WEIRTON, WV ' A normally quiet community was devastated by a double homicide of a mother and daughter in Weirton, West Virginia.

According to our partners at WTOV9, the crime took place Thursday afternoon.

'The Weirton Police Department and the West Virginia State Police crime lab are investigating a homicide. The suspect is in custody at this time,' said Lt. Scott Cook of the Weirton Police Department.

Channel 11′s Amy Hudak spoke with community members as they held a vigil for the two victims. They identified them as Melissa Rowland and her daughter, Madison Crowe.

Police have not released the names of the victims or the person they have in custody.

During the vigil, a grieving sister stood in front of her community speaking about the tragic murders of her mother and sister.

Crowe, 16, was a sophomore and soccer player at Weirton High School. The soccer coach canceled all games Thursday to make sure the community stood together.

It's unclear what led to the deadly shooting, and authorities have not released any information about the person taken into custody.
