The Houma Police Department announced Thursday that remains were found in connection with an investigation into a 22-year-old cold case.

Chief Dana Coleman announced Monday that officers arrested 47-year-old Stanley Briggs for second-degree murder in the disappearance of Shannon Harris.

A search started Monday in an area off of Hollywood Road in Houma. Police say remains were found on the property Thursday, but a process is underway to determine if the remains are of Harris.

Officers responded on Sept. 19, 2020, to a medical emergency on Stovall Street and aided Briggs for an apparent drug reaction, according to Coleman.

During conversation with officers, Briggs disclosed information related to the disappearance of Harris, Houma police said.

A warrant was obtained for second-degree murder and Briggs was booked Monday at the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex.

Police say that they believe Harris and Briggs were friends at one point in time before the disappearance.

Police say Briggs was always a person of interest in Harris' disappearance but was never questioned 22 years ago.

Harris' family was in attendance at the announcement.

A family spokesperson thanked the Houma Police Department. The family spokesperson said it has been a long 22 years, and are grateful for the people and volunteers in helping recover Harris.

"Shannon was a kind person," the spokesperson said. "His family loved him. There have been two losses, our loss and the Briggs' family. We ask everyone to pray for both families because there is no winner in this."

30-year-old art student, Shannon Harris was reported missing by his family in October of 1998 after he did not return to the school he was attending in Dallas following a visit.

Houma detectives continued to follow up on leads in 2002 and explored a field near Hollywood Road and 9th Street with no results, said Houma Police Chief Dana Coleman.

Houma officers made contact with Briggs following a medical emergency call. Briggs gave information regarding the disappearance of Shannon Harris. Following the investigation, the death was considered a homicide the location of his body was disclosed.

?I wish to thank everyone who assisted us in this effort,? Chief Coleman said. ?Although this is a very sad outcome, we find solace in the knowledge that these combined efforts might bring some closure.?
