ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. ' A 3-year-old boy was shot in the head and killed Tuesday night in an apparent drive-by shooting in Orange County, according to his family.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office said the fatal shooting was reported at 9:21 p.m. in the 4400 block of Drexel Avenue near North Lane.
Veronica Felix, the boy's grandmother, identified the child as Daquane James Felix Jr., who turned 3 years old 10 days ago.
Felix said Daquane was playing in the living room when she heard what sounded like firecrackers and discovered that Daquane had been shot in the head.
Sheriff's investigators said the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman was heard at the scene yelling, 'They killed my baby.'
There are several bullet holes in the front door, windows and wall of the home. Daquane's family thinks it was a drive-by shooting because they saw a car speeding away after they heard gunshots.
'An evil person (shot him). A nasty person. Somebody with no heart," Felix said. 'It's scary. I can't sleep in this house no more. It's just scary.'
Felix said she doesn't know why her home would have been targeted, adding that her family is devastated over Daquane's death.
'It hurts bad. It hurts so bad," Felix said. 'I'm going to miss him.'
Investigators said there nine people in the home, but only the child was injured.
'How can you do this to a child' An innocent child don't have nothing to do to this," Felix said. " How can you come to someone's house and do this' How' f they've got any conscience, they should turn themselves in because my grandbaby ain't coming back no more and he was only 3. He did not deserve this."
The shooting comes less than 24 hours after a 14-year-old was killed and a 15-year-old was critically wounded in a shooting less than 3 miles away.
Investigators say both shootings were gang-related.
