with a semi-automatic gun in September 2017 in Juvenile Court, according to the criminal complaint.

Hands has been in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail since Oct. 5, and he was re-arrested on the murder and attempted murder charges Tuesday, according to jail records.

The jail records also shows that Hands was initially arrested after a warrant was served in which he resisted arrest from a case in February. He also faces three felony charges including evading an officer, having a concealed firearm inside a vehicle. He’s also suspected of an illegal transfer of a firearm, hit and run and driving without a license.
